In this animated feature by noted Japanese director Hayao Miyazaki, 10-year-old Chihiro (Rumi Hiiragi) and her parents (Takashi Naitô, Yasuko Sawaguchi) stumble upon a seemingly abandoned amusement park. After her mother and father are turned into giant pigs, Chihiro meets the mysterious Haku (Miyu Irino), who explains that the park is a resort for supernatural beings who need a break from their time spent in the earthly realm, and that she must work there to free herself and her parents.

one thing I really appreciate about this film is Chihiro herself. She feels and acts like a real kid. She's clumsy, she is scared and unsure of herself but her growth throughtout the movie is simply great. She digs deep and faces her situations with courage despite her fears. Such a good film.

To be “spirited away” means to be taken away suddenly, like The Pied Piper of Hamlin style, or simply vanishing without trace. Here, it’s a double entendres, referring to the actual spirits as well.

Interesting to note: Not only is this the first anime film in history that won an Oscar, but some of the animators and crew who worked on this movie sprung out to do their own films in the years that followed. Like they were inspired by this and incorporated the visuals and character designs into their own work. In fact, since the English dub featured Chihiro’s voice Daveigh Chase, she worked double duty since Spirited Away and Disney’s Lilo & Stitch released within a year apart from each other.

When this movie came out, I was about Chihiro's age. It left a huge impact in me and marked me as a person, making me who I am today. I recommend people to play this kinds of movies to their kids, it's really an eye opening experience and an interesting way to see the world from a young age and onwards.

30:15 The boiler man said that Haku had said when he'd first arrived there that he didn't have any home to return to or that he'd lost his home (depends on what language the script is in but the meaning is the same), it was because his river had been drained out and paved over. No wonder he wasn't able to remember his name or where he came from before, he had no ties to it. And he must have been a young river unlike the river guardian who came to the bathhouse earlier.

The masked spirit was friendly with Sen, and it liked her and wanted to be her friend. That's why it kept offering her gifts. But she would only take what she needed from it, and refused everything else. The rest of the place though... it got infected by their greed and went insane, giving away 'gold', eating more, and getting hungrier in a feedback loop. Giving it the medicine made it expel that corruption. Messily. Oh, and it could only enter in the first place because it was invited in by someone with the authority to do so, just like the paper charms lost power when they crossed the threshold. It wasn't a customer, but an employee said 'come in' so... The 'stink spirit' was a river spirit that had been tranformed by pollution. She helped cure it, and it was grateful, so it gave her extremely powerful medicine. Yubaba, as master of this bathhouse, has certain rules she has to follow that come with the role. Like, for example, giving a job to anyone who asks. She breaks the rules, she loses her magical authority and all the perks that come with it.

Chihiro means “A thousand voyages” (as well as many other interpretations) while Sen means only “One thousand”. The allegory here is that Yubaba has stripped Chihiro of everything but her numerical or monetary value by stealing part of her name

The english dub of this actually isn't bad. Chihiro is voiced by Daveigh Chase(Lilo)and it was released by Disney, so a number of actors from the company showed up(Zira from "Simba's Pride"as Yubaba, David Ogden Stiers(Jumba)as Kamaji, Susan Egan(Meg from Hercules)as Lin, etc;) Miyazaki has said that Lin is a weasel spirit, she just looks human. This is my favourite of Miyazaki's films, so imaginative and beautiful. And I don't care if that food turns me into a pig, I would eat it.

Miyazaki and his teams are so creative when it comes to world building and getting you immersed very quickly. I really hope you continue to watch more of Studio Ghibli films. To be fair they are not bad parents. Raising children is extremely different in Japan as it is a safe country. Parents in Japan let their very young kids go to school by themselves or run errands too....unthinkable in some countries but very normal there.

It probably looks that way here because in America we've had stranger danger campaigns as a result of increased attention to child abductions in the country. After Polly Klass and Samantha Runnion made headlines in the US, the culture shifted to keep children under supervision at all times. I don't know how seriously Japan takes kidnapping, but I personally think any child aged eight or younger needs to be accompanied.

