I think this silent is absolutely cool, but when I finally build my dream bike I'm going to get one of those i9 hubs, like the Hydra that just sounds like a freaking banshee. I think that sounds absolutely awesome, it's near-instantaneous engagement and like a previous comments or said you won't have to carry bells or anyting for riding near bears or moose or elk or hikers.

I think it might be from driving cars, but just hearing nothing but tyres and the ground doesn't suit me. I love hearing a high engagement hub whizzing away in the mix.

I don't know when loud ass hubs became synonymous with quality (eeeer, yes I do, I blame you, Chris King!), or people wanting to pretend they're on motos, but I'm all for silent freehubs. I'm sad Shimano abandoned their Scylence, but excited to see others catch on. Tire noise and nature is all I want to hear on a ride.

I read in a review that the new Shimano Micro Spline hubs are pretty quiet - not sure just how quiet, though.
@Jaymachine5 жыл бұрын
The shimano sylence hubs are available in the new 12 speed microspline. i just bought one going to lace it up tomorrow. $115 xt rear hub, $55 front. The front hub is trash bearings so rough needed to polish cup and cones to smoothen it, but the rear is pretty smooth and silent.
@cup_and_cone5 жыл бұрын
@@Jaymachine The 8100 hubs aren't actually Sylence (you won't see official marketing for Sylence on them), but they're still pretty quiet (as are the new XTR hubs). They probably weren't as quiet as Shimano hoped so they stopped marketing it. My last front Shimano road hub was like that too...very notchy. I usually just run new Shimano hubs as-is from the box for a couple hundred miles, factory grease and preload...this let's the races lap themselves in. Then I'll do full rebuild to get the contaminated grease out, re-grease, and do final adjustment.
@Jaymachine5 жыл бұрын
Cup & Cone Thanks,I was curious about that. Its definitely a spin off of the sylence hubs design then, its not the normal paw engagement. you feel the complete disengagement and there are no clicks. But at low speed it comes back into engagement and you hear the clicks. I’ll crack them open after i get some miles on them and see whats going on for sure.
@enol86035 жыл бұрын
I've always enjoyed quiet hubs. Been on Shimano XTR, Saint hubs and DT Swiss 240s and even used the Shimano silent clutch hubs but those felt too spongy and didn't last long. Saved up for these hubs and they've been pretty bombproof. 3 years later and still no issues. When I'm out in nature I prefer to listen to the sounds of nature rather than add noise pollution with noisy hubs.

The silence is the icing. The first layer of the cake is the drag-free performance. They are noticeably faster on downhill sections. The rest of the cake is the instant engagement. Unbelievably nice on technical climbs while ratcheting those pedals. I rode these for three years. Bought a new Evil Offering in June and HATE the noisy hubs. My Onyx/We Are One Unions arrive today! I've never met anyone who went back to draggy chainsaw hubs after riding Onyx.
