This movie is timeless because I believe most of us can relate to the character. Transitioning from a kid to the reality of adulthood. I think everyone must watch this and I will require every teen like my niece.

I have a strong nostalgic fondness for Spirited Away given it was one of the few Ghibli films I saw as a kid, and needless to say it holds up perfectly as an adult too. It's a wonderful modern fairytale, sometimes funny, sometimes sad, sometimes very scary, but always a delightful and exciting adventure packed with memorable characters, gorgeous animation and Joe Hisaishi's best score (and that's some real tough competition). It's not my favourite Ghibli film but it's definitely up there as one of their best.

I watched Spirited Away for the 1st time in 2020 and had me falling in love with the genre. I feel like I never watch the same film twice. There are always new things I discover with every rewatch. That, to me, is timeless art. ❤

As I kid I used to rent Spirited Away and I really thought that I was Chihiro!! Even now as an adult, I feel like I'm always transported to their world when I watch it. I watched the play version that was released in theaters this past spring and omg! I loved it as well, it made me appreciate the story more. Of course, the animation is of its own, but it was nice to see a retelling of Spirited Away. Watching Spirited Away is truly like hugging an old friend

this is the first movie i remember watching as a kid too! i was literally obsessed with it, i rewatched it soooo many times, and each time i fell in love with every aspect. now as an adult i appreciate other things, but in the end it's the movie i'm the most emotionally attached to, because it makes me feel things i can't even explain. i used to relate to chihiro, i loved that melancholic vibe, that loneliness that surrounds the film. it makes me get into this weird emotion that's a mix of childhood memories, sadness, hope and peace. the movie of my life, i'll forever treasure it

omg hearing about your introduction to/discovery of spirited away is so wild to me bc our experiences are quite similar! i had a friend in elementary school who had a few ghibli films and whenever i went over to her house, we’d watch them together. we were so mesmerized by them despite not knowing how to turn on sub or dub - both of us being native english speakers. we would sit in front of the tv together for hours, totally taken by the visuals. spirited away left such a lasting effect on me, and i never ever forgot about it (even though i didn’t know it’s name lol). i eventually moved away and lost touch with my friend, but that memory stayed in a corner of my brain for years until one day in high school i happened upon a trailer for it on youtube!!! from then on, it’s hold on me was set in stone and i was absolutely obsessed with ghibli (and still am hahaha). it’s so cool to think that others have had similar experiences with this total gem :-) it’s still my favourite film of all time, and this vid was a great reminder of why it’s so beautiful 💛

I share the idea that Yubaba has a mix of evil and goodness, is a nuanced character, but give Chihiro a job I didn't see it as a positive like you, to my eyes it was exploitative child labor to her own gain of power, even if it was a learning experience to Chihiro.

You’re right that she wanted to gain power over her and I love how nuanced her character is, same as so many ghibli characters. I feel like she could’ve easily gotten rid of her but didn’t which is so interesting

I agree so much with you on the "villain" part! Even though they function as antagonists, they come across as normal characters, who's personal goals just don't happen to align with Chihiros, but they are not evil, in fact, they're actually quite likable and most often reasonable. That is something though I have noticed in many Ghibli movies, I am obsessed with the way Miyazaki portrays antagonists! In his worlds, no one is in fact purely evil, everyone's just who they are with both good and bad within them, but that goes for protagonists as well!

One of the few Studio Ghibli movies where I adore both the dubbed and subtitled versions equally. Suzanne Pleshette as Yubaba and Jason Marsden as Haku are so iconic. And in the subbed version the ending and last shot is incredible.

I've always liked and enjoyed Spirited Away, but my appreciation for it got even bigger when I saw the release of the filmed version of the stage show. That was such an incredible experience, and I have sorely needed to rewatch this since watching the stage show. Joe Hisaishi is a master.

I have a strong nostalgic connection to Spirited Away given it was the one Ghibli film I saw as a kid. It stuck with me for so many years and I have rewatched it countless times, and needless to say, it holds up perfectly as an adult too. Joe Hisaishi's score was also so beautiful and tied the film together in a wonderful package of everything. It had heart, it had these creepy elements, it had life lessons, a sense of wonder, and adventure, all topped with a beautiful score and gorgeous jaw-dropping animation. The way you talked about the 'villains' was so interesting and I agree. Despite serving as antagonists, they are shown as regular people whose personal objectives just don't coincide with Chihiros'. They aren't bad, in fact; in most cases, they come to be rather likable and rational. Spirited Away was also one of the main reasons I also got into art and design. Hayao Miyazaki is inspiring to me. I remember revisiting it after many years as a teen and all my feelings I had as a kid came back, I felt that nostalgia but also I appreciated more about it like the animation, score, etc. Just an amazing film overall. Also trying to get my friends to watch but they haven't yet, like they are missing out big time.

