Easily Lumix... but I am defiantly a fanboy. Sony's have overheated on me in the past and it really screwed me. Scared for life. That's the biggest advantage of the S52 over the A74. The Fan. The A74 WILL over heat on you at some point. You won't know when or where... it will just happen. The Lumix fan will save your A$$.

I have both cameras, and I must say that A7iv has disappointed me many times, even when set to high temperature settings. 1080p 60fps… no problem… but switch that to 4K 60fps and after 17 minutes it’s running super hot… by 22 minutes it can shut down outdoor wedding ceremony during summer you can kiss 4K recording good bye… 8 minutes maybe. My 2nd shooter on monopod using his A7iv … crying during ceremony and speeches, over heating and shutting down during mid ceremony.

Great video Sam. The S5II seems like a great option in the under $2K market. I've been shooting with the A7IV until battery runs out of juice and never got an overheating warning. I live in Miami FL. Although, setting the "bypass high temp warning menu option" is the first thing I do when I unbox any Sony camera for the first time.

Not only is the S5ii the best bang for your buck, it's over all just a superb camera for filmmakers and photographers, top notch quality through and through. Last year I had to decide between Lumix / Sony / Canon, I went with the S5 for V-log and the stabilization and it has completely changed the game for me, I ended up buying 2 of them, such an insane camera. The S5ii will be my wedding film camera, especially for the gimbal work with that beautiful autofocusing system. Amazing review!

I switched from Panasonic (GH5's) to Sony a year ago (because I wanted decent autofocus and full frame) and I've had the A7iv for most of that time. Never had an overheating issue but I did set the camera to high temp mode straight away. I've made loads of videos I love with the A7iv, all handheld (except the interview bits). Don't regret the move but if the Lumix S5ii had been available when I made the switch I may have stayed with Panasonic. Too late now though. Too heavily into Sony with an A1 on the way. Another great video Sam. Thanks & keep em coming :-).

I have both but concerning the colours me and m photographer buddies find we always have to dial back the greens on the S series (a lot sometimes) Edit: i find some parts of this video slightly biased. As I own both cameras, the overheating on the Sony is a myth. I’ve used it all summer in scorching heat and humidity without a single overheating issue. I once forgot it in my tightly sealed sling bag still recording, went to see a movie and pulled it out of the oven-like bag still running. It’s a simple menu setting. And so far the AF on the Sony is still more reliable and has the extremely good point tracking feature that is immensely useful in hybrid shooting. I love my S5 mark I and ii, but credit where it’s due. Also, the A7iv is awesome for photos. Not saying the S5 ii isn’t good, but the extra pixels do show (also in video). And the Sony does have higher bitrates available (eg 400 mbps in all Intra). It does show in scenes with a lot of movements or particles (but maybe not on KZbin). That said, if video is your mainstay, the S5 mark ii (I’d wait for the IIx) is better because of its tools and better value as well. However, lens selection is what brought me to go Sony in addition to my s5s.

Enjoyed the video. Have owned Panasonic cameras in the past and if the S5ii came out a year or so ago I probably would have bought it. Having said that, I have owned the Sony A7IV since release and not once has it overheated on me. The time that your camera took to overheat doesn't sound right at all unless if maybe you never changed your heat setting limit to high. It's the first thing I changed when I got the camera and it's been great in that sense.
@avarmadillo
@avarmadillo Жыл бұрын
You're right. That's probably what happened. I have a Sony A7iv, set on high, and has not overheated, but I bought it in December 2022, and it hasn't had the Texas summer heat treatment. Plus, I'm sick of shooting only in 16x9. I want all those Panasonic assist features for video, features like waveforms, spot meter, shutter angle, V-log, vector scope, etc; features that don't even seem to be on Sony's radar all these years. Plus, the S5 is built so, so, so much better than the Sony.
@branisulek3628
@branisulek3628 Жыл бұрын
@@avarmadillo Majority of issues you are mentioning are fixable by using an external monitor with all professional tools at your hand on the much better and bigger screen than the integrated one. Shutter angle is just an interpretation of time in the constant manner regardless of the aperture setting and doing it in your mind becomes a second nature once you get used to this workflow.

What needs to be said and said STRONGLY is that Panasonic / Lumix are a tremendous team of people who listen, improve and are easy to contact. The issues I have with all Sony , from the big ones to little ones is that theres a massive political divide in the company and they're great at new products but hard to get a human to talk to. If the product is good , remember the service and aftercare is wonderful.