@@DaDunge For some reason we don't have that unspoken agreement in America. For us, strangers are strangers and only family and established friends are allowed to supervise children. I can't say whether it's right or wrong because maybe Japan is more safe and reliable as a community, but in America outside a child's home, they're expected to only trust their known adults from home in a foreign place.
@DaDunge
@DaDunge 2 жыл бұрын
@@shannonmcelroy8454 Of course they should only trust known adults but that doesn't mean not relying on other adults. If a child feles that they're in trouble they should know to make a scene or ask for help. It's a damn diffrenc between asking a random person for help in a crisis and agreeing to go home, or into a vehicle, with a random perosn.

This anime can be called historical, as Miyazaki conquered the world's film academics, who gave him an Oscar in 2002, and thus this subgenre of animation was fixed throughout the world. Personally, my first anime from Miyazaki was Howl's Moving Castle, but Spirited Away is clearly amazing in terms of the level of symbolism and mesmerizing scenes. Reminds me of a box when you find more and more things with each viewing. It's funny that Chihiro's parents are to blame for all this madness, while she herself should be responsible for them.

the ending is like the story of Orpheus and Euridice. Euridice was killed on their wedding day by a snake bite. Orpheus travels to the underworld to bring her back. He's allowed to take her soul back to the mortal world as long as he doesn't look back at her until they're in the mortal world again. He makes it all the way there but just before crossing over he gives into the temptation to look, the worry that she isn't really there, and he see's her as she is then dragged back down. The ending of it differs: sometimes he kills himself in grief, sometimes her spirit kills him what would have happened if Chihiro looked back? Maybe she would have decided to stay in the spirit world. Who knows

This was the first Miyazaki film I ever saw. I was about 6 or 7 we had rented the dvd and I was sucked in and the only part that freaked me out was the oarents turned into pigs. Also I don’t know if you recognize the voiced for the dub in English but Chihiro was Daveigh Chase who was Lilo in Lilo and Stitch, Susan Egan was Lin who was Meg in Hercules, Jason Marsden was Haku who most Disney fans will know as the voice of Max, Goofy’s Son, The character that says “Welcome the rich man he’ not that hard to miss” is John Ratzenberger who has been in Every Pixar film (Ham the Piggy Bank and so many others), I love the detail that near the end of the film you see she still has the hairband her friends made her, Also the reason No Face acts the way he does is he copies how someone interacts with him so when Chihiro is kind to him he is nice, but when the greedy workers interact off him he mimics them. The bicycle that was in the river spirit is what Miyazaki once pulled from a river when he was young was the inspiration for that. The point of the film is to see Chihiro grow not just as a character, but as a person and she matures from an easily scared girl with a childlike personality to match her age to a hard-working, responsible, and brave young girl who has learned to put her fears aside for those she cares for. To protect her friends and rescue her parents from a spell that has turned them into livestock, Chihiro sheds her former personality and adapts to her environment to become a courageous, quick-witted and reliable girl.The strength of her bond with Haku as the story progresses eventually evolves into a very sincere form of love that dispelled Yubaba and Zeniba's respective curses on Haku. Chihiro was based on a real-life girl: the then-ten-year-old daughter of a friend of Miyazaki's. This girl also made Miyazaki continue working after promising retirement from filmmaking after Princess Mononoke. Also at the end Chihiro is leading her parents out not the other way around. Lastly she remembers everything that occurred and still has the hairband made by her friends

I love Hayao Miyazaki's (Studio Ghibli) movies. "Howl’s Moving Castle" & "My Neighbor Totoro" are my personal favorites. Studio Ghibli is SUPER STRICT & it's risky to react to them because they will almost always get taken & you can get a copyright strike, or even get you're channel shut down. So be super careful. The soot sprites are adorable. :) Most of the creatures you see in Chihiro's journey are yokai, a class of supernatural entities and spirits in Japanese folklore. You can find them in a lot of anime and manga. A similar series this movie I love is called, "Kakuriyo: Bed & Breakfast for Spirits." The main character Aoi, a girl with the ability to see spirits works at an ogre's inn to pay off her grandfather's debt after refusing to become the ogre's bride. It might still have even worked. Someone had just thrown it in there. When I was younger I half though the river spirits laugh was malevolent, later I realised how joyful it actually was.

In Japanese folklore, spiriting away (Japanese: Kamikakushi (神隠し), lit. 'hidden by kami') refers to the mysterious disappearance or death of a person, after they had angered the gods (kami). There are numerous legends of humans being abducted to the spirit world by kami. Folklorist Kunio Yanagita recorded several tales of kamikakushi in Tōno Monogatari (遠野物語, Tōno Tales, 1909).

