Spitfire Single Rail Transmission Overhauling - Part 1 - Disassembling

This transmission came to me partially disassembled. Lets explore how the single rail shifter works and then take the transmission apart for inspection. There will be two more videos later - one showing what and how to inspect and measuring tolerances, and then another on about assembling the transmission back together.

This gearbox was the result of serious rationalisation within British Leyland in the mid 70s… it was shared with Triumphs like the Spitfire, TR7 and Dolomite, but also the MG Midget and Morris Marina, and probably some others like vans etc….

Elin, another great video; very informative and well explained. I can't help but wonder what Insane Asylum they placed the poor engineer after he struggled to design the single-rail gearbox; what a devil of a puzzle! lol

Seen many of theses boxes, have fun. (I prefer the 3 rail box) if you want 1st synchro, use GT6 box or Spitfire mark 4.

Very interesting, we always avoided single rail boxes back in the day, regarding them as 'inferior' to the more normal design, having said that, the J-type Overdrive is superior to the D-type.

Yes the difference was mainly was the Ist/2nd gear syncro unit passes through the reverse idler gear when selecting 1st gear, and this continuous action eventually chips these gears, where as the non synchro box (3 rail) generally you are stationary before attempting to select 1st gear also I've seen the result of the pins drop out in the selector in the single rail box.
