I think any responsible keeper is nervous the first few times - wanting to do things right for the benefit of the bees & to avoid losses. You’ve got this!

Everyone has different practices. If you’re not in a residential area, and if you’re not focused on excess honey production, I don’t have issue with your approach. I will say, however, that after the first time around, doing splits isn’t very hard or labor intensive. It’s just the nerves of doing it the first time and learning the initial tactic.
