The ending was a continuation and throwback to "Unbreakable" with Bruce Willis, which is Shyamalan's version of a comic book movie. So we get to see the birth of a villain, as well as a potential new hero.

I think the sharp dive works when this films are now meant to be looked at as a "superhero" film in a way. It is in the Unbreakable universe, which I think looking at it through that lens allows for it to be more ridiculous. That's also what Betty Buckley is trying to explain that he is basically "super". I can see why it would fall off to some but it really brought this movie to another level. I'm so glad you two at least appreciated 80% cause I do agree, it's like Oscar Gold from McAvoy. Even his role as The Beast was so deep and legit insane how crazy he seemed.
@Chillaxes7 жыл бұрын
Ej Moreno that's what I'm thinking. since unbreakable is supposed to be a "realistic " version of the superhero trope I guess this would fit in that category.at least he didn't jump in a vat of radioactive crap at the end or anything lol

I agree 100% with absolutely everything you guys said. I'm glad I wasn't the only one who was onboard for a story following a man with DID, his psychologist who helps him, and a girl who through her experience confronts her abuser, and instead got this derailed syfy shitfest of an ending. It's too bad, this could have bred a positive message about breaking the stigma of mental illness. McAvoy was perfect.

The tie in to Unbreakable was what made the ending great - he didn't have DID after all, it was legitimately a superpower, and set up a villain for the hero to later face, and set up the universe's true idea that powers stem from trauma. It was legitimately one of the few great shyamalan twist endings, where it completely reframes the whole movie and improves it.
@talistheintrovert7 жыл бұрын
Guys this is so damn good, i LOVE THIS REVIEW SO HARD! And I love that you're as in love with McAvoy as I am, he's a god, and one of the most underrated actors at the moment (although he is getting more mainstream because of the X-Men movie).
@staceykucan36867 жыл бұрын
The real twist will come at the end of the second movie! KEVIN IS AN ALTER!!! The other two girls are seeing Casey (so no panic from them) who is the actual original person who split after being abused. She is fighting with a new alter-The Beast who will later fight with the Bruce Willis character in the next movie.
@kincaidrabbmusic7 жыл бұрын
Man, this movie was frustrating as someone with DID. James McAvoy is a great actor, but... It's a defense mechanism, not a violent, psychotic tendency.
@maggiekarabel1236 жыл бұрын
Kincaid Rabb This is so late but do you just lose time by disassociating from reality or do you have alters? My sister-in-law has DID that she developed as a coping mechanism for a traumatic childhood. She rarely disassociates anymore but she’s never had alters. Going to support groups with my brother we rarely meet someone with a family member who actually has alters. They just lose time because they go somewhere else. I’m just curious about your situation. And yes, the only thing “dangerous” about my SIL’s condition is she could get in a car and drive when she’s not really in touch with reality. She’s in no way violent, scary or psychotic.

ooh alternate plot idea: instead of him working at the zoo, we see a flashback of his mother taking him to the zoo while being really awful to him, and an animal jumps up and hits the glass/barrier behind her really loudly (or some other scary thing) and startles her and leaves her visibly shaken, so in the end he turns into the beast because in his mind, it’s the only thing in the world stronger than his mother

Okay but maybe he didn't have to be this crazy beast mode monster person, what if he had been somehow a long lost brother to the main girl, and they were both traumatized in the same way and when he saw her in public he reverted to like inept brother person who kidnapped her (and accidentally two friends) to save her from this shitty situation he knows she's in but she doesn't quite remember him... ensue lots of personalities none of whom help the issue but for some reason they won't let them go until she figures out what's going on... there I fixed it.

Now with the planned "Eastrail Trilogy" as it's apparently called commencing in 2019 with "Glass", the sequel to Split. I do think it's kind of cool to see Shyamalan's vision come to life almost unintentionally or maybe unexpectedly shall I say, almost 20 years after "Unbreakable" premiered. I can't really think of anything quite like it where a movie bomb spawns a unique successful trilogy some 15 years later with a film that no one would have expected to exist in the same universe as the other. It is a little disappointing that this film went from realist psychological thriller to unrealistic superhero thriller towards the end. I'll enjoy seeing how Shyamalan pulls the trilogy together.

Sooo, I frequently feel like quite a moron with incredibly shitty taste due to the fact that I genuinely love M Night’s film “Lady In The Water”. And, that’s without even the slightest hint of irony. I sincerely enjoy it exactly how M Night intended it to be! Normally I can find at least a few other people who are also fans of some of my somewhat more questionable “guilty pleasures”, if you will. But not when it comes to “Lady In The Water”. It really seems to just be me out there. Anyway, this review just reminded me of how simple-minded I can be. Haha. Much love to you two!!! XOXO

My big problem with this movie is that now people are more terrified of those with DID. Lots of people with it had their you get alters afraid because they thought they were supposed to be that mean and scary and they weren't. It was really offensive to lots of systems for portraying it in this light and making it seem this scary and unsafe.
@christmastiger5 жыл бұрын
I was most annoyed in this film by the main girl who was constantly like "Let's not actually fight back" during the times it actually would have helped, on first viewing I was like "yeah maybe I get this tactic" but honestly the other two girls were WAY more proactive about escaping and nothing about that has to do with privilege, just survival instinct. Basically it felt like one of the messages was "if you've been kidnapped just let it happen, they'll let you go once they find out you've been damaged too" like I enjoyed the movie but they would have escaped in the first 10 minutes if they'd just done what the blonde girl said.

I was hesitant to watch yet another M. Night Shayamalan because I am not a fan of his movies. I was so surprised that I did enjoy the acting and cinematography in this film. The director was brilliant in the camera angles of each of the 23 personalities. You could tell who each character was by just looking at the camera angles and mannerisms of James McAvoy. I felt like there was good character development with each character in this film. I also feel that the heroine being the most “damaged” girl was empowering to people that may watch this film. In films, you typically see “victims” being constantly victimized and cowering in a corner rather than being the one person who can get everyone to safety. I was into the movie with the banter and psychological aspects until the “Beast” came out. I do agree that that was too beyond reality, but again this is a M. Night Shyamalan movie so I was not surprised at all. He does these crazy endings and plot twists so I was somewhat expecting something grandiose of this nature. All in all, I think this was a cool movie when the ending brought it all together. I felt like it was similar to a super hero movie and I liked how it seemed to connect with other movies of his. I typically don’t like his movies because they seem to just end with no resolution or typical ending, so him ending this film with other characters that connect to other movies was brilliant in my opinion.

Y'all are wrong. This movie was good from beginning to end. Ya make it sound like "the beast" came from out of no where and ruined the latter half of the movie. They were talking about "the beast" from the beginning to the end so you really should have been expecting it. It's as if you didn't like it because it wasn't absolutely realistic. It's an M. Night Shyamalan movie, of course it going to incorporate sifi, you should've realized that from the get.
