I think Letterman got mostly people that he dug to do his show. He had Captain Beefheart, Tom Waits, Warren Zevon, Norm Macdonald, and Hunter Thompson on several times. The one I'd like to ask him about, though, is when Alice in Chains did the show. At the end he shakes Layne's hand and one of them pulls the other back for a few seconds. This song which I love and resonate with reminds me of one of my sabbaticals staying with my mentor and my father's best friend Richard Provensen and his wonderful family. Provensen had the greatest forest gated in relaxing mini-mansion so to speak, a very nice and livable place you know and more importantly family friends we'd made a priority to travel to California to see every year for all of my youth and are still close with, but the point is that Provensen the rock and roll salesman one of the greatest car salesman and experts ever, at the time very successfully selling Audi's, told me that he didn't know what was going to happen but one fantasy close to his heart was a nice but nicely remote house on the outskirts of a community in the 'desert' of the American Southwest where we Nelsons and Provensens would vacation at times, often in Moab, Utah but many other places Sedona and Santa Fe being mere examples; not to leave the Booth's out as they vacationed with us, also; as did the Provensen's. But it was then in this forest garden sanctuary when R. Provensen told me of his dream of being an elder prophet connected with the great, powerful and enlightened sky spirit in the desert where such visions come, of his peyote flight, that I knew he was a great and noble being and the prophet-father-mentor meant for me; and he was. He's actually retired rather comfortably and socially in California artistically creating an educational Alphabet book, they're a family of artists, and I think it's a work of educational artistry ordained by God. The bones get maybe a little old but American industry never stops; American people want to work, and it's mismanagement, bureaucracy, and nonsensical barriers and micro-management artificial problems not a lack of industry that keep so many Americans from getting in the work ranks or having the contributions they make to society counted and compensated. Like JFK said, we need full employment as a goal, not a nightmare. Just as I went door to door for John Kerry; The Provensen's were extremely generous financial backers of his campaign.

As an aspiring cultural misanthropologist I can totally understand and relate to this song. One aspect of the sentiment of the song which baffles me because the actual expression of the primary meaning of the song (I need and want to be isolated from the rest of humanity) requires him to seek the attention of thousands of people, not just massively marketing the recording across the country, but (horror!) to perform the song, live on stage, being the singular focus of an audience of thousands, who collectively appreciate the theme and sentiment of of the song, yet made the effort to aggregate and watch and listen with rapt attention to the one singular individual expressing explicitly and unequivocally his desire for exactly the opposite. I don't know if this is an example of the "tortured artist" who must suffer for the sake of his art, but if it is, that's like musical martyrdom, in my opinion. Damn. I still really miss the man. God rest his soul.

I don't call Warren a genius because that's become an overused word on people undeserving even though he really is a true genius but I call him" Gifted" because I believe in God so did Warren and made his peace with Jesus I believe true gifts come from God and not only was he gifted to be able to take the pain and anguish of his soul which he used scathing wit to deal with it to keep from completely cracking up but it didn't shield him from the hell he endured but helped him recover many times and he not only had a gift to translate that ito song and music but he had another gift to perform It and put it in recording that we are richer for,ive been a singer songwriter and studio musician for 36 years with Warner Bros and I had the distinct pleasure of knowing the great talent and human being I think of him daily his atmosphere and music continue to guide me.Thank you Warren for leaving the treasure that we now enjoy.

One of my favourite WZ songs. I was inspired to learn more about Georgia O'Keeffe from this one. Love the driving beat on this one. It ain't sad - it's a celebration.

Warren is a brilliant musical genius - this song and many of his other songs reveal this. While this song seems like a theme song for life in these COVID times, I believe all of Warren"s great songs are ones that give us the chance to "wake up" - period ...until we wake up - and catch a glimpse of the Tao and Advaita Vedanta, we will always be searching. We will always be grasping and rejecting while Peace is staring us in the face!!!

Warren Zevon is like a bizarro Seinfeld in that whatever topic isn’t covered by other songwriters… he does. Dude made a song (album actually) about pandemic life 30 years ago
