More than 10 years ago I caught my first kayak Kokanee. Since then Kokanee have become an obsession for me. In that time I went from scratching out 1 or 2 fish to consistently catching limits of Kokanee and pursuing some of the largest Kokanee in North America with great success. In this video I reflect upon the fundamental differences between myself as a kayak Kokanee angler then vs now and why they make me successful.

Great video. It got me to thinking back when my Dad would take me kokanee fishing back in the 70's and what we did to catch fish. Like you, I do things way different now.

I have learned a TON of stuff watching your videos. Thank you very much. I now have a Fish Hawk and I fish on Curlew Lake (I live there) . As of yet I have not caught one but I have only been out 3 times this summer. I got busy with other things, but I should have some free time soon. I travelled to Tacoma on Business last weekend and stopped by the Brewster Pool to check things out. I saw lots of boats on trailers, but I did not see any on the water. I was there about 10 AM give or take. I have been afraid to fish there as I have heard horror stories about launching the boat. But the water looked devoid of boats now. Whats up with that? Are the fish gone now?

It's a morning bite. Gets much tougher once the sun hits the water. Plus it's too hot out.

Love this content. Enjoyed much improved success in my sophomore Koke season thanks in large part to you. Been helpful re-watching your content along the way. I think I’ve noticed some adaptations you’ve made, possibly more spinners vs hoochies, and I love that. Would love to see you simply re-doing some of your Koke 101 type content such as (basic setups, bait, location, etc) where you also include some part how/why you have evolved. End with a simple question, is it logical to just find mid 50 deg water always, starting late spring? Do they ever really feed outside of that? Again, keep it up!!

Another GREAT VIDEO Thanks! Do you have a video on moon phases, best time to fish with each phase? I looked and didn’t see one.

What are your thoughts on the best spinners, or best flutterbugs, for kokanee?

Thanks for sharing your experience and knowledge. When you was at Brewster you was putting the sockeye in your catch bag. Did you have ice in the bag? 7:08 Is it a good idea to put them on ice asap? Thank you for your time👍👍

I think he does, he dispatches and bleeds the fish in his net off camera, due to youtube guidelines.

was thinking about, couldn't you turn up the Sensitivity on the fish finder to bring up the thermal cline compared to that little gadget you were using just wondering what your thoughts are.
@shawnclements14
@shawnclements14 Ай бұрын
That can certainly get you in the right area, but the fishhawk will show you exactly where the kokanee will be congregating

Yes cranking up the sensitivity works with a strong thermocline late season but not so well early season

Do I need to take multiple samples on the fish hawk if I move? Yesterday at Detroit thermocline was at 70ft so tried targeting with down rigger and snap weights and caught one on each but then nothing and some people targeting 40 to 50 were doing better. I could see a huge school at 70ft but seemed hard to line back up on them with my waypoint. Had a bit of success trying jigging but they moved on and hookups didn't land much.

Sometimes the fish feeding are at different depths than fish holding in ideal temperatures. Chase the biters.
@Zhou-Bo-Tong
@Zhou-Bo-Tong 13 күн бұрын
@@spiltmilt so start with down rigger for the holdout spot and dropper the top of marks and adjust both up and down for bites. How long until you adjust for a different depth? A couple passes over marks? Seems like droppers have the advantage of covering more vertical territory to probe.

Yeah if I go through fish a few times with no bites I move on. Its not uncommon for shallower fish to be the feeding fish. I also agree that droppers tend to hunt better for these fish.

Would you say sockeye behave the same as Kokanee as far as hanging out in the sweet spot of 55* or is it totally different?
