SPOHR Violin Competition: Sumina Studer | F. Mendelssohn Violin Concerto 1st movement

Sumina Studer and Nicolas Pasquet perform F. Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in e minor with the Academy of Music "Franz Liszt" Weimar at the International Louis Spohr Competition for Young Violinists in Weimar, Germany in November 2016, where Sumina won 2nd prize and prize for best interpretation of a sonata.

Her cadenza is sooo smooth, all other performances ive heard the string swaps (im not a violinist so i dont know the technical terms) are almost staccato. I prefer it like this. My one problem with the piece is that the 2 final phrases should be the climax and powerful, full of tension, ready to be unleashed at the perfect cadence, but here i just dont feel it

The cadenza is supposed to be played ricochet, not legato, but it can be interpreted differently as it is a cadenza. Most people stick with the ricochet bowing that was marked.

Eternalshimo - it is, indeed, "just you" and your KZbin friend. Hahn and Studer are two very different players - different approaches to the tone production and treatment of the piece. Some other people hear the resemblance to Heifetz; some others - to someone else. In fact, she is delivering a pretty nice fluid version of her own. A very gifted violinist.
