Split flap v2 is SO fast⚡️
•••
I decided to run another iteration on the split flap display which included splurging on faster/stronger/much more expensive motors. The housing needed a redesign and the motor is now connected to the drum with the polyurethane belts from my last vid. Finally, I was able to shrink the drum way down because this application only needs numbers and room for 5 or 6 letters.
•••
Finally I can reveal why I’ve been diving so deep into all these no-video displays and what 8 split flap modules sound like side by side by side- check out the full length video for that (link in bio).

Can you put small magnets on the bottom of the characters and the bottom of the cage to reduce bouncing? Alternatively, a mechanical, side-grabbing approach would work if you connected it to the same shaft for timing but this is a bit more mechanically complex than magnets, haha.

The large array shown in the video is located at Frankfurt/Main airport (Germany). The design uses synchronous motors at 50 Hz and a fixed gear ratio. There were quite a number of attempts needed for the final design. But the displays are a bit older than 20 years and still in operation. Actually Fraport don't want to replace them, as these kind of displays are nowadays somewhat unique. The displays features a function, which is not possible with TFTs - if a row is malfunctioning, the latter rows are simply shifted :)