Hayao Miyazaki does have a fantastical mind with deep layers of themes (this being a coming of age story but also an allegory towards consumerism) and lush environments, Miyazaki has often used environmentalism in his themes, you can see it here with the Sludge spirit actually being a polluted river spirit, but yeah the studios do have at it with reactors. The dubs are often really good with Ghibli too, highly recommend Howl's Moving Castle, Castle in the Sky, Kiki's Delivery Service, Ponyo, From Up on Poppy Hill, and Princess Mononoke It is confusing, but only Chihiro is human in the bath house, everyone else are Yokai (Japanese spirits), there are a lot that have a human-like form or can disguise themselves to look like humans

Spirited Away was the first Studio (cough), you know that one, that I ever saw. It was also my first Japanese anime movie, so it holds a special place for me and like you, I didn't quite understand some stuff, but having seen a lot of Disney, Pixar and Dreamworks, seeing this movie was a breath of fresh air! I love the scenery, music, characters, story, everything! What I always get out of this movie is the idea of change. Chihiro was sad about moving to a new place and then going into this spirit world throws her off. In the end she realizes that she is more than capable of handling anything that comes her way. She gains confidence in herself in a strange world. Easily one of the best anime movies ever made!

The “stink spirit” is supposed to be a river god, but his river is polluted by humans, so he went to the bath house to seek help. After all the garbage was pulled out from him (the river), he became his original form as a dragon made of water and left gold rubbles from the bottom of the river sands as a gift

quick summary if you’re confused this might help; chihiro (i think that’s how it’s spelled) was trapped in a town full of spirits and haku was there bc according to the english version he stole a gold seal from ziniba and got fooled into working for yababa (If i’m wrong please let me know sry) and chihiro had to save her parents who’d been turned into pigs and it was revealed at the end of the movie that haku was a river spirit who saved chihiro when she was little and that’s why they remembered each other

Spirited is usually the first anime fans nag reactors to do, since it’s the most “Japanese”, but there are plenty of earlier Hayao Miyazaki classics on video, like “My Neighbor Totoro”, “Kiki’s Delivery Service” and The Castle of Cagliostro”. Also, there’re plenty of non-Ghibli anime classics to be explored-I’ve already gotten one reactor to watch Project A-Ko, but still waiting for someone to take on “Urusei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer”.

Hayao Miyazaki is a master filmmaker and story teller. His Studio Ghibli has been compared to Disney. The two have worked together somewhat in a complicated relationship as Disney was its sole distribution here in the U.S. If you can get your hand on the Studio Ghibli Special Edition Collection, you should, as it has 25 of their best anime from the classics such as My Neighbor Toro, Graves of the Fireflies (based on a true story), Princess Mononoke, Whisperer of the Heart, Howl’s Moving Castle, The Red Turtle, and many more including the Oscar-winning Spirited Away.

You will find throughout a lot of Miyazaki films that topics like pollution, spirituality, and guns vs swords to be very prominent. Nature and environment are things he has talked about and shown a lot. And the ideas of old vs new tech and how they have major pros and cons especially in the wrong hands. And of course the many talks of war in his more mature animations. Just, I can't wait to see you watch more of studio ghibli's films.

