I'd be a lot more willing to use motion if it didn't disable the stick's vertical camera control. My brain seems wired toward "Use the stick for large adjustments and motion for fine aim", but since an entire axis of motion is disabled when motion is enabled that isn't possible.

As a Splatuber that uses sticks due to having migraines, I can't tell you how many times somebody complained about me using them in a live chat. Also ya I know other peeps already said this but despite this being a heated argument your voice and overall vibe is so calming! Amazing work with this video :0

I use stick controls because I have so much trouble playing with motion controls. I'm really bad. I know already that motions are way better because you have more control with your aiming, but we shouldn't shame players for what controls they're comfortable with

as a pc player tho, motion controls are pretty transferable to mouse aim, so I don't necessarily agree about skill comparability, but yeah I generally agree with most of the stuff you say. On the bright side tho, it kinda says something that the most controversial issue in the splatoon community is something stupid like this rather than the fucking insane (and sometimes illegal) controversies that go on in other competitive communities (looking at you smash)

I can keep up enough on sticks with my friends that play motion and that's all I need. I love watching gameplay of people using motions, but they're not for me. There's weapons that allow me to play well enough on sticks and I'm still having fun. That's all that matters right?

As someone who used stick controls for 4 years and switched to motion about half a year before Splatoon 3, I will say that they both have up and down sides, mainly that it's hard to go back to sticks when you get used to motion controls but sticks definitely make you slower in terms of reaction time

It's honestly just nice to see a video not immediately telling stick players they'll never be good... All the discourse is why I haven't tried making Splatoon content involving my own gameplay.

So, the correct answer, is to use BOTH. The motion controls provide superior aim steadying, and the stick, when set to max sensitivity, allows you to quickly turn around, and not get caught unawares. Although, it would all be trash, if Nintendo added mouse and keyboard connectivity to the game.

There is one other thing missed. Not everyone has the ability to move there wrists for motion. I had to use stick when i was in a cast. The game can cause me pain if i played to long now as well. Motions great, but sticks are still a valid option for a lot if players. Yes its technically slower, but if the player cant physically do it, they still have an option to play. I will speak motions praises, but I won't harass stick players as I understand motion 1, takes time to learn, 2 is not possible for folks with hand and wrist injuries and conditions.

As someone whose *only* shooters have been Splatoon and more recently Garden Warfare, I prefer motion. Started on sticks in 1 but eventually switched to motion either before 2 released or soon after, and have been using it ever since. Obviously if sticks feels better for you that's ok, but I personally can not play well like that. Now that I think of it, I actually do pretty fine in gw without motion. Maybe it's because it's a bit slower paced and requires less quick aim compared to Splatoon

I go with thumb sticks, Motion is probably better generally, but I personally have very shaky hands, and a tendency to jitter substantially in moments of stress or excitement. So motion is basically the worst possible thing for me.

I just finished playing Katana Zero and you playing the OST at the start surprised me :O i like motion controls because I can flick that way and also because I can easier press jump while still being able to turn / aim. I wish the nintendo pro controller had like back buttons like the steam deck does (new steam controller please valve) It's understandable to use stick but we should just stop arguing, nintendo ain't gonna make better control options for either of us xD they improved the motion feeling but you still have limited motion options compared to e.g. overwatch (not that the motion is better there, but you have more options)

I've been using the Y reset trick for years! once I learned I could do that, I felt like I unlocked hidden information lol. but yeah, though I've given motion a few tries, I've essentially always preferred the sticks- maybe one day we'll be given more stick options in the future but ah well. :'D also a side note, idk if it's the same with motion but something I noticed is that if you're turning the camera while standing still, it moves much faster than if you're turning it while moving your character. it can be a bit confusing sometimes so I've been wondering why they decided to have it that way

I can honestly see both sides of the argument, because when I started playing Splatoon back in 2019, I couldn't stand motion controls. Blame the Wii for that chip on my shoulder. 4 months later, Chaos versus order occurs, and that's when I finally push myself to get used to it. Now that I'm there, I find it hard to go back. But I also agree with the video: this argument is incredibly stupid. Let people play how they want to play, and stop being a bunch of gatekeeping elitists! We all came here to have fun! Stop raining on people's parade.

