So I and some others in the Splatoon TO Guild met up when it was released to both read the provided documentation from nintendo and messing around with the UI ourselves. Because youre registering for events from your actual nintendo account, TOs will see the players normal IGN with discriminators as part of the team, even if they use an alias in game, making verification significantly easier. The only thing that will have the alias shown is the battle replay that gets uploaded automatically once each game has finished. The way that seeding works would need to be changed, as it stands the tournament manager makes seed 1 fight seed 2, seed 3 fights seed 4, etc.

As long as changes can be made to seeding manually and the automatic seeding is predictable, there's a workaround, so that's not the absolute top priority, but yeah they really did make the day 1 mistake on seeding, huh. I literally have a video on exactly that

right now it seems like they wanted to release it as a minimum viable product for running a koshien event, which it nails (single elim, random maps, bad seeding tools, one mode) , and hopefully we can create things other than koshienlikes in the future with such ease, which seems to be their intention

The fact that they're even making this at least puts a slightly more positive potential spin on the tournament guidelines they put out a little while back. Was this actually less "Nintendo hates grassroots / their comp scenes" and more "Nintendo is making the first steps to genuinely support competitve - Albeit as safely as possible or in an official approval system under it's own very specific anti-brand-risk rules"? That seems unreasonably optimistic given their track record, but I guess it's not ENTIRELY impossible...

It's too early to tell but the fact that they are at least willing to do something beyond just dropping guidelines with vague restrictions is at least a good thing. And with Nintendo at least willing to follow up on the guidelines with the “getting a license is easy” thing then I hope that's a decent sign too.

Moon Channel has a great video about the new regulations (tl;dr not as bad as people say but there are some weird limitations) and this effort put into an integrated tournament mode (this is just the beta, double elim and Swiss are confirmed iirc) gives me hope that Nintendo is actually trying to properly recognize competitive scenes while being very careful about it

So Gems hopes at first were so low, he could find diamond blocks. I honestly hope they work on it more; if this is what Nintendo meant by wanting to hold the cards, this is the best outcome: working with us to implement a standardized tourney setup so everyone can be recognized OUTSIDE of the tournament racket. I love how you guys grind that ink, so I hope you all have an opportunity to be recognized for your talents and maybe even get eSports back into the mainstream. I would argue that the 512 tourney limit is not only to encourage the Nintendo affiliated tournaments to utilize this app but to gauge what tourney sizes are like; maybe 200 and 300 were just numbers they threw to test the waters, rather than some draconian rule they made. We will have to see what happens with this app and what Nintendo does with TO relations, but I am hopeful.

9:07 I see this as an upside. If the current process tests the maturity and resourcefulness of competitors, then it lets in people who are responsible enough to handle the logistics of making a tournament run smoothly. I want the Splatoon scene to grow, but the security of players comes first and these tools must be used responsibly to ensure that.

I don’t doubt that there are other things that could crop up in terms of not wanting nintendo to see certain parts of how some tournaments are run, but I at least don’t think we’ll have an equivalent issue like with slippi, as no one is running splat tournaments with non official hardware and/or mods. Or if they are, they’re small enough for them to not be known such to get Nintendo’s attention nor will they be going through this app 😂

Here's a concept for a video, how can a team hold an effective tryout session when looking for new players? What can a team do to figure out whether or not a tryout will get along with the team as well as see if the tryout is at a level similar to the existing team?

I think a benefit of nintendo having the data for the tourneys would be that they know what is being run on a large scale so hopefully the patches could actually tackle problem weapons

Could it be that nintendo would want to use this to host their own online tournaments ? The format options, especially the semis and finals being separated make me think that might be what is planned. Kinda like some of the open online mario kart 8 dx tournaments on the game's built in 'tournament' function.
