Most American political parody or satire shills very heavily for one particular side of the political spectrum. This show is so much better because there are NO sacred cows on either side. I'm an American who'd given up on this type of show in the U.S. but I love "Spitting Image."
@julianhermanubis68003 жыл бұрын
@skrapyard444 Only someone who sees everything in a Manichean way from their own side would say that. Most Democrats aren't hardcore Marxists or street Antifa and most Republicans aren't Proud Boys or alt-right types. The media focuses on the circus freaks of each side rather than the median members of each party. If you go far enough to the left or far enough to the right, you will hit pure insanity and people who should never be in charge of any level of government. And, of course, a Stephen Colbert fan like yourself would like utterly one-sided humor. LOL
@kinggenderman18743 жыл бұрын
@Dennis Feenstra yup, it's not about politics but hate is so much more abundant on one side and it's sad to watch
@julianhermanubis68003 жыл бұрын
@Dennis Feenstra You can't even separate the different segments of American conservatism into coherent segments. You are combining the fundamentalist Christian right with the more incoherent members of the Trump fringe (who generally are more motivated by conspiracy theories than religious leadership from everything I've read), vaguely mention Classical Liberalism, leave out the overlapping but distinct Libertarians and Objectivists, leave out Catholic conservatives (who are definitely a distinct subgroup), leave out mainstream "pocketbook" voters (who've tended to be suburbanites), mostly leave out neoconservatives, leave out paleoconservatives (who may overlap with the religious right but are generally a separate group), and a number of others. And the American Left has certainly had its lunatic fringe: animal liberation and environmental liberation groups, groups like the Weathermen Underground and Antifa, various radical Marxist groups, radical anarchist organizations like Black Bloc and the unclassifiable street agitators who spent a good chunk of last year committing mass acts of arson and vandalism in a few dozen cities allegedly on behalf of BLM but not that they recognized them. You would love to harp on the anti-evolution types and the slackjawed locals who overtook the Capitol on January 6th, but I will raise you the mass destruction/anarchy in cities like Minneapolis (over 1500 buildings damaged or destroyed by valid press reports), Portland and Seattle. An issue like abortion is complicated and not reduced to a few facile slogans, and, yes, may be influenced by the religious beliefs of those who oppose it. Some of those who oppose it are quite literate, educated and intelligent people, as you'd see if you read religious journals like "First Things," which, in its most recent issue, had a fairly lengthy critique of Roe v. Wade. On the other hand, there are now more than a few self-proclaimed Marxists on the Left, and Marxism is surely, along with fascism, the most antidemocratic, misguided ideology to gain ascendancy in the 20th century. Likewise, the modern American Left seems obsessed with a weird kind of social reengineering that has never been seen in any human society in recorded history, as with its bizarre gender politics. When you have mainstream members of the Left pushing for gender reassignments for minors when this really is not a settled area medically and treating anyone who disagrees like some kind of Dark Ages superstitious peasant, well, you can understand the pushback. The Left will claim the civil rights movement for itself, when all of the major civil rights legislation was passed with bipartisan support (e.g., the Civil Rights Act of 1964) with opposition from the Dixiecrat fringe, who, at that time anyway, were Democrats. At the moment, there are more than a fair share of Democrats who represent the radical fringe rather well, including obvious targets like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Rashida Tlaib, who are surely more embarrassing than just about any other figures on the Right. My point is this: the "American Right" is a complex thing and not everyone lumped in that group even agrees with all of the other members' positions. Do you think a Libertarian is anti-evolution or abortion? Do you think a Trump conspiracy theorist really cares about the free market? Do you think a Catholic or Jewish conservative has anything in common with an alt-right nationalist? Do you think a pocketbook conservative really cares for the neocons' foreign agenda? See, REALITY IS COMPLICATED. And, therefore, it deserves a more honest portrayal than the comic-book version that exists in most American media that is leftist in orientation. Glad to see at least some of British television is less blinkered but probably because they haven't a horse in this particular race, right?
@julianhermanubis68003 жыл бұрын
@@kinggenderman1874 Anyone who says the Left doesn't hate has never watched the Twitter Roman mob in action going after any target that temporarily raises their ire, even if, in some cases, they've been falsely accused.
@julianhermanubis68003 жыл бұрын
@Dennis Feenstra Just admit you didn't understand what I wrote, and I'll have more respect for you. If you had, you might realize the Christian right (and, frankly, there's more than one Christian right) and the neocons are just parts of an overall mosaic of groups that constitute the modern American Right. Views from the Right are hardly homogenous. And, of course, you ignored my lengthy criticisms of the American Left, and have no answers about any of your own skeletons in the closet. I did answer your points, but you're lazy, not very bright and are trying to deflect. Well, in your case, I guess if you repeat a talking point long enough, someone will believe you.

So... you expect them to voluntarily give up and exempt themselves from millions of $ in your tax $ they get from their cronies who got it from subsidies, you expect them to do this _themselves?_ How ironic is it that you act as if _they_ are too clueless to know we can do without governments while waiting for *them* to give _you_ permission to live without them. @choosecarefully4083 жыл бұрын
@@Maples01 Dude, from 2018 through 2019, no less a governing body than the U.S. Congress itself told us that peddling one's influence for a quid pro quo while in office was a conflict of interest SO CRIMINAL, it's even illegal for a president to commit it. It's already illegal to do everything they do. The psychology is that all the loyalty a 4-year-old gives their parents, adults give Central Authority Figures. If no one can grow tf up to see individual corrupt politicians as just that, then nothing really matters. The Constitution isn't a Living Being that will hold them accountable _for_ you.
@Maples013 жыл бұрын
@@choosecarefully408 A revolution is in order, politician was never meant to be a career, they need term limits but you can't expect them to vote it in. Everything they receive is unconstitutional, from their retirement, lifetime salary that increases, health care, etc, the constitution says they may not vote for themselves what the citizen doesn't also get, yet here we are. Until citizens are ready to defend their rights as a whole, we will all continue to be run over and treated like serfs under a standing King!
@choosecarefully4083 жыл бұрын
@@Maples01 Revolution OR legal, non-violent change: either takes mass public support, no? The people in power now aren't any more likely to put their heads in your nooses than they are in their own for-profit prisons. I know a lot of people who say "only revolution." When I deliver my plan for legal, non-violent change, know what happens? They back away from me in terror. So years ago I decided to brave the depths of social psychology to see if there were clues as to why this is. They're there, but you have to read between the lines. The psychology behind subscribing TO the notion of government is in part a fear of adult responsibility & decision-making. People fear that _way more_ than they fear irresponsible violence. In case you think I'm wrong, then tell me: what are you going to do to ensure we don't install _another_ group we'll then be too terrified of to hold accountable? See? If you don't have the balls to stand tf _up_ to mere people in positions of power now, you _sure_ af won't have the courage to not reinstall another group of people to remove adult decision-making from you *after* you depose them.

Maggie Thatcher, Ronald Reagan, Boy George, Charles, "Randy" Andy, and of course, The Queen were all fair game.
