yep altho flares generate intense heat and can ignite flammable materials, potentially causing a fire onboard the helicopter. once a person shoots the flare gun inside the helicopter tho. that fire could rapidly spread in the confined space of the aircraft, leading to loss of control and potentially a crash... in this case, BOOMBASTIC 💥🔥💨

The maneuver was intentional (i.e. planned). The camera zoomed in on that point to make it look like he was getting too close to the water. Higher ups watching a screening asked the pilot how low they went to which the pilot responded, "500 feet, sir", ... which was okay with the higher ups.

the ussr would have never made it into germany without the allies help. Probably never even been able to defend their homeland as due to the lend-lease agreement they managed to scrounge up enough bullets (almost for everyone) and tanks also logistics vehicles such as trucks to defend and then retaliate @@philiprice7875

@@philiprice7875 There is Japanese novel Zipang. Japanese destroyer went back to time, just before Battle of Midway. Modern Japanese destroyer tried to avoid the battle and didn't want to change course of war. But american carrier Wasp intercepted them and sent 80 planes to destroy this 'new model of' imperial japanese navy. Cornered modern japanese destroyer destroyed attacking planes and quickly retaliated, sinking Wasp in the process. Problem is after the fight it was really hard to replace depleting ammo and supplies.

I saw this film in the theater when it came out. I wish it would come on TV more often. I rarely see it. I think a remake of it would be great. With today's technology, they could make it look awesome. Even better, would be a twist ending. Have the Aircraft Carrier stop the Pear Harbour Attack. Then return to present day and show the changes that took place. That would be too cool!

The problem is that might not have the results you think it would. Lets say the Nimitz actually stopped the attack, even sank the Japanese Attack Force, all six carriers, then simply left and not stayed in 1941. This does not guarantee a shorter war. If anything it might end up causing the contrary to happen. Americans before Pearl Harbor and the fighting in the Philippines saw the Japanese as "racial inferiors" with buck teeth, coke-bottle glasses and flying in tin planes. A quick victory might wrongly reinforce that view....at least until the 1941 US military (which would have been upgraded after the attack in this new timeline) faced the Japanese in Asia and the South Pacific and ran right into the reality that the Japs didn't just take over most of the area because the Brits, French, and Dutch were all asleep. The Japanese were masters of warfare in their corner of the world with a professional military and navy. If American went into the war with that mentality and ran face-first into the slaughter that would happen, it results might have been a bit more than demoralizing. Might even have turned the public against the war if the casualties were very high. Remember that Pearl Harbor was a rallying cry, a reason for vengeance. A war where we shoot first and then get bloodied? No, not something that would work with a generation raised on cowboy movies where the good guys don't shoot first. History would change but not in a positive way. Certainly the US might eventually win against Japan, or at the least fight a stalemate in the Pacific till Hitler is defeated, then be forced to sign some half-assed peace with Tokyo afterward to keep Russia and Mao's Chinese Communists from turning and taking over Southeast Asia like they tried to do in our timeline. That in turn could end up leading to the Domino Effect happening and the Communists capturing all of Korea, Vietnam and the rest of Indo-China. The only way for this to remain a positive outcome would be for the USS Nimitz to remain in the past and use the modern weapons to finish the job (aka take out Tokyo and Berlin with nukes). Granted they have enough of an arsenal on board with supply the modern weapons for a time, but not fight a long war until the supplies run out. The ammo for the jets can be replaced in the 1940s, but the jet fuel would be limited since they hadn't worked out the formula for it just yet. It can be replicated if someone aboard knows the formula and right mixtures, but that would take time to reproduce. Ditto with the rockets. Still with the nuclear weapons aboard, they could bluff the Japanese and Nazis into thinking they had the ability to finish the job. It would also give the US a technological head-start with the rest of the world once they reverse engineer the technology from the future.

While the story and characters were not the best, this was a wonderful movie for Grumman, USN and aerospace enthusiasts because of the scenes with the combat aircraft of the day. My father worked for Grumman Aerospace for 35 years and was a principal member of the LEM design team, focusing on the landing gear and the creation of the Lunar Surface Sensing Probe (affectionately called the "lunar curb feeler" at our home). The musical score by John Scott is outstanding, and continues to be one of the most under-rated aspects of the film. Fun film fact: During the sequence in which a F-14 engages one of the Japanese Zero fighters, the F-14 pilot had to throttle down to match speed and almost stalled his aircraft- and the seemingly dramatic pull-up recovery about 100 feet above the surface was quite real and captured on film. Excellent movie, and highly underrated. Im thinking the main plot of this movie is that even if time travel were somehow possible, whether by a man made time machine, or in this case an act of Nature/ God via a powerful and in explainable exectromagnetic storm of unknown causes, it would be pretty much impossible to change the past without altering the future. By interfering with the attack on Pearl Harbor, they may have created a different timeline where the USS Nimitz was never built, and perhaps most of the crew members having a different path in life, in other words a Paradox. If in that altered future timeline, if the ship was never built and her crew took different pathways in their lives, then how could the Nimitz and her crew be transported back in time via anomalous electrical storm seemingly out of nowhere , and interfere with and change a major historical event? That is the Paradox.

One of my favorites. This movie was the origin of the idea for Top Gun. The Navy was on board with the whole production. I noticed a few years later the movie Philadelphia Experiment had a similar theme. If you combine the two movies they actually overlap. One scene from that movie shows a portal through time that the sailor is traveling and it's moving. He shuts down the source but the ship materialized some place else. I figured that the Nimitz encountered the same portal. Same time frame. All in all the miniseries The Triangle covers the same territory years later.

