Spock's Beard performing live on Rockpalast at the Köln Music Hall in Koln, Germany (Cologne) on April 14, 2000. Full show. Rare appearance by George Pappanastos filling in on bass for Dave Meros (George died of a brain tumor less than a year after this performance).
Neal's reference to having a full hour to play refers to the fact that they'd been opening for Dream Theater on the Metropolis 2000 tour where they only got 45 minutes each night.

I'll admit, this wasn't SB's best performance. Neal's voice wasn't in good shape and the mix wasn't great, but it's a pretty rare show that wasn't on KZbin so I thought I'd upload it.

Neal is an amazing vocalist. He sounds sick or something here. His voice was shot from the beginning. I've seen him perform 3 hours straight and not even sound like this by the end. Hopefully you give him a chance. You'll be amazed!

A gracious audience makes performing while sick less rough - vocalists must make instant choices how to preserve their voice for future shows; if neal was sick at this gig, then high compliments for this enthusiastic performance - working class artists dont get sick time off, and not all bands have talented utility players like George. Years ago, violent food poisoning required me to played piano with right hand while throwing up in a bucket with the other - I have great respect for this show.

yeah, definitely not their best but this show still has it's moments for sure. alan's voice was mixed in way too loud, and he sounds pretty bad. thanks for the upload though, i haven't seen this one yet.

I was fortunate that I grew up in an era where prog rock was readily available...there was even a nightly program from 9-12 called THE INCREDIBLE PROGRESSIVE ROCK CIRCUS in Columbus, Ohio, in the late 60's/early 70's...you can't even find it on Sirius/XM today...thank goodness that You Tube has examples of this and the earlier incarnations of this kind of music available for retrospective viewing...

Are you kidding? Ryo is one of the most talented members of that band. He's a session player with tons of credits on his resume, including huge artists like Phil Collins and Eric Clapton. He probably has the most musical knowledge of anyone in the band, since Neal left. He first joined the band as a Hammond B3 and mellotron specialist, but has since had to cover all of Neal's keyboard parts (which is no easy task). Don't let his goofy stage antics fool you, Ryo Okumoto is crazy talented.

now that youtube is allowing these longer videos, i should upload the show i taped myself. it was just neal and nick doing an acoustic gig in a german pub back in june of 2000. i got about 2 hours worth of footage or so, then the battery died. (in the middle of the light, of all places! damn.) i'm from the US, but i happened to be over there visiting family at the same time they were doing their acoustic tour.

What was the point of having Ryo in the band if Neal was just going to play all the lead parts anyway? It's like, "We know you're an amazing keyboardist, Ryo, but you're gonna just sit in the background anyway."

I found out about them through Kings x one of my fav bands think they were advertised on the same label name is how I spotted spocks beard and thought with a name like that Im gunna have to check em out. Hmmmm I have heard the name of this band before thought id check them out. Kind of interesting not sure what I think? Great musicians no doubt. I could imagine freddy mercury would fit pretty well with this band think a stronger vocalist would lift it this group up a fair notch or to very skilled think Ill give it some time to simmer might grow on me yet.

Neal Morse is fantastic...he did not have his best voice in this performance. Watch any other video. I really hope you get into SB...one of the best, underrated bands out there.

Yeah, Neal's voice is pretty shot, but there are still some great moments. People that are interested in this era of Spock's Beard might want to buy Don't Try This at Home. It has an extra DVD on the making of V, and a CD of some extras, all for under $20. It is one of my favorite performances by them. The quality is not amazing, but the performances are fantastic.
