Elm is the moped of hardwoods! Burns okay, but you have to fight with it sometimes to get it to go, and you don’t really want your buddies to know that you’re burning it. But it’s that wooden dollar’s problem- if I didn’t like dollars so much I wooden do it!

I love elm for my stove. Here in Scotland where we have millions of standing dead elms due to Dutch Elm Disease we leave them standing where safe till they naturally debark then process them. Once the stove is lit I always switch to elm for a great bed of embers and heat for a long time. It's BTU output is fully 3/4 that of oak and in most charts produces the same BTU value as ash. Just my tuppence worth as a Scottish woodsman. Have a great day.
@dakotakid1447

Standing dead elm is my favorite firewood, I perfer it over ash. You can see them standing from two miles away! Sometimes when i see them when I'm driving down the highway, i just have to look the other way or Id never get anywhere! I have an outdoor central boiler, no need to split it as long as its under 20" diameter and already dry.
@longlowdog

@@dakotakid1447 I always harvest standing dead elm after a period of drying wind and it can generally go straight to this years log pile. Maybe the butt goes to next year's pile but mostly once it has lost its bark it's good to go. Green elm is another story...it is dire. I too drive around weighing up how many loads I could get from each tree I see and never understand folk who site burn or chip s.d.e.

Elm trees grow like weeds in my area. Road ditches are full of them and they mostly seem to die young. Easy cutting but so hard to split. Mostly I buck them and stack the rounds for a year or two (until the bark slips) then split when it is 20 below 0. GNI

Elms are very "tough" trees they resist wind damage and drought and they are also hard to process when done living or sawed down. We have them in "shelter belts" around here (planted 75 years ago) Due to ongoing severe droughts here they are dying. Also hard to saw, semi chisel seems to work a little better; or maybe less sharpening............

Many streets in Iowa city were lined with 70 ft. Tall elms in the early and mid 60's. It was a great time to be a pre teen. The great horned owls lived those trees. It was great falling asleep to those owls hooting at each other. The cicadas would leave their shells on the gnarly bark. And you couldn't get away from all the grey squirrels, they were every where. Very fond memories.

Chris...Elm may be nasty but I don't think there is anything worse than Gum we had in New Jersey. When I was younger and stupid I picked up a truckload of NG from a roadside dump site. I could not understand why everyone watching me cut and load these heavy rounds were laughing. I quickly learned that splitting 24" rounds even with wedges and a 12# sledge were almost impossible. (And it burns like sheiss; all ash and no heat!) Our local Agway was advertising "If our MacKissick Mighty MAC 9hp splitter can't split whatever you can bring in the splitter is yours." I showed up with a round of Gum and as soon as they saw me get it out of my truck they said, "NO GUM!" I said OK but just try. It would not split it! I learned that bark real well and never cut it again!

Boy the time you would save just putting the conveyor under the splitter and letting each log push the previous into. Sure you would have a little more debris in the trailer but you would just dump it on the burn pile after you stack. Trading over handling the wood so that the bark and tiny pieces end up under the splitter, which you have to clean up any way. Faster to dump the trailer vs scrape it up with the tractor. Thanks for the video though!

We have "Chinese Elm" around here (planted domestic trees) very hard when dry, dense, heavy, hard to split with an axe unless very dry or below zero cold weather. Seems similar to ash when burning, perhaps puts out MOre heat.

Yup, it splits hard but burns good.

You shouldn't denigrate elm too much, looked like you handled it just like the $money wood! The Amish know wood!! They all have 12 or 15 kids!! They prize elm for beams over doorways, holds weight without sagging. Maybe make more $ by selling the logs before you cut 'em up for firewood. Just in case, you can't sell many 16in. beams, they should be longer!! Btb, I think it was very nice of you to give your banjo picker the day off! The mariachi music somehow seems right at home in the snowy, icy, frigid woodyard!! Kinda warms things up! Strange that the cats like banjo and guitar, then disappear for the mariachi! Who'da thunk they were music critics/snobs!! - Good to see how you stretched out the elevator so you can slide the wood right on out! A little more practice, you'll get it!!

I split up a bunch of red oak last week (we think it was either "scarlet oak" or some kind of wild hybrid...) that was the nastiest dirtiest splitting oak I've ever seen. It was WORSE than elm. Tough, stringy, HEAVY... just nasty stuff to split. Glad I got that one done for sure.
@InTheWoodyard

@@InTheWoodyard Yeah... My dad is a walking tree identification encyclopedia, and I had him come over to look at it. It made him scratch his head... had to get the books out. "Scarlet Oak" was what looked to be the closest in the books... but it kinda didn't look like that either... so we're thinking it was some kind of wild hybrid or something. But it was just nasty to split.