They should redo this into a Mini Series where a Carrier from 2024 goes back to Pearl Harbor, destroyed the Japanese Strike Force then stays rather than returning to the future. Not only would it deal with advanced weapons that could win the war, but there are other things that would add a lot of Drama like when the people of 1940's America see the Modern Carrier has non segregated crews and female crew as well as female pilots. And it would also be cool to see what the U.S does with such power. The Carrier wouldn't be useful for long due to the lack of proper fuel and spare parts, but a lot of stuff can be reverse engineered.

I really enjoy this movie. Sadly it was underated and the title remembered as the title of a song by Europe in the 80's. Always wondered it they actually got the fight the Japanese fleet , Undoubtably they would have won but also changed. It would likely be that a number of the crew would disappear due to the change in history. In a way it did. Commander Owens would have used his knowledge to help in WW2. With the knowledge of future he would have lots of oppurtunities to get wealthy. They would have watched over lasky life and career until he got back. Laurel was probably relieved that Charlie would still be alive after 40 years.

I hope one day there's a sequel or a reboot but I will love to see a movie similar to that instead of a modern warship, how about an entire United States along with their modern warfare, technology and civilians got time travel(or Isekai in Japanese) to WW2? It's like a fanfiction where Modern US forces team up with WW2 British, Soviet and their allies against the Axis Powers while carefully altering some events whereas modern civilians were dealing with 1940s civilians as they show them about movies, selfies, social media and other modern stuff in a confuse but hilarious ways.

The change in who dies and who survives alone would echo down through time if they stopped the Japanese attack. People would appear, others disappear on the Nimitz. Imagine if a sailor who would have died at Pearl Harbor goes on to marry a woman who would have otherwise married someone else and was an ancestor of a Nimitz crewmember. That person would erase from existance.

That would present a dilemma for sure. But just imagine the USS Nimitz interceding the Japanese forces, preventing the US from entering the war on such strained circumstances. But then with the actual help of the Nimitz to then steam directly to Europe and Germany to stop the axis from continuing the destruction and murder! With the immediate boost in technology and peace, with the U.S. at totally capable of keeping the peace.

i always wanted them to do a remake of this movie where they actually attacked the Japanese fleet and wiped it out. then have a follow-on TV series that explores the outcome of that action. would Japan have instantly sued for peace since their main fleet was destroyed and America had a new weapon (not knowing the tech to keep the planes and ship going would not be possible for decades to come) that was so devastating? what would have happened in Europe and China if the US stayed out of the war? or at what point would the US enter the war and how that may change history. so many ways you could go with this story line.

You mean like "The Man in the High Castle" (Nazis win WWII) show or "For All Mankind" (Russia wins the Space Race) show? That could be very interesting. Most of the bullets and bombs would use the same or similar technology, so I wouldn't think those would be hard to make (though if modern day requires higher tolerances, that might be an issue). The performance of the gunpowder might be problematic (I honestly don't know). I would think getting the jet fuel right would be the bigger issue. I don't know if the precise performance and makeup of the fuel is recorded anywhere on the ship (being on the Internet doesn't help in this case 🙂). I am interested in what people think the Japanese Empire would do. OT1H, their main fleet would be decimated if not completely destroyed. OTOH, the Japanese military are not know for surrendering (just the opposite in fact). By this time, their declaration of war would have been made (they made it after the attack started, but still in the same day), so there's no backing out of that. They're kind of committed to a course they know they can't win. Of course, since the attack was NOT successful ("America bravely fought off the aggressors!", or some such), the American people might not be as up-in-arms to fight as they were (recall we were very isolationist before the attack). America might NOT get into the war. And *that* would have all kinds of consequences!

i haven't seen the shows you referenced, but all the things you talk about are the things i also wonder about. if the US fleet hadn't been attacked the way it was, how eager would the people have been to line up at the recruiting stations or to go through all the rationing for the next 4 years? or more. just so many possible ways you could look at this whole era.@@christalbot210

@@firerescueratchet559 yes and no. the US did capture a wrecked Zero fighter, rebuilt it and then they found the strengths and weakness of it and used that in future aircraft production to make better fighters to latter dominate the Zeros. but with tech from 1980 (or from present day) you would have to know how so many of the little things are made before you could copy them. if you took an I-Phone back in time with all the plans for the phone and the towers, you still could not reproduce one with the tech of the 40s due to the 1000 little things that would be impossible to produce at that time. you would have to spend years creating all the other things before you could even attempt to make a cell phone. i know my example is like comparing a grape to a watermelon, but after all we are just having a conversation about things we daydream about while we stare at our work wishing we didn't have to work... have a good day.

if you attacked japans fleet in pearl harbor before it got their then the amircans wouldn't have any reason to join ww2 making it that communist's would lose to Germany and Germany would win ww2

The soviets would propably still have won. But it would have been a lot more deaths, and taken a lot longer. The soviets fought so hard, being sent to the eastern front was used as punishment by the nazis. The US just speed up the loss for germany. More likely, the japanese would have stopped their attempts to attack the US and would have focused on the rest of asia first. Maybe they would have helped the germans, by attacking the soviets from behind. Then it could have been a win.

Time travel is always scary. In this one lets say you could stop the attack. Well with out that attack the people would not have gotten behind the war as they did. The US would have never entered WW2 and if they did it would have been at a limited capacity and all of Europe would have been speaking German by 1943 including England as with out US supplies they would have feel long before the US got into the war. With out the lend lease act of 3/4 ton trucks to the Russians they would have never been able to move the way they did and allow their greatest champion to defeat the Germans, the Russian Winter. Those trucks provided the logistical movement they needed to get to the East with everything including a Russian talk factory turn down and everything including the bricks rebuilt on the Eastern side to allow for tank to be built to push on the German's after the winter destroyed them. With out the lend lease program the German's would have taken over Russia at next supper. So much more but that is the rough version.
