Subscribed. If you decide to continue down this rabbit hole you can expect a *lot* of new subscriptions; #Pentatonix fans are enthusiastic about reaction videos to anything our favorite band puts out. Some useful terminology: • pentaholic = Pentatonix fan • PTX = abbreviation for Pentatonix - extremely useful in searches • the trio = Kirstin, Mitch, and Scott • Mitch slap = what you get the first time you realize how incredible Mitch's voice is. • Avi-lanche = like a Mitch slap, except with Avi instead of Mitch. • KO = like a Mitch slap or Avi-lanche, except with Kevin Olusola. • Matt attack = like a Mitch slap, Avi-lanche, or KO, except with Matt. • Great Scott! (or ButterScott) = like a Mitch slap, Avi-lanche, KO, or Matt attack, except with Scott. • Unfortunately, we haven't been able to come up with a good name for what Kirstin does to us. 😔 (Note: You never become immune to Mitch slaps, Avi-lanches, KOs, Matt attacks, Great Scotts, or the similar things that Kirstin does. They always have the ability to surprise us.) You can't go wrong listening to anything Pentatonix has released; it's all gorgeous. But all pentaholics have our own personal favorites that we like to recommend. These are some of my favorites: • "Hallelujah" (the official video, with Avi) • "Hallelujah" ( a recent live performance, with Matt and a new arrangement: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iZaTc6B6mb-ojpI ) • "Imagine" (the official video) • "Bohemian Rhapsody" (the official video) • "Sound of Silence" • "Run To You" (an original, written by Avi and Kevin) • "Happy Now" (another original) • "Daft Punk Medley" (their first Grammy winner) • "O Come All Ye Faithful" • "O Holy Night" (they did a totally new recording for their 2023 Christmas album; you can find the official video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iJatcohoor2gbtksi=upj2Q3vLqigVEtgm ) • "Pure Imagination / Christmas Time is Here" (preferably the live Vevo recording) • "Kiss From a Rose" (preferably the live Vevo recording - both of the Vevo recordings are available on KZbin) • "You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch" • "The Lucky Ones" (an original, written by Scott) • "Thank You" (an original, written by Scott and his then fiancé, now husband, Mark Manio Hoying, shortly after the end of COVID lockdown, about how much easier it was to get through that time because they were together) • "The Kevin Show/Kevin's Fifth." This is a live feed from a concert they gave in Owensboro, Kentucky, Kevin's home town: kzbin.info/www/bejne/epOmkqasmLOrbZo and this is the very special performance of "Kevin's Fifth" (without "The Kevin Show") from Kevin's birthday in 2022: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bZ6TmGquic18jdUsi=99F7iG5qkdgPCm43 Additionally, *if* you're familiar with _"The Wizard Of Oz"_ (the 1939 movie starring Judy Garland), I recommend "Todrick Hall - The Wizard of Ahhhs (ft. Pentatonix)": kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5y5ln6YZ86aqMk If you've never seen the movie it won't make sense, so take care of that first. One advantage to reacting to "The Wizard of Ahhhs" is that you won't need to obscure the video to avoid copyright claims. Most of Pentatonix's copyrights are owned by their publisher, RCA, and RCA is notorious for getting reaction videos taken down over copyright issues, but the copyrights for "The Wizard of Ahhhs" are owned by Todrick Hall, and Todrick seems to be more interested in good publicity than in stomping on innocent reactors. (I regret to say that Todrick has gotten a lot of bad publicity in recent years, for very good reasons; he appears to be something of a jerk. But making copyright claims against other KZbinrs isn't one of his vices.)

@@erinna_the_white_rose I've saved text files with all that info; all I had to do was copy and paste, and then edit a tiny bit (remove "The Prayer" from the recommendations list, for instance). I make the same comments frequently. What this means for *you* is that the next time you react, if you find yourself forgetting their names I'll probably copy and paste the "Members of PTX" comment that's tailored for that song. No skin off my nose, and maybe it will take some of the pressure off you. I should probably mention that #Pentatonix are rather proud of their fan base. Pentaholics are some of the kindest, most welcoming fans there are. When we argue we're open to being proven wrong. The *only* reactors I've seen attacked by pentaholics (including me, in this case) are a pair who got angry that Pentatonix had covered "Imagine," because they adored The Beatles and thought it was some kind of sacrilege for anyone else to cover a Beatles song. And if you're shaking your head saying, "Wait! I didn't know that 'Imagine' was a Beatles song!" that's because it isn't. John Lennon wrote it after The Beatles broke up. ( *And* it's crazy to make one group sacrosanct. ) In other words, don't worry. No one in *this* community will think less of you for getting their names wrong; we'll just correct you when you do.

