Spinosaurus (name meaning "Spine Lizard") is a genus of spinosaurid dinosaur that originated during the Middle Cretaceous period in what is now Africa. The largest and namesake of the spinosaur family and one of the largest species of theropod dinosaurs, Spinosaurus was a heavily built and fearsome carnivore known for its long arms, elongated crocodile-like snout with two head crests on each side, and the large sail on its back.
Spinosaurus was the apex predator of its time and region for nearly 20 million years, preying on a variety of animals, including other dinosaurs, fish, and sharks. Due to its appearance and diet, scientists believe that the Spinosaurus lived a semi-aquatic lifestyle (not unlike modern crocodilians), hunting both on land and in bodies of water such as rivers, ponds, lakes, and coastal shores.
Similar to the function of the long spine on the back of Dimetrodon, the distinctive sail of the Spinosaurus was likely used to regulate its body temperature and possibly attract mates or intimidate rivals. Its only threats were other Spinosaurus and its rival, Carcharodontosaurus.
