Spituk Monastery hosts an annual festival known as the Spituk Gustor, which is a vibrant and lively celebration. The term "Gustor" translates to "sacrifice of the 29th day" in Tibetan, signifying the removal of evil spirits. This festival is a significant event in the Ladakhi calendar and is celebrated with much enthusiasm and fervor.
The festival spans two days and includes various rituals, ceremonies, masked dances, and performances by the monks. The purpose of these activities is to ward off evil spirits, seek blessings for the community, and commemorate important events in the life of the Buddha.
During the festival, monks wear traditional costumes and colorful masks representing deities, demons, and other characters. The Cham dance, a masked and costumed dance, is a highlight of the celebration. The dance performances tell stories from Buddhist mythology and serve both religious and entertainment purposes.