omg yesss, my man, you've been reacting to masterpieces of anime back to back!!! I understand that for someone with no experience in anime all of this can be confusing and weird looking but that's just how anime works and it makes it so unique, you'll never see such rich stories and representation of culture in any media, so here's quick insight from me as a huge nerd of Japanese culture and anime in general: 1. The title "Spirited Away" or Kamikakushi (in Japanese) is translated literally 'hidden by kami', refers to the mysterious disappearance or death of a person, after they had angered the gods (kami). So if Chihiro wouldn't have make it back with her parents she'll be literally disappeared. 2. The creator, Hayao Miyazaki, said that the movie was inspired by Japanese myths that were once well-known by members of his generation and now forgotten by the younger generation. 3. All these creatures and spirits that we see are really ugly and weird looking, well that's the Japanese gods for you 😅😅 literally if you'll look up supreme beings in Japanese folklore they are scary as all hell even those who have good intensions and represent peace. The only normal looking Japanese god that I can remember at the moment is Inari, goddess of fertility, rice, tea and sake (basically prosperity) and well known foxes, kitsune spirits, (i'm sure you've heard of them) are her protectors. Others look really weird and ugly, i'm not even talking about omis (demons), they're quite scary 😅 4. Those papers that were tormenting Haku and so friendly to Chihiro are so called Shikigami. In folklore they are used for exorcism and evicting spirits and demons and represent being, like small spirits or ghosts and sorcerers can use them with magical powers. And since Haku is a spirit they are attacking him whereas with Chihiro they're chill. 5. Chihiro, Yubaba and No Face (weird black spirit with mask instead of face) represent three different sides of a single person. No Face supposedly represents some of the darker personality traits we all struggle against, like obsession and greed. Apparently, No Face was named ‘No Face’ to emphasize that people are multifaceted beings who are more complex than you would know judging by just one single aspect of their character. Yababa represents cruelness and power obsession, and Chihiro represents anxiety, notice how she's always trembling and as you noted she stumbles a lot - that a good old anxiety 😅 6. I find it extremely heart warming that Haku is actually the spirit of the river from near Chihiro’s childhood home, so who knows, maybe the two friends could be reunited if Chihiro revisits that same river one day. P.S. Please react to Princess Mononoke, that one is incredible and yeah, I'm still proving my point that Attack on Titan is the greatest anime of all times, it's not so heavy based on Japanese culture, it's more westernized even character names, so it'll be somewhat easier to perceive, please react to it, you'll be speechless 😁 😁😁

The ending of this movie always reminds me of the ending of a Twilight Zone episode, the narration I mean. “Tangible manifestation is very often left as evidence of trespass… even from so intangible a quarter… as The Twilight Zone.” The leaves and branches prove it wasn’t a dream or a hallucination.

Someone else may have already explained this better than me but; No-face, or Kaonashi as he was named in Japan, reflects the emotions and personalities of those around him. He is kind and helpful to Chihiro because that's how she behaved to him. Most of the spirits in the bathhouse are greedy and selfish, and that's who No-face became, especially after eating the greedy frog employee. That's why there was no need for Chihiro to worry after they left the bathhouse, and why she could trust him- they left that environment, so No-face was no longer being affected by all those negative emotions. Another note since you asked about Lin and the other bathhouse employees; they are all spirits [yokai], and most of the employees are animal spirits of some sort. Many of them are frogs, Kamaji the boiler man is a tsuchigumou [spider yokai], and Lin herself is a byakko, which is a white kitsune, but was also translated as a weasel. A bit complicated, but that's translation for you. I love Spirited Away lore if you couldn't tell...

I was around 10 years old when I first watched this movie, the things that are present in this movie are meant to be the way they are as they're the very representation of adult's world, from the bathhouse to the idea of losing your name. For a child, adult's world is scary, full of the things that are unfamiliar to you, you started working but eventually you lost yourselves in the process, and we need to always remember who we are and our identity even when we become adults.

Also, I really recommend Howl's Moving Castle, I love how Miyazaki touch on the idea of self love with that one and it's a beautiful love story. Howl is by far my most favorite Ghibli male lead. A lot of Ghibli movies are over the top with their worlds, but they also make you feel real with the main characters.

A lot of the world building here borrows from Japanese mythology and even classic mythology. For instance, you need to be careful about eating food when you enter the Faerie Realm. That's a classic rule in fairy tales. Also, the idea of turning people into pigs turns up in Greek Mythology. In the Odyssey, the hero Odysseus' crew is tricked by the sorceress Circe into eating a meal which has been laced with a magic potion, which turns them all into pigs. It's up to Odysseus to save them. If you want to watch other Studio Ghibli movies, I suggest your next viewing should be *Howl's Moving Castle (2004).* It's the same high quality type of film, with equally interesting themes and worldbuilding. After that, I'd suggest watching *My Neighbor Totoro (1988)* and *Grave of the Fireflies (1988)* which were released as a double feature, despite the fact that they are very different films. Those two movies really show the breadth of what Studio Ghibli is capable of. I won't say anymore about the stories, as I don't want to spoil them, but they'd both make really amazing reaction videos. Even if this does get taken down (although I hope it doesn't), consider doing the others for Patreon.

Miyazaki admits that at a difficult moment for him, when he was seriously considering whether to pursue a career in animation, he was strongly impressed by the 1957 Soviet animated film The Snow Queen directed by Lev Atamanov, showing that cartoon characters can act the same way. , as well as live actors, and animated films can be as touching as other forms of art.
