They rejected Gumball because it seemed to childish and sad, so Cartoon Network picked it up instead (it was originally going to be about a bunch of rejected characters at school, which is why every character on the show is unique and diverse), as for regular show, when the creators were trying to pick it up on Adult Swim, Cartoon Network looked at it and thought it would be better if it was shown for teens and a bit of an older audience on Cartoon Network, rather than on Adult Swim
