Wow, I never heard of that term before. Cotoroy (I don’t know how to spell it) finish! Whenever I varnish violins, I felt like the spruce side absorbed more. Even after a base. It just sucked it off the brush. I never realized it was the lines in the grain. I must have been filling my lines with varnish every time I did it. Lol Not realizing it. I am going to use that phase now. Cortoroy like the fabric. I like that.

I always wanted to revarnish an old violin, just because im curious bout it. But im not sure i'd done this work as perfect as your work 😊

I think I saw one Violinmaker apply a clear varnish layer first. Maybe that's to avoid the issue where the top soaks up a lot more varnish and gets more colored?

Do you buy or make your own spirit varnish? Your violin looks great!

Good day! Tell us, please, exactly how you prepare the varnish you used for this beautiful violin.

Is this really sprit varnish? How can he touch same places several times without dissolving the previous layer?
@berlmendenhall11778 жыл бұрын
+DutchViolins There are things that will slow the drying and penetration into previous layers. Certain resins will slow drying, the addition of essential oil will slow things down a bit. This is a spirit alcohol varnish.

Are you applying the clear final finish

Very useful video! It would also be nice to learn about what kind of preparation you use for applying spirit varnish to both spruce and maple surfaces. Would shellac work to seal spruce? The reason I ask is both spirit varnish and shellac use alcohol as the solvent. Do you ever seal the wood with egg white? (Go Bucs!)

Hallo, can i ask some advice? I do using spirit varnish but each time i try to add/spread more varnish on the same layer it make a bad texture. Did i mix the varnish & spirit wrong? I mix 1(varnish): 3(spirit) since 1:1 mixture is too thick and hard to spread. Did the spirit quality make different? Thankyou

Can you disclose the formulae for the spirit varnish? It will be of huge help for the people to test various formulae and choose what they like most. Or can you confirm if it is one of the below: 3 liter of Denatured alcohol 400 grams of Gold Shellac 200 grams of Sandarac 80 grams of Mastic 50 grams of Siam Benzoin or 1 liter of Denatured alcohol 100 grams of Gold Shellac 100 grams of Rosin 50 grams of Castor Oil 20 grams of Siam Benzoin (optional)

what's a corduroy finish?
@berlmendenhall93356 жыл бұрын
Matt I'll see you this weekend. Thank you for all the comments. A courdory finish is what happens when you finish with scrapers. The soft wood compressed and the hard Reed lines stand proud by a slight fraction.
