Create Family Cabin Sign Post- Our Journey :: Episode #4

Located in the mountains of Colorado. Not being a woodworker, I am impressed with my skills to get this mostly done in a day. My family cabin sign is so pretty I want it to last. So, for this post I added a roof to help protect it from the elements.
My only concern is that is might be too big.. ? hmm.. Hope it looks good once I put it in the ground in the spring time. (subscribe to see me dig the hole and put in the ground.)

The only thing different I may have done was use 1/2" dow rod with wood glue instead of the carriage bolts. I just like the look better.

Love your video and thanks for this tutorial. Please help me understand, because I am building a sign for the first time and I'm using 1/2 inch carriage bolts. Your tip at 7:40 (timeline in video) says to use a 9/16 drill bit. Isn't 9/16 larger than 1/2 inch? You said to use smaller than the carriage bolt. Just trying to understand. Thank you :)

9/16 is larger. You really just need to make sure there is enough "meat" for the carriage bolt to grab a hold of on the bolt head side. Personally I would of used wood glue on the two 4x4 pieces also.

Beautiful sign and the post was well made. Here in UK when I put up my fence I used Meta spikes about 2ft long which I hammered into the ground. They have a 6" deep square cup at the top, above ground, which is open one corner with 2 bolt holes to ensure the post has a tight fit but the post can be removed if required. These spikes save the post going rotten which eventually occurs when its directly put into the ground. There are different makes. I'm too late for this vid (2.8.19) but the info may have a future use. Sure they have something similar in America.