I'm not a Sony shooter but I hear this criticism enough that it makes me wary of switching (which I've strongly considered). Not enough support, which does not pair well with their less durable bodies. I hear Panasonic has great service, but I wouldn't know as I've never needed it because their cameras are built like tanks :)

So you're saying it took 5 years for the message to be delivered to them? People have been complaining about the focus in their cameras since 2018 when the A7III came out. I think it's a bit of a stretch to say "they listen". I think it was more, they were forced to change or they would go out of business b/c they are the lowest market share of all camera producers out there.

Just an FYI, the a 7IV has two overheat settings. The default setting will shut the camera down just looking at the menus for a few minutes, the other can record video for hours. It’s a known issue, lots of big KZbins shoot with the A7IV for their main YT camera, like Gerald Undone for example.
@elmachomen
@elmachomen Жыл бұрын
I do believe like you mention that you can extract more performance out of the A7IV, but I'm pretty sure that Gerald Undone is using AI's as his A) camera and the A7IV as B). But in reality it doesn't matter, the fact is that you can use either camera today if you know what you're doing and work around their limitations, if anything makes me happy about the whole situation is that Panasonic has listened and is now back in the game. This is great news for everybody, if they keep offering the tools they're offering with that aggressive pricing strategy it'll force other manufacturers to start bringing more to the table because now, they can't use that "oh but Panasonic has terrible AF" excuse any longer. It's great news for the industry and for ourselves :)

Awesome video Sam! Love the Lumix cameras, got the S5 II as my second cam! I would like to say with the over heating, it's not that big of an issue anymore as long as you know what precautions to take. One being the thermal setting on High & Two keeping the back screen open. I've been using the A7 IV for all my weddings in 2023 and it's not over heated once. One wedding in July 2023 was in a conservatory and outside was already 40C. Also, the S5 Mark I not having a cooling fan is one of the reasons why it was a nonstarter for me. nobody's talking about the fact that LOG is a compressed format that tries to squish more dynamic range into same bandwidth (same bitrate video) - So there are bound to be trade-offs, like noise, less color resolution, etc compared to if you just recorded in standard profile and used ALL bandwidth to encode just those colors! With 10-bit log footage I can see that some guys manage to eek out a decently colorful image, but with most it will be inferior for clarity of colors, subtle nuances of color (color tone resolution), etc - the only plus is retained dynamic range

Yeah, you nailed the point. I switched from Sony to Fuji because of overheating issues - IN THE STUDIO. The A1 could not record more than about 25min of 8k. The Fuji X-H2 does 2 hours with no problem, and the qualitiy is about 98% there. Almost Nobody talks about that! Just got the Lumix as well to have at least one fullframe cam. Great review!

If you go into the settings menu on the Sony A7IV, you can switch on the high setting so the camera won't shut off and keep on recording! You could do the same thing on the A7III, but it did have a 30 minutes record limit. It is still pretty awesome that the S5ii works straight out of the box!!

I'm a Lumix fan, I have Lumix cameras. But, my friends have Sony A7IV cameras, without overheating problem. We are often working together, and they haven't got overheating problems. A7IV an excellent camera for video too. A7IV battery better. In low light situations the Lumix S5IIX extremly good, and the af is working well in low light too. After some month, I know how the S5IIx af working, and it's great and logical. I watched some tests that S5II af not good for events, weddings, when there are lot's of people. But tell the truth in this situations , if you are know how the Lumix af is working, the camera give you a lot's of help in this situations, and great for weddings, and everything.I think both camera are great, and I recommended both of them for video, or stills.

I have the a7iv, filmed a wedding with it in the hot summer and it didn't overheat. It was uncomfortably hot but didn't stop. That being said, I'll buy an s5ii to pair with it. The Sony will be primary for stills, the Panny primary for video, because I'm constantly anxious about the heat. It will still be cheaper than an a7rv even with a nice lens (the a7siii doesn't have enough megapixels for my needs) and I much prefer the APSC crop instead of pixel binning in 60p which is still cropped lmao.

I know this is an older video now, but I just shot a short film in Sweden with the S5 II, in the middle of summer... and a lot of it was in 4k 60 or 6K open gate, and I never even thought about the overheating thing... and yeah I know people are going to say "Yeah but Sweden is cold" - well, it wasn't that day, the sun never sets and it was like 28° air temperature the whole time... I'd have been livid if a $5000 Sony set up (camera and lens) failed, which it sounds like it would have.

Just stumbled on your channel and dig your content. But saying the Sony isn’t capable of being a professional camera is a mistake. I work for a Fortune 500 company tasked with filming the President of the company. I elect to use my own gear and have been filming long form content for him with an A7III and then the A7IV when I upgrade. I’m literally a video professional shooting 4k 10bit with the A7IV without any issue. Day one I switched the temp setting to high and have never had my camera shut off on me. Not once. Keep up the good work though! Really enjoyed your video overall.

