This chapter really emphasizes how human Guts is. Most anime protags that are edgy don't have anybody that calls them on their shit. Rule of Cool overrides a lot. Berserk addresses the mentality of pushing people away and how trauma drives people insane. Godot basically slapped Guts and told him to get his shit together. That he was acting really stupid, and he still had people who needed him. Which was exactly what he needed before he slipped over the deep end. The best moments in the series come when the story addresses just how fucked up Guts is as a person.

Idk if you're at the Millennium Falcon Arc, so I want get into spoilers. But ill say, at the beginning of the arc, Guts needs to make a big decision on whether or not he goes along with his murder spree or stay with Casca and try to get her somewhere safe. I truly believe that without the Cracks in the Blade chapter, Guts might have picked the wrong decision. Cracks in the Blade is the foundation of what Guts would become. To me this was the most important part of Berserk. The beginning of true change in Guts. The real theme of Berserk is not just grim dark or gore its not even nihilistic. Godo acknowledges the Pain and Trauma Guts went through but calls him a coward because Guts refuses to confront that pain in the form of Casca. Ultimately Miura’s message is not one of righteousness or justice its about realizing whats truly important, Sharing the suffering with the ones you love, and that in a world so terribly cruel the hopeful ones are the ones who are truly strong.

Though he chose to act on his rage and hatred, it is still almost impossible to blame him for making such a choice. Guts is still human, afterall. He had almost lost, what seperates him from the beings responsible for his suffering. The synthesis between philosophies of individualism and psychology, in contrast to determinism as the base of the setting, is what makes Berserk so beautiful to me.

Just bringing up the name of the chapter already makes me want to cry. It's awesome how it's an old dying man that stands up to Guts edgyness and not only survives but gets under his skin and makes HIM question just what the hell he's doing with all that rage. ....Just eleven chapters after Beast of Darkness.... In regards to what would happen if Guts never stopped the Apostle Hunt,i don't think it would have gone on forever. Guts would sooner or later hit again the breaking point he reached in chapter 118("Beast of Darkness"), he would fall but wouldn't get up,his rage and determination simply wouldn't be enough for the job anymore and he would get unceremoniously killed by an apostle. It would be a matter of time until Guts' sorrow caught up with him. It's interesting to think the roll he would end up on during the Holy Demon War though. Would he fight on either sides? would he try to murder both of them? how long until they overwhelmed him? At the end of the night,Guts still was a human mortal man waiting for the sunset.

I think the comparison of Guts' actions to Ricket is a tad unfair, considering Ricket did not go through the horrors of eclipse (he also didn't see Zodd or Wlyad) nor did he witness all of his friends get slaughtered by monsters like it was some sort of a game. The dog apostole which Guts overwhelmed and killed - did not give him enough horror to show just how terrible eclipse was. It was a monster stronger than anything he's ever witnessed sure, but he also witnessed it's defeat. Guts had witnessed his and all of his friends defeat - and it all happened so fast that one couldn't even process everything properly. To Ricket just like Guts said in this chapter, Band of the Hawk simply died - he knows nothing more, and the only two options he has are to stay with the last two members of the band or find out what happened to BotH. Which again for him the only two people that could answer that question were Guts and Casca (if she regained her memory). That's why I'm sure we can all agree that while Ricket did the right thing by staying behind and looking after Casca there's also the fact that his lack of knowledge about the horrors witnessed by Guts and Casca left him with no other options. Whereas Guts' pain led him on a path of revenge, against forces that he was unable to win against previously. We've also had a very similar scenario when Guts fights Zodd for the first time - where he charges into the fort on his own due to this fellow party members getting slaughtered against the opponent that is far stronger than them. I'd think that in those situations it wasn't himself that he was thinking about but minimizing the risk to those around him - he always dived in head first into battle. And just like he did in Zodd fight, he launched himself into his revenge quest for his lost band members and Casca's pain - the only difference was that there was no one to pull him back from it the second time - he was hunting his and Casca's enemies because otherwise they'd be the ones being hunted. Never relizing that just like with Griffith during Zodd fight he didn't have to be alone and could rely on someone else. As well as he lacked understanding of something that Godo told him of, and that's getting over the pain with Casca. Even if Guts succeeded in his revenge, Casca's pain would still be present - and that's something he overlooked (and we are seeing the results of that pain in the new chapters). That being said, the conversation with Godo is incredibly introspective and I think it helped to enlarge those cracks that you've mentioned in his blackswordsman persona - leading to him growing as a character and realising what's he should be doing. Also you've hit the nail on the head with the mentions about Guts' body language and visible changes from his black swordsman persona. I think this chapter really showed his stress, worry and fear really well. Oh boy, have I written a bit.

