Tocchet still looks like he can still kick the shit out of most people. Ha. I'm a huge huge Ranger fan. It's just crazy how after all these years when you grow up and your not some young idiot fan and you realize these guys are just cool down to earth guys. It's so cool to me. Tocchet was a tremendous player to have in your team. I would just love to sit down and have a beer with him and just talk hockey. So cool. This is the greatest hockey podcast on the planet. .....You guys did it..you got the greatest of all time. Congrats boys. Wayne Fucking Gretzky. Wow wow wow wow. Great job boys. I can listen to him talk for days. He was my sports hero growing up as a kid. Damn... He is such a down to earth man. I'll never ever forget that Canada Cup with and Mario. I was living in NYC, but I just had got that huge satellite dish. They had Canadian satellites and I had HNIC all the time. So those channels showed that 87 Canada Cup. I was in high school. That tournament changed my life. I'll never ever forget that tournament. I loved hockey, but after that I was obsessed. It's the greatest game in the world.

Honestly I have never seen Oates but the stats aren't relevant to the actual discussion to be fair. Gretzky might have more assists because he could see the ice better and spot more opportunities to make a pass that was good than Oates. At the same time Oates could have been able to pass a puck from point A to point B more accurately, but see less chances to do so results in less assists in a career. Both can be true. Still a hell of a take tho lol.

@asmrfan65432 жыл бұрын
Yeah but would you pick Vasilevskiy over Kuemper in a playoff pool in 2022? Tampa v Colorado final.. but I see Colorado breaking through. Tampa hasn't seen anything like this before. RA is on crack about the passing.. good lord. At least debate who was the 2nd best passer.. Oates isn't even a lock in that debate either.
@johnd26612 жыл бұрын
“After the Islanders won their third Cup in a row, are you taking Trottier or Gretzky? You’re taking Trottier, right?” No. Absolutely not. Not a fucking chance. The Islanders won their third Cup in a row following the 1981-82 season. During that season Gretzky put up 92-120-212; Trottier put up 50-79-129. Trottier didn’t even lead his team in scoring, trailing Mike Bossy’s 64-83-147. In ‘81-82, Bossy actually finished second in the the league in scoring-65 points behind Gretzky. The 65-point difference between first and second was the same as the difference between second and 39th. During the Islanders’ four straight Cup-winning seasons, Gretzky averaged 67-110-177; Trottier averaged 39-67-106. Bossy averaged 61-58-119. The Islanders were the better team during that stretch; Gretzky was already otherworldly. There’s no chance anyone would have taken Trottier over Gretzky based on team success.
@grep672 жыл бұрын
Hmmm this is debatable.. You are posting up points and hands down, Gretz takes it, but as a two way player? Gotta give that to Trotts..
@johnd26612 жыл бұрын
@@grep67 I probably added too much extraneous information. I completely agree that Trottier was a better two-way player. I also agree that points don’t always paint the most accurate picture in terms of overall play, but in this case the numbers are overwhelming for Gretzky. My point was this: Wayne mentioned the ‘81-82 season specifically. During that season, as a 21-year-old, he demolished the single-season goal and scoring records. The year in question, he outscored Trottier by 83 points. I don’t think any amount of backchecking can overcome that much of a scoring disparity. I don’t think anyone would have picked any player other than Wayne Gretzky following the specific season he brought up.
