Anne Deveson's 1991: Spinning Out will help people to understand the human face of a uniquely human disease - schizophrenia. There is no known cause or cure. Schizophrenia has been a puzzle for centuries. One in a hundred people will develop the illness. 25% of these will have a single attack, then recover, but most sufferers experience recurrent tormenting attacks. Anne Deveson, whose own son was schizophrenic, speaks directly to experts on the subject - schizophrenics themselves and their families. We meet Simon, a consumer advocate and artist; Jay, a mathematical physicist and his daughter, Susan, who is also schizophrenic; street kid, Ace; and Bill and Paul who have spent most of their lives in institutions. It is a touching and important film which argues strongly for activism amongst patients, carers and the psychiatric profession.

My cousin was schizophrenic. I knew way back when we were children. He was exquisitely handsome and just brilliant, but he had very early OCD, and I believe he was I’ll from very early on. This was 60 years ago, and it didn’t manifest until he was on an exchange program in Russia! Can you imagine? Melting down in a foreign country, even though he spoke the language, would heighten the terror. His family couldn’t handle him so they sent him to California, where he discovered Hollywood and all of its lures into fantasy. He absolutely refused to take medication. He self medicated with street drugs and enabling family members. He became alternately violent then, incredibly sweet. He was hospitalized until it became illegal to hold him against his will. He had numerous therapists and a lawyer on retainer, to get him out of jail or hospital. Everyone gave up on him and he eventually committed suicide at age 49.

My daughter's ex has untreated paranoid schizophrenia, and has been a nightmare and disaster waiting to happen for a long time. He just murdered my son one month ago. I'm absolutely livid with the complete lack of treatment for the severely mentally ill in the USA. There is NOWHERE to turn, no matter how serious and dangerous the situation is, until its too late.

Sorry for your loss. Access to mental health is or should be a constitutional right. To know that the government deliberately shut down mental heath hospitals permanently under the Regan administration and literally said to them all "now fend for yourselves". Majority of homeless in America came from these shut down mental hospitals. Its criminal and insidious.

i’m so sorry that happened to your family… unfortunately i am not surprised by anything these days with the state of the system. it’s made impossible for the few competent professionals involved anymore still these days too since deinstitutionalization. total destruction of the large capacity, functional mental hospital system we had in US totally gutted and destroyed, happened over a lot of our lifetimes and yet few people know something so significant has been removed until as you said it’s too late…

If you are mentally ill, please comply with drinking very little to no alcohol and take your medication every single day, and please, create a routine that you can fall back on for your own sanity, so that you can stay grounded when you are not well. Also, please make sure to tell your primary doctor everything that is going on even if you think your symptoms are trivial. It's easier for the doctor to fix an issue early than it is to leave it go on and on for ages before you get help.

Very insightful documentary. Really shows some of what people and families go through with schizophrenia. Huge eye-opener and well documented. Thank you so much... It's really is tragic that people don't really understand more about mental health issues... We have come along way from how things were , most definitely , but sadly there's so much more to learn and really understand. We need to really listen more and learn how we can help and cope better overall. Empathy is a huge thing.... ❤

This certainly noticed that the families dealing with this mental disease is suffered by the whole family.. First symptom is the community blaming the family as being too tolerant or not paying attention or the family is "dysfunctional". These assumption hurt us to the core. Then trying to find support which is VERY difficult. Then not being able to find help with secured housing in preparation for our deaths. I can't speak to other countries, but the USA has ignored the care necessary for unfortunate folks that live with this AND/OR other mental challenges

I’m definitely afraid to stop. I tried to stop taking a particular psychiatric drug used for depression. My psychiatrist must have screwed up because he didn’t gradually taper me off the drug, even though I had been on the drug for decades. It would seem as though "normal" people simply want people to behave as they do on the television screen. Which makes for a life that is both boring and a lie, and one could also argue; that it is not in fact actually living. When people deviate from this then they say the person is Schizophrenic because of their "bad" behavior, while simultaneously harassing them and making fun of them. That is what I get from this. It does seem like a conspiracy to me, I'm sorry.

Your meds are there not to alter your brain but make it normal. Many people with psychotic mental illness can find recovery from medication and your illness mat just be reactive and not organic, that is given time and proper brain chemistry there's a possibility you will cure your illness. But without the medication your chemistry will take a very long time to balance out if it does at all. Those with the worstbmental illness are those who chose not to take their meds and not taking your meds is a sign you are still experiences your illness otherwise you would went to get better and you would take your meds to get better. It's not a life sentence but it can be without proper measures to combat the disorder.