Rickert eventually admits and acknowledges this though on the hill of swords, he breaks down and is incredibly apologetic and guilty when talking to Guts because after finding out what really happened he realizes that Guts has had to deal with the burden of the eclipse and its aftermath all alone while Rickert only vaguely understands the atrocities that occurred and was able to heal in a comparatively cozy and safe environment. I feel that the story definitely doesn't make the mistake of vilifying Guts for his previous choices; moreso just contextualizing them and showing him that while his actions are understandable they are not sustainable.

I want to comment that when Guts drove Jill away from her, is because he legitimately thought it would be in her best interests to not allow her to follow him. He is branded with the curse and every night demons go after him trying to devour him, and puts everyone around him in danger, for example the old man and girl who tried to give him a ride on their chariot ended up dead because of the skeletons. And Guts at that point wasn't prepared to go out of his way to protect someone. So when he showed the darkness to Jill he really meant it that she should be prepared to such a horrible journey ahead. He only learns to protect others while fighting to protect Casca every night. And is only then that he needs to rely on others to help him protect her.

Yes, I've always held this chapter in very high regard as well; Godot dying/their last meeting, his harsh words of wisdom, Guts' introspection, Guts' coming "home" in a sense, to the only loved ones he has left. And yeah the blacksmith analogies are pretty clever as well. Nice vid/analysis 👍

I actually saved the two images that Godo quotes hate and sadness. This was back in highschool for me but I love seeing this surface suddenly.

I just realized the symbolism of Guts leaving his sword to be fixed and going one night to think and face his demons without it, the sword (nicked and cracked) pretty much symbolized himself at the time, with all the cracks to his mental state, and after he gets it the next day, new and reforged, he also reforged the "blade of his soul" with a new resolve to look after Casca, basically making him leave an entirely new man Another realization is that him going one night without his sword and he feels powerless, and his demons are at full view for him to face, as said in the video, for the first time he is actually thinking about his life, as his sword was always his protection to hide those things away to avoid facing them. A bit late for realization, and probably a common one, but I'll at least keep this here for future me to remember Tldr: Guts is a lot more like a sword than I thought, and they have a relationship almost like it was an important character

It wasn’t really all for nothing, those two years gave him the strength to fight Zodd and worse. Even if unintentionally, he saved a ton of people.

One of my only issues with berserk when I begun reading it was Erica and Gudo they randomly appeared it felt like I missed a chapter or something. Never imagined how important they would be to bringing guts back.
@agamemnonofmycenae52585 жыл бұрын
They did not so much appear randomly,as that Guts needed a blacksmith at that point and Skull Knight with his awesome glimpse into causality brought him to the best one yet!Gudo forged him into the Black Swordsman(even before he met Guts)and, in his twilight, offered him some advice about his path onward and what he should value,whatever the machinations of destiny may entail.He fits perfectly in the narrative.And his introduction is not more sudden than the one with Skull Knight.

Johannes Fotiadis but like when they meet guts is like hey Erica hows it going again. And hi blacksmith nice to see you again. When we had ni prior knowledge of their existences.

Am I missing something here? In volume 10 Guts is talking about how he went to mountains and met them there and was spend time training there. And sparks. That was good enough character introduction.

My absolute favorite chapter. Not only because it brings Guts down and "breaks" him in a good way, because you need to break open old wounds so they can heal... It also is, in my opinion, the most important chapter to bridge the Black Swordsman Arc with all other ones. Early Guts is such a wildly different character to both the golden age and even lost children Guts. We didn't know about anyone or anything back then and just thought that Guts is some edgy know-it-all with some dark past, too edgy for us to know. But everything about that was just a wall, something he built up to hide his own fears. A wall not broken down by massive monsters, but by a small child and an old man. A lesser author would've just shoved aside the Black Swordsman Arc and made it that Guts is just now like that. Miura however used this as an amazing way to slowly get rid of the edge and turn back to the Guts we grew to love. You didn't talk about it, but after the chapter, Guts thinks about if he did the same mistake again. If he left the people that were most important to him again for some goal he didn't even really understand. But then he stands up and says that this time, it WILL be different. Black Swordsman Guts would've just smirked and ran away to fight more monsters. But this Guts knows that this might be his final chance to save Casca. Something that comes to play again at the end of the Conviction arc. Man, I just fucking love Berserk.

I also really enjoyed this story line. Godo is truly a legendary black smith. My theory is that in the future up coming apocalypse. It is gonna be the God hand vs the horse men. We have already seen 2 out of the 4 possible horse men. In early 2021 I hope.