2:50 Oh, really interesting, I never thought about it. Now I'm listening. 3:58 I AGREE WITH THIS 100% I hate the concept of aim assist, as it feels like cheating. I prefer to be a bad player forever with me and my stick control stubborness, but EACH SPLAT I made with my aim, IS MY ACHIEVMENT and it feels so cool. .... Sorry for this rant of mine. 4:58 I want to say something. I play with stick controls in splatoon, because I'm stubborn. I play motion controls on every other shooter game I have on the switch and I find it really cool on those.... I dislike the motion controls in splatoon, but not for the motion, but for it forcing you to not use the Y axis on the stick aim... I will elaborate this later.... however, I can agree that in the pure motion part, thats true. I just wish this game had more indept options... but nintendo likes to force everyone to be simple and to be the same. 6:03 I agree with this tip and I just learned that recently... I wish the game would teach you that, because I played this game and splatoon 2 game for 2 years without knowing that. Its so useful for a 180 degree turn to see your back or to run away that way. 7:59 I totally agree with you. People finds a way to play that they like and really enjoy, and we shouldn't be telling them what not to do just because "it isn't the best" or "it isn't the meta". Me for example, stick controls, Vanilla sploosh main, I use 3 main abilities on sub weapon save so I can throw more curling bombs... That itself sounds really stupid as hell in meta talking... but I don't care and I like to play the game this way. If I didn't play this way, then I wouldn't be playing this game anymore... my sploosh and my precious curling bombs are just that good to me. 8:30 lmao XD, that was just so funny to me XD. 9:52 I agree with this, and I always tell people this. So... now my long opinion will begin (hopefully not that long). First, I am a stick control user. Second, I always said I have a bad aim, and I don't pressume to be better than others. Third, I always recomend new people to use motion controls, and I always say that is like having a mouse presicion but on the Nintendo switch, which is huge and a really cool feature. Fourth, I always say that people should play the way they can play it and the way the can have fun with this game; also to consider that some people have shaky hands and dissabilities that prevents them from playing with motion controls... I feel so bad for them; but if they have fun with stick, then it is really cool. So, if I praise motion controls so much, why do I play with stick controls? Simple, I don't like that you cannot aim up and down with the stick when you have the motion control activated. I know, people tells me I'm stupid because of this, but I dislike not having that option. Motions controls are cool for me in other games, because on other games they allow you to move your vertical axis with the stick, and also you have a lot more option for tweaking both the motion and the stick aim (as in other games, aim is a combination of these two). - A counter to my point of motion controls needing to have a Y axis; this game in average you need to move mostly on the X view axis and not the Y axis, so the Y axis isn't really that needed (it is a good point... I dislike the idea of less options, but this is fair enough. I wonder if maybe splatoon 3 maps are flat because of that X philosophy). At first, I was angry, I was angry because I though "oh man, this game is so perfect and the motion control is so innovative but they ruined it because of the Y axis". So I played splatoon with sticks, and other games with motions (doom 2016, doom ethernal, Borderlands 1 and 2, etc). After thinking it for 2 years, I then got a reason why Nintendo did this; This is my theory (it will take many paragraphs, sorry about that): People who are new to splatoon and likes the game, have a high chance they aren't people who plays a shooter game on consoles. So, these new people will have a harder time to adapt to how you aim in a game; at the same time, it is a perfect opportunity to teach them a new method of aiming, without any previous conceptions of previous games, so they are willing learners (and won't complain about stuff not being their way, as they don't have a way to do things yet). Veteran console players like me, who played first person shooters like the Halo series, the Call of duty series, etc, will know how to aim properly with stick controls. We are used to it. If you add motion controls to it, it is just like a fine tuning aim that really complements our aim as a whole, like a mouse, and we can use both stick and motions at the same time (I aim like this in doom). This will vary from player to player, but veteran first person shooters on console people will not have problems using motion controls like that. HOWEVER, What about new people? (thats always the main target of nintendo). Think of people who have never touched an FPS on a console before. Then try to put a scheme like I mentioned earlier; you say "with the left stick you move, with the right stick you aim, with the motion controls you aim and also tune aiming for precise shots". I know it sounds dumb and easy for us, but for that new player, it is like too much to handle mentally. If you lend them the control, it is like they have 2 modes of aiming at the same time, and ones controls the other one without they controlling it exactly, and it feels like a conflicting scheme, or like those 2 ways are just too much for it. Also, maybe if someone doesn't know how to use it, and just handles that control scheme, maybe they try to aim positioning with motions, and then try to aim precisely at the last part with the stick.... that sounds really counterintuitive, but it is a potential new player who doesn't know nor have previous experience; then they will say aim sucks and leave. It would be too complex for the majority of people who bought a switch and it is their first console and they haven't played another fps game (I bet, that is like a really considerable percentage of splatoon players). Now, How to solve this problem elegantly? (or at least this is the way I think Nintendo thought about it). Simple, we force people to not think of the right stick as "aiming" stick, but rather just like a "camera rotating" stick. So the scheme is: left stick you move, right stick you rotate, motions controls you aim. This way it is simple, easy to learn, and newbe proof (kinda). The success of splatoon, it is that it is accessible to many people, and don't need to have a huge experience in gaming to have fun on this game. This is a great way of why Nintendo is sometimes successful because they think outside the box and outside the norms set by other companies on the same field; they just do their own thing. And I appreciate Nintendo for always striving to do their games fun, accessible, enjoyable and a really cool place to be..... even if it hurts me that the cost of that was the Y axis on the motion control right stick ;-;... I now understand that was important. Anyways, I wish there were advanced options, maybe like if you select the scheme, you could press a button and it displayed more advanced options, tunings, and to allow or disallow the Y axis when you use motion controls. If splatoon motion controls scheme had a Y axis aim, I would use motion controls 100% of the time. Anyways... sorry for the long text. And also sorry for the many gramatical mistakes I made here, as english isn't my first language and I am still learning how to speak and write it correctly. This was a really good and enjoyable video, and definitely an unapreciated channel and also an undiscovered video that is really good. Keep the good work up :)

As someone whose first shooter was splatoon and grew playing almost exclusively with Wii games Motion just felt really intuitive and easy to use from the beginning. I was never once tempted to switch to stick controls, and they overall just feel really cumbersome and sluggish. Now, I won't say anything to you if you use sticks. that's your choice, and I have no say in that. I will, however, judge you silently and not invite you to my birthday party.

This! Nobody ever talks about how underdeveloped stick controls are for nintendo games! It's never even a fair fight to begin with. Also, there's another game on switch that has just as good motion controls as Splatoon, and that's Metroid Prime Remastered. Funnily enough, Metroid Prime on switch also suffers from underdeveloped stick controls, but it's less noticable since the lock on mechanic is integral to the combat and there's a fair amount of bullet magnetism
