The British (or technically Canadian) Skink anti-air vehicle has been heavily requested by the War Thunder community for as long as I can remember. Gaijin did finally add it, but despite being a solid SPAA, practically no one plays it.

I tend to use the Bosvark because everyone dives on it to get their free kill, and if I don't suck that day they get obliterated by twin 23mm with 4x the explosive filler as the skink

Skink was literally perfect in my 4.7 lineup with Avenger, Firefly and Churchill VII. Add some CAS (I used Typhoon) and you end up with my favorite low-mid BR lineup. But now they ruined it since there is no tanks at 5.0 in britain...

I think the biggest issue for the skink is the BR. British 5.0-6.0 is a bit barren and a lot of players don't want to play with only one vehicle being the highest in their lineup. Once you get above 6.0 there's just better options to use. It was more usable at 4.7

It should be 3.3 really. It's just an objectively worse Wirbel, which is 3.7.

@@Retrosicotte It's objectively better than the Wirbel though, completely enclosed turret, doesn't die to overpressure, enough hull armour to stop other autocannons, slightly less penetration but with full calibre AP rather than dogwater APCR. It shouldn't be 5.0, I wouldn't put it anywhere past 4.3, but saying its worse than the Wirbel is straight cap.

Point being that it’s too high in BR which we both agree on. I’d love it down at 4.0 for the line up as well but it needs to be useable at the 4.7 lineup at a minimum.

@@roadhigher Armor can't actually stop most other autocannons that use 20mm HVAP or better. All 23mm AP and over can essentially act as if the armor doesn't exist in the first place, and one common plane that I find myself fighting are DO335s. I also find it highly troubling that almost any good German fighter has at least one deployable fuck you button (a bomb), and less will to live than a Japanese pilot at the Battle of Leyte Gulf.

Oh, it deals with planes very well, but people tend to go for other options that match the BR of their lineup like the bosvark, etc. My point being that you'd see it a lot more if it was 4.7

​​​​@@l.h.9747what makes it irrelevant is that the 5.0 br doesn't mesh well with the other tanks at the same stage of the British tank tree. The other vehicles in line with Skink are around 6.0-6.3 br, while most of the tanks just above it are around 4.7. So it's kind of stuck between being too high of a tier for the rest of your lineup, or being under tiered by a whole 1.0 br for the rest of your lineup. Really doesn't help that the Bosvark is just better in practically all aspects besides armor, is researched before the Skink, and .3 br lower.

They had it in a good spot at 4.7 where it had a good line up and then bumped it up to 5.0 because of the Bosvark and now its 1 of 3 vehicles at 5.0 for Britain the other 2 being a seafire and spitfire.

The skink was super good fun at 4.7 honestly, and fit in perfectly with my CH Crocodile, Firefly, Concept 3 and Churchill 7 lineup, now that it’s 5.0 you gotta either Up-BR and entire lineup to use it, or put it in uptiers. It’s not a fault of the tank being bad, or anything like that it’s just the BR change kind of killed it off.

Skink got added a bit too late amidst a whole lot of new SPAA for the UK tree which is why people mainly wanted it. UK was absolutely stuffed for SPAA options with both crusader AAs either being outright bad or just falling off really fast. Even adding Ystervark didn't help much because that thing is less protected than a milk truck and has insanely gimped aiming angles. So yeah, people wanted it in the UK tree specifically to provide at least some levity. And personally I use it a lot, though Bosvark might overtake that.

I think people were expecting it to go in the US tree 'cause it's based off an American tank, but it got put in the British tree 'cause it was designed by Canadian forces. If it got put in the American tech tree, I think you'd see a lot more people play it.

To be fair if it wasn't 5.0 and the Ystervark and Bosvark hadn't been added I think it wouldve been more anticipated. As it is i think it was added in a fairly sparse patch (was it Danger Zone?) where people just focussed on the lack of original content. Besides, Gaijin definitely has it in for us Brit mains. Last BR patch and the refusal to listen to any feedback that might make British Aircraft even slightly better proves that.

The Skink is just a cool vehicle that you can’t see modelled in any other mainstream games that I’m aware of, so I know for me part of the desire to have it in game was to have it modelled and to be able to look at it in game. Like most new vehicles I just test drive it every so often when I’m bored, since I don’t have any desire to take the like 40k RP away from my top tier grind…

@@tigertank1819 Firstly the only one of these that could fill the Skinks gap is the T85E1, which is also an even more open top vehicle then the M16, but it is really the only choice, especially because of its cannons. T77 = M16 with 2 more 50 cals, so meh, 50 cals are only decent around the M16 br, 4.0+ and they are pretty bad, the M16 with 4 50 cals is 2.7, so it would sit at 3.3 - 3.7, definitely does not fill in the Skink gap. T100 MGMC doesn't exist, I am guessing you mean T10E1? Still doesn't change anything, has the same cannons as the Skink, but it only has 2 of them, so it is basically a US Crusader AA at 3.7, although still worse because it is completely open top and a half track because it is on the same chassis as the M16.