The singers: The two soloists in this are Mitch Grassi (pronounced Grah'-see, emphasis on the first syllable), natural contratenor, and Scott Hoying, lyric baritone. Mitch has a range of just over six octaves and is considered by all the other members of #Pentatonix to be the best singer in the band. He's known for his ethereal high vocals, and switches seamlessly between chest voice, mixed voice, and head voice. Shawn Stockman, of Boyz II Men, has said that Mitch has "one of the prettiest voices I have ever heard in my life." And we refer to that surprised look people get when they first hear Mitch sing as "being Mitch slapped." You've been Mitch slapped. Don't let it worry you; it's happened to all of us, generally more than once because Mitch is full of surprises. In describing a man's vocal range, "lyric" means that the actual range exceeds the nominal range. In Scott's case, he sings everywhere from very low in a normal bass range through a normal tenor range, with an excellent falsetto on top. In live performances Scott typically takes over the bass harmony line when their bass has a solo. According to everyone in Pentatonix, *including* Scott, Scott is the member who is most likely to forget the lyrics, so of *course* it turned out that his voice was most suited to sing Andrea Bocelli's part in "The Prayer." And no, he doesn't speak Italian; he had to learn this by rote, and he worked very hard to get the pronunciation right. The beatboxer is Kevin Olusola (pronounced Oh-loosh"-oh-luh', primary emphasis on the second syllable, secondary emphasis on the fourth), beatboxer extraordinaire. We don't get to hear Kevin sing as often as we'd like because he's generally too busy being the entire percussion section, but when he does sing he has a lovely tenor voice that occasionally descends to the uppermost reaches of a baritone range. He's also known for the beauty of his falsetto, which goes higher than Mitch's and Kirstin's voices. Kevin has perfect pitch. He began piano lessons at age 4, cello at age 6, and alto saxophone at age 10. When he was a teenager he performed at Carnegie Hall twice, once on the cello and once on the saxophone. He beatboxes while playing the cello, which he refers to as "celloboxing." He graduated from Yale in 2011 with a pre-med major and had already been accepted to Yale Medical School when he gave up his dream of becoming a brilliant surgeon to pursue his dream of becoming a professional beatboxer instead. He speaks five languages fluently: English, French, German, Spanish, and Mandarin Chinese. He's one of the kindest people in the world, and when he laughs the whole planet seems like a brighter place. Note that in this song he is also providing some of the high harmonies. Kirstin (also called Kirstie, which rhymes with thirsty) Maldonado is the only woman in Pentatonix. Kirstin sings anywhere from low alto through coloratura soprano, the highest soprano range, and she has fantastic whistle notes on top of that. Recently Pentatonix has begun calling her an "alto soprano." Pentatonix has had two bass singers. Their first one was Avi (pronounced Ah'-vee, emphasis on the first syllable) Kaplan, lyric bass. Avi is an operatically trained basso profundo (his lowest notes have blown out speakers in live performances), but his range extends to about the middle of a normal tenor range. Avi left Pentatonix in 2017, for a variety of personal reasons. He has since gone on to have a very successful solo career; I highly recommend subscribing to his KZbin channel: youtube.com/@AviKaplanMusic However, "The Prayer" is a more recent release, so in this video we have Matt Sallee (pronounced Suh-lee', emphasis on the second syllable), who joined Pentatonix in late 2017 or early 2018, depending on how you figure it. He has now been with Pentatonix longer than Avi was. Matt is another lyric bass. In addition to being the newest member of Pentatonix, Matt is also the youngest member, and I'm told that bass voices improve with age. So it's hard to be sure just what Matt's range is, because it's still growing. To find his current range I recommend listening to a recent live performance of "Hallelujah" (though you might want to watch the official video of "Hallelujah" first so you can hear how Avi sang it). You can find that live performance here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iZaTc6B6mb-ojpI Matt's arrangement of the second verse seems to be designed to show off his full range, and it will blow you away. I don't believe he's at the basso profundo level yet, though I expect him to reach it within a year or two. But on the high end he's near the top of a normal tenor range. In this video, when the camera shows all five of them, from left to right we see Kevin, Kirstin, Scott, Mitch, and Matt.

