You make it look so easy! I suspect it takes lots of practise though.

It honestly is very straightforward! I would suggest giving it a go. Even just for a bit of fun!

@@theincompetentcrew I tried to do a back-splice. Fantastic result, I can hardly believe it. Thanks so much for an excellent teaching video.

Thanks. Well done video. I splice occasionally, so each time seems like I'm doing it for the first time. I have found it helpful to use red, white and blue electrical tape on each strand. I'm an American so by using the red-white-blue color coding on the strands, it's like numbering which strand is to be worked next.

Is that brand new rope? Any tips on old rope? The thimble in my anchor rode has rusted completely away, leaving an eye splice colored reddish brown with rust. I'm ok with cutting the end off instead of unsplicing it if necessary, but even if I do that, the three strands are so stiff that they don't want to untwist. I'm wondering if soaking it in freshwater would help or anything else I could do to make it more flexible for splicing

Yes it is new. we keep a couple of rolls below for what ever our needs be. With our older 3 strand it usually isn't too much of problem. Do your have a marlin spike or fid? I recently had an octoplait/ 8 strand rope spliced to the end of our anchor chain, used maybe 2-3 times. I removed it and wanted to add an eye to the end- I guess using it a few times then drying salty in the anchor locker took its toll and I couldn't get a small marlin spike through it despite what felt like hours of prying. Tried sticking in in rain for a few days, sticking a length in a pot of hot water to help dissolve the salt etc which softened it a bit, but still not enough. It now sits in the bottom of a rope locker. :(

@@theincompetentcrew I do have fids. It's 200 feet of three strand that came with the boat. I have no idea how many years it has spent in saltwater. It'd be a shame to throw it in the trash since it doesn't look worn at all, but I don't trust the rope to chain connection without a metal thimble for the shackle to rub against. I wonder if soaking it in soapy water would help
