In the heart of February, when the Spiti Valley dons its white winter cloak, our adventurous journey began. From Rakchham, we embarked on a snow-laden road trip toward Tabo, taking a detour through Chitkul-India’s last village. This is a tale of icy roads, breathtaking vistas, and adrenaline-pumping moments in one of the most treacherous yet mesmerizing terrains in the Himalayas.
Part 1: Rakchham to Chitkul - Snow, Slips, and Scenic Bliss
The route from Rakchham to Chitkul was a dream wrapped in white. Snow-covered deodar trees stood as sentinels along the icy roads. However, as we approached halfway, our journey to Chitkul was abruptly halted. The cars began skidding dangerously on the icy patches, forcing us to stop for safety.
But the adventure was far from over! The journey itself was worth every moment-playing in the snow, capturing panoramic shots of the Kinnaur ranges, and soaking in the serene beauty of the frozen Baspa River. Although we couldn’t make it to Chitkul, the magic of the journey compensated for the unfinished destination.
Part 2: Chasing the Impossible - Rakchham to Tabo
Our next leg was a 5.30-hour drive to Tabo, but winter had other plans. As we ascended toward the infamous Malling Nala, nature threw every challenge at us. Rocky cliffs loomed ominously above us, snowstorms blurred visibility, and the car skidded repeatedly on the frozen roads.
The clock ticked faster than we moved. By the time we reached Malling Nala, the sun had set, plunging us into darkness. The icy winds howled, and the treacherous narrow pass tested our nerves to the core. The once 5.30-hour journey stretched to a grueling 13 hours.
Despite the challenges, the thought of reaching Tabo kept us going. As we finally arrived late at night, the sense of accomplishment was unparalleled.