#Pentatonix published this on their 2021 Christmas album, "Evergreen." Most pentaholics think this should have won a Grammy. Unfortunately, it's the publisher's responsibility to submit songs to the Academy, and RCA decided to submit the entire album rather than the one Grammy-worthy song on it. "Evergreen" (the album) was nominated, but it never had much of a chance of winning. And if I sound angry about that it's only because I am. Isn't that a gorgeous suit Scott is wearing? Do you notice that he ISN'T wearing a scarf, or gloves? That's because they aren't actually in a snowy forest; this was filmed indoors, on one of the most beautiful sets I've ever seen. Either Mitch or Kirstin could have sung the lead; they have much the same range and on occasion they sound very much alike. But Kirstin's real forte is belting out those high notes and Mitch's is ethereal (some would say angelic) vocals, which made Mitch the better choice to lead in "The Prayer." Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli each recorded solo versions of "The Prayer" for the 1998 film, _"Quest for Camelot."_ Dion's was in English and Bocelli's was in Italian. Later, they released a duet version on their albums "These Are Special Times" (1998 - Dion) and "Sogno" (1999 - Bocelli). Source: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Prayer_(Celine_Dion_and_Andrea_Bocelli_song) Obviously, #Pentatonix chose to cover the duet version, though they abbreviated Bocelli's part. And wouldn't you know that Scott would be the best choice for Andrea Bocelli's part, when Scott is the member of Pentatonix most likely to forget the lyrics (according to everyone in Pentatonix, including Scott)? No, he doesn't speak Italian; he had to learn this by rote, and he worked very hard to get the pronunciation right. According to people who do speak Italian he succeeded. Lyrics and English translation of the second verse: Scott: La luce che tu dai {The light that you give} Mitch: I pray we'll find your light Scott: Nel cuore resterà {In my heart it will remain} Mitch: And hold it in our hearts Scott: A ricordarci che {To remind us that} Mitch: When stars go out each night Scott: L'eterna stella sei {You are the eternal star} Mitch: Ooh oh Scott: Nella mia preghiera {In my prayer} Mitch: Let this be our prayer Scott: Quanta fede c'è {There is so much faith} Mitch: When shadows fill our day Scott: Lead us to a place Mitch: Guide us with your grace Both together: Give us faith so we'll be safe Sources: genius.com/Pentatonix-the-prayer-lyrics Translation from: dailyitalianwords.com/the-prayer-andrea-bocelli-celine-dion-lyrics-english-translation/

It's wonderful to see more reactors checking out Pentatonix. Yes, you had the name right, it's Scott Hoying, the tall blond guy. The other people are: Mitch Grassi, counter-tenor...the one with that extraordinary high-pitched voice, Kirstin (prefers Kirstie) Maldonado....lady with those blond curls, alto-soprano, Matt Sallee the lovely bass singer wearing that nice jacket, and Kevin Olusola... tenor, beatboxer and cellist. I'm pretty sure you know that the group is a capella ( but do very occasionally include an instrument...mostly Kevin on his cello...that he can play at concert level while beatboxing) and have 3 Grammys so far, one star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and numerous other awards. With over 200 songs in their repertoire, there lots to chose from. Some suggestions: Daft Punk medley, 90's Dance medley, Bohemian Rhapsody ( there are two versions...the older official video and a just released live version...you choose), Sound of Silence, Shallow, Radioactive, Say Something, Kiss From A Rose, New Rules/Are You That Somebody, Coffee In Bed (original), Be My Eyes (original).

I *_strongly_* recommend doing something to obscure any #Pentatonix official video that you react to; RCA (Pentatonix's publisher) is notorious for going after reaction videos for copyright violations, and anything that alters the video will make it easier to keep your reaction up. It can be as lityle as making the video translucent, so we can see you and your room through it, but do *something* to change it. Remember, the pentaholics aren't here to see the video; we've already seen it, probably several times. We're here for your reaction to it. We only need to see enough to know what visual effect you're reacting to (when the visuals are significant, which they sometimes are, though not in this song).
@erinna_the_white_roseАй бұрын
Thank you for the tips 😊 Yeah I used to do translucent and people complained.....horribly . I did try to one years ago but I got blocked . I was very new to the channel. Thank you for watching 👀 If u need anything im here Erinna_The_White_Rose.

@@erinna_the_white_rose Pentaholics are well aware of the problems reactors have keeping their videos up; you shouldn't get any complaints from us unless you do something like running the video as a mirror image, which messes up canned comments that reference left and right, or completely blank out not just #PTX's official video but also your reaction (yes, a reactor actually did that once - it was thoroughly weird). Actually, the *best* visual change I've seen used is one that puts what appears to be a rainy window in front of the official video. The only official PTX video I can think of that wouldn't work well with that one is "Happy Now," which actually uses a similar effect as part of the video.