Spirited Away was definitely the first movie I saw! I remember that my aunt showed me what to her was some random children’s movie but to me it was something different. Beautifully different. I remembered pieces of it at like 3-4 years old but they still stayed with me until I was 17-18 and was like “I remember pieces of this movie but what was it?” And then I found it again and watched it again and fell in love with everything now that I was older. This is a timeless movie for sure that will span years. Also I watch Spirited Away, Ponyo, Kiki’s Delivery Service, and When Marnie was There RELIGIOUSLY! Beautiful video! My heart gets happy whenever I see studio ghibli content Everywhere!😊

Spirited Away is also my favorite Studio Ghibli movie and one of my favorite movies of all time. I really like that is building off of other great movies that have similar worlds like Alice in Wonderland and The Wizard of Oz, but with a japanese like folklore plot or context around it . I'm also in the lane that Chihiro and Haku have a deep and respectful friendship and not a romantic connection. I fined that most likely in the hands hollywood studios, they would probably pair the characters as a couple because of superficial and commercial trope reasons. Also No-face is also a character that I like, not aesthetically but plot wise, as character that changes because of empathetic views of Chihiro and Zeniba, understanding that a context can or could change behaviors. I really hope I get to see the new film when it comes to Latin America.

I enjoy and respect your opinions about Studio Ghibli films and this is no exception. Spirited Away is a phenomenal film from an incredible director. I’ve probably watched SA at least 50 times and have no intention of stopping as each viewing brings even more appreciation. SA and Castle in the Sky are my co-favorite Studio Ghibli films. I’m 70 years old now and have been a fan since the 1980s when my sons were young. Im looking forward to your insight about The Boy and the Heron. Thanks for the video.

I still remember seeing this in movie theaters opening weekend of expansion (after the limited run). I was blown away by it. Still one of my favorite movie-going experiences in my entire life. To be transported away to the world of the story - the beautiful animation, storytelling, and music. Spirited Away had a profound impact on me. It will always be one of my favorite films. (I named my dog Chihiro because of this film).

It is my favourite Studio Ghibli movie too. I still have my VHS from when I was 7, the first time I saw it and was blown away too. Actually something that I like from the movie is the mistery of not being everything explained, I guess if Miyazaki would’ve handed us the movie explaining everything for me it would be less attractive, cause it’s part of the movie too. The animation, the score… it’s just perfect

I still vividly remember the first time I watched Spirited Away (I was 8 or 9 years old) and whilst I still feel the same each time i watch it, something I have really enjoyed is how my interpretation of it has changed at different points in my life. One of my favourite things about the film is how it is so different from the standard protagonist / antagonist storylines in most films where you have good and bad characters. I love how the characters don't necessarily fall under either category (and how much this throws some people because we are so used to storytelling following a specific formula)

I have never seen this movie, but I understand your feelings about it perfectly. I think we all have that movie that just really speaks to us. I feel that way about Inside Out. I loved Inside Out as a kid for how creative, colorful, funny, and emotional it got. Now that I’ve rewatched it recently as an adult, I love it for those reasons, but also really appreciate other things about it like the filmmaking itself, and how the movie’s message has turned out to actually help me in life

The second Ghibli film I saw after The Wind Rises. Borrowed it from a friend who's a huge fan. Needless to say, after viewing it myself, so was I. Adventurous, mystical, whimsical, wholesome and warm. There is so much that can be said but from when I saw it, I thought, "Refreshing." I have only known it for just 5 years, yet you're right, it really does invoke a sense of nostalgia. I had to see the other films from Ghibli and related works. I continued to watch more films from Japan, not just anime. I credit this film for really getting me to cross over into more Asian cinema/shows. I knew it was a masterpiece when the credits rolled and am thankful it introduced me to many, many more. And for that it will always hold a place in my heart.

I saw Spirited Away when in first released in theaters in America over twenty years ago and has remained one of my favorite movies ever since. I was only ten years old, and my exposure to anime was limited to things like Pokemon, Sailor Moon and Digimon. But I really wanted to see this looking at an upcoming movies section of a children’s magazine I sadly don’t remember the name of. The image of it they included was No Face giving the bath tokens to Chihiro/Sen, and I was mystified by it, having no context of what was happening or who No Face was. A few months later, I saw in Disney Magazine that Disney was releasing the English dub and eventually saw tv spots with critical acclaim. I was desperate to see it by now, in spite of living in the middle of nowhere with no nearby theaters playing it. I asked my parents to take me to Boston (which we did every couple of months and was the nearest city playing it), and I saw it in English and was hypnotized by it. It’s all I thought about for months after. I told friends about it. I watched over and over on dvd. And it might have been the first animated film I watched subtitled (maybe even film in general? I don’t remember). I tracked down every Ghibli movie I could watch, as Disney released them on dvd, only to realize I had watched one of Miyazaki’s movies on vhs, Kiki’s Delivery Service, and watched it many times and didn’t even know it! Like most, my taste in entertainment has changed a lot since I was a kid, but Spirited Away still remains one of my favorite movies period. And I want to believe the morals of movies like Spirited Away changed me into the person I am today.
