Sleep paralysis is insanely hard to break out of if you are deep enough into it. Often times I’ve struggled just to realize I was in sleep paralysis. It’s a real thing and it can be a real nightmare lol

My ex in high school used to get them & it was incredibly hard for her. Whenever she could wake up, she'd call me crying. Sometimes so hysterically that I couldn't understand what she was saying, I just knew what it was bcz nothing else made her cry. I'd have to stay on the phone with her to help her go back to sleep. She used to be physically & sexually assaulted by her uncle, stepfather, step brothers; so she used to relive those nightmares. We fell asleep watching a movie one afternoon & she had one of those nightmares & she just moaned & cried while sleeping until I finally got her up. I didn't have the heart to ask her what happened in the dream. I respect anyone & everyone who has to endure such a tortuous thing & keep fighting to live happily. I'm not sure I'd be able to endure that. I think I'd give up. She & I are still very close friends & she still has her fight with the terrors of sleep paralysis. My heart & respect goes out to her, you, & anyone that has dealt with this terrible plight

Sleep paralysis usually only happens when someone lucid dreams. They wake up mid dream, and since the brain doesn’t allow you to move while dreaming you wake up unable to move your body. In my experience it usually happens with nightmares, but it can happen with normal dreams as well.