I bought a used Sony a7iv, almost new, on Amazon a month ago for about the price of an s5ii. I use the camera only for hobby purposes, to make videos of my children, etc. I can still return it to Amazon, but I am unsure. The Sony is better in terms of video quality in low light conditions. What I also gather from other reviews is that the a7IV produces much less noise than the s5ii when shooting at high ISO values in log profile. Additionally, the Sony can use phase detection at 120fps while the Panasonic switches to contrast based. The Sony is sharper in 4k both in full frame and cropped 60fps. Yes, the colors from the s5ii look nicer, but you can use Phantom LUTs for that with Sony. If I decide to switch to the s5ii, it will be mainly for the IBIS.

Sam hey, before I watch your video I already know the A7IV is a superior camera but you are going to spend more. That does not mean at all the S5ii is not a good camera because it is a VERY GOOD camera especially for video (nice to see Panasonic is crawling its way back in the video area, who know they might become KING again - an updated better version S5ii is scheduled for release this year) and in terms of the price I am quite sure the S5ii beats down all cameras in it class in terms of price and the lens cost less than Sony full-frame lenses. I think a good comparison would vs FUJI if you have not done that yet. Nice JOB!!!

This is an honest review I soon found out myself, Always this one question how long can I film until it fails me? And then it turns out with the Sony A7IV you don't know when, but it will definitely fail even with the dust caps open! And then my second question, how long after overheating is it ready again! I've been lucky enough to be mistrustful and not, like my Nikon, stuck with a bunch of lenses and cameras that no one wants anymore. I'm definitely going for the Panasonic.

For me the choice is easy s5ii. It's $500 cheaper, does everything I want and more. Why spend $500 to lose a ton of features and gain a little bit performance here and there? Sony has the better glass hands down.. for photography. Panasonic tunes all their lenses for video and they are great for the money when you consider the whole set of 1.8 primes is designed to match look for visual cohesion in your film, share filter size, weight, and proportions for seemless swapping on a gimbal or rig. All their lenses are weather sealed too. Sony a7iv is capable of better IQ, but in video, sharper isn't actually always better (or even in photos for that matter). The types of shooting that benefit better sharpness like landscape and product photography - you can just do high res mode on the s5ii. Maybe for stuff like sports, macro, and wildlife the Sony has the advantage. The s5ii is just an insane value because Panasonic just took every customer suggestion and threw it in. Still, I don't think Sony has much to worry about thanks to switching cost. People stick to the brand they know which is the only thing keeping Canon on top right now. Bottom line: the a7iv is an incredible camera but thanks to Panasonic, it's not a great value at $2500 anymore. I think to stay competitive, they're really going to want to drop it to $2200 at least.

I agree for most things, however Panasonic has excellent lenses for photography, I have both systems and while I like some of my GM lenses, I prefer the rendering of the few Panasonic S Pro lenses I have. And not sure about better IQ/sharpness in video, because the 6K on the S5 II looks very sharp. Even in 4K on my S5 if I increase the sharpening in camera, the footage looks similar to my A7IV.

Cracking video as per @sam holland 🙏🏻 You have championed the S5 for a long time and I was always tempted but put off by the af. Think I’ll go for the X version - looks like a beast. Also, to all the Sony fanboys whining - Sam did say it’s “just my opinion” which he’s entitled to. He hasn’t hid his love for the S5 so why change now? I enjoy Gerald Undone and Matti Haapoja etc, but whether they admit it or not, they are Sony biased. In fact most of KZbin is, based on Sonys very shrewd marketing approach / KZbinr relationship building. I find Sam’s approach refreshing honestly. Panasonic has clearly recognized his loyalty and love for their camera, thus rewarding him with an invite / to review. He’s certainly turned me onto the camera and I’ll be buying one purely based on his championing it. If you love your Sony, great, if it doesn’t overheat on you, great. But literally Sony 7IV owners on this thread admitted to it overheating. It’s a fact it can do so. One of my other fave KZbinrs is @josh Sattin. Who loved the A7IV but admitted it overheated on him, too. Peace and love to you all. Whatever camera you use, what a great time to be a creator!

I have never shot more then an hour without stopping, but an hour is far more then 16 min you got. The only thing I did is, to set the overheating temp warning to high. This tells me that either, the quality control of Sony cameras is terrible, or you have that setting on low, and Sony is veeery conservative about their operating temps.
