Hey Jamacian Snuggie, did you know this was the last Spongbob episoad to air before the Spongbob movie? Yup. Stephan hillenburg wanted the show to end after season 3. So the movie was basically the "grand finale." But Nickelodeon didn't want that, since the show was super popular they wanted to keep it going. So Steohan Hillenburg left the show after the movie was released. Then Nickolodeon produced season 4.

In tea at the treedome, it's shown spongebob was able to last a long time without his water helmet while Patrick wasn't. So, maybe it was a cool and moist day in the treedome and the fact that Patrick took off his helmet not long before sandy noticed the anomalies. Edit: although in a few different later episodes it's shown that spongebob similarly doesn't last long without his water helmet.
