Geez, I wish we had more rivers like this one here in Utah. Closest would be the Provo river and it’s not even half as big and covered with heavy fishing pressure. Maybe the green, but it’s so far away from everything.

Remember reading about a fellow, in Montana, who was going bass fishing down south somewhere and his vehicle broke down. He was in a fair sized town alongside a large river and a fair distance from home. Parts for the repair were ordered, but it would take two or three days for them to arrive and be installed. He decided to pass the time tossing bass plugs in the river. He was amazed at the size and abundance of brown trout that he caught on his bass gear. He said he never went bass fishing and spent his entire time on that river.

Nice trout...could't tell from the video exactly where you were...I live in Springfield and there are bull trout on both the McKenzie and Middle Fork Upper Willamette. I've caught several when fishing for steelhead on those rivers. Nice job releasing and getting it back in the water. They are definitely on the endangered list. Only place I know for sure they can be kept in Oregon is Lake Billy Chinook..............

What do think produces a more productive and well rounded fishery for lake here in WA? Planting what they call “ catchables “ or fry/ fingerlings ? Just curious about your perspective because have a science/ fish management background. And would love to see more videos that go over what works and what doesn’t in our lake ecosystems, definitely something you have a depth of knowledge on that other KZbinrs don’t .

Love catching big Bulls. Used to hit the Metolious and strip bunny leaches for absolute monsters. Plenty of double-digit fish and scads of 5+lbs. Was hard to call it "fly fishing" when you were essentially chunking an ounce+ of soggy rabbit, but it was effective and FUN!

That’s my home water! When you go further up the McKenzie, there are ODFW signs that say “you’re in Bull Trout country” were you at Harvest (my car) Landing near town when you got that bull, or further upstream?

That big bull was certainly filling its belly on those hatchery rainbows. I’ve been reading up on Skagit river fishery history and I listened to a lecture on closing the hatchery production of steelhead. The lecturer mentioned how the bull trout would always move up on the steelhead smolts after they were released.

I caught a monster eastern brook trout in a similar spot you caught that bull. Frog pattern quick fish worked for me.

Hi Tyler, ? about treble hooks. I’m reluctant to use them when catch and release fishing thinking chance of injury to fish by the hooks not in the mouth.. Thoughts?

There is always a chance they can cause damage, especially on smaller fish but you do tend to have higher success landing fish.

That is one species that's still on my list to catch, lived in Washington for 12 years never caught one of those and only caught one sea run cutty on my center pin one of those would be real fun on a pin

Great stuff! I like fishing bulls in the late summer up high in the systems. My experience with bulls has pretty much always been that they fight hard and stay deep, much like how this one did. To your comment about not knowing of them being in the Willamette, I want to say that I heard of a program to reintroduce them to the Clackamas at some point relatively recently. So maybe a similar program where you were, or even fish moving out of the Clackamas.

when i was younger i caught them in sandy ,salmon and clackamas river and thought they were brook trout. i wish they had better education on the differences back then.

Nice trout! I read somewhere that the correct way to reel in a fish is reel in as you dip the rod down towards the water and pull up on the rod to bring the fish in and repeat ie: let the rod do the hard work and don't use the reel to fight the fish. Any truth to this?

Yeah there's some truth to it depends on how many fish you want to lose the correct way is to do what this guy was doing constant tension or it'll throw your hook or get you cought up in something also what ever way the fish is moving put the pressure to the opposite way