The only skink i remember seeing was one i shot at around to 2,5/3km away in my ikv91, it felt like killing an m22, you know you gotta do it, but you really dont want to. Game was pretty much finished, only like 2 guys left on the enemy team and i saw it going full speed across an open field so i did a hail mary... i hit its engine and transmission which brought him to a complete stop... i had to put him out of his misery after that. If that skink ends up seeing this, im sorry little one.

I recall the Skink being requested to counter the Whirbel. It was an amazing AA that could double as a pseudo tank destroyer, and many Allied AA trees had nothing even close to being competitive against it at the tier.

@Spookston I think a part of the issue with the Skink and it's effectiveness has to do with the fact that it's high explosive shells are fragmentation based shells. They're HEF-I (if I remember correctly) so they aren't normal HE shells in the belt, meaning that the damage the shells do to anything is basically totally fudging randomized due to the fact that War Thunder makes fragment-based damage shells work off of something called "real shatter" of the shells. Real Shatter, at least from my understanding of it while screwing around in the damage protection analysis menu makes the number and direction of the fragments of every single shell that impacts a vehicle completely randomized and usually doesn't take into account the explosion from the explosive filler of the shell in the vehicle damage (at least for anything below 30mm in size).

I tried it out recently at 5.0 and 6.0 planes can literally fly faster than it's torrent speed ,and vertical speed meaning you have to make sure you know the plane don't waste your time with it .

There was a pre-production Skink that was armed with Hispanos in place of the Inglis guns it would have gotten (if MacArthur didn't issue a directive for 20x110 to go solely to aircraft). The iteration in game has the 20x110RB firing Polstens. The Hispano guns could be armed with AP Mk. III, essentially a comparable round to PzGr 40. In other nonsensical AA platforms, we did make 4x20mm, and 3x20mm armed CMP Ford F60S trucks with the Polsten gun.

My first kill in the Skink was a Panzer Iv/70, the round velocity is very different from the other SPAA's teaboos would be used to so re-learning how to lead aircraft takes some adjusting, but shruggin off hostile cas who haven't brought decent ground belts is always fun.

Honestly, it looks like a pretty fun vehicle (even tho the magazine is so small). Maybe the BR is slightly too high but if you lower it, the AP would obliterate the tanks. Btw, don't use AP against planes. You'll mainly do crits (at best). HE is the way

I for one was absolutely ecstatic about this addition. Because I was using a 40mm bofors for a 6.7-7.3 lineup and it was the most painful thing ever trying to shoot down me262s with a 40mm. And since it was added, it's my AA vehicle from 5.0 to 7.7 (falcon is 8.0 now for some reason when gepard is also 8.0 which makes no sense) Actually yeah Spookson can you do a video trying to explain why the gepard is the same b.r as the falcon despite it being better is ever aspect? started myself the british tree not long long and noticed early on what a great perk it was to have a solid roof helping you to shield off Cas fire, something nations like Germany and America does not have at that Br, i doubt they are the best but they can pull it off pretty good against cas with their mostly good amor for AA's and being quite fast

Play the German AA halftrack with the 3 15mm autocannons. It's a useful vehicle. Also, it's the same BR as the Panzer IV F2 and and Panzer III M, which means it has a great lineup. [Panzer IV for the W] Edit: Ye... we can get shot through buildings now... and I don't mean the little wooden shacks. There is also a spot on the Japan map where You can shoot trough the rocks as they are not physically there, just visually.

It's a great SPAA, it's a shame it was almost instantly moved to 5.0, it fitted perfectly with the Firefly and Avenger. Now you need to uptier it by a lot to get a decent lineup.

My working theory is that most people who were asking for it were American players who had to play the absolutely terrible M42 and M19A1 but when it got added to the British tree those players didn't wanna grind Britian for it since they just wanted a good AA, not the Skink itself. It kinda makes sense they'd think it'd go in the US tree since the M4A5 is Canadian and also in the US tree

@@seangunn4772 I feel its that and the fact they uptiered it like a week in to 5.0 where the brits just don't have a line up, compared to the solid 4.7 lineup they have, so it lost its purpose basically instantly, which is a shame because the bosvark and ystervarrk are hot trash in comparison due to them being gimped overtired milk trucks. People just went back to using the 20mm crusader aa, while the skink became your aa if your playing in the 6.7 range.

I had always asssumed the Skink would be added to the US tech tree. The twin 40mm bofors aren't as effective as the wirblewind, and the Skink filled that gap.

Skink is one of the best additions to the game imo. Finally, we got a AA vehicle for the mid-tier British tech tree, it's a huge improvement compared to Crusader AA. It lacks armour-piercing capabilities but against the planes, it's a monster and you feel safe under fire. Btw Skink looks very good and futuristic.

You have decent mobility (Good reverse!), pretty good armour and a gun that can pen close to everything and is easy to aim. Top that off with 12° of gun depression. The literal only downside of the tank is the small ready rack and the longer reload you will have to endure afterwards

Bro the C.202 EC is so awesome. It gets 2 .50 cals and 2 german 20mms. .50 cals get like 700 rounds and the 20mms get like 500. That thing got ammo to spare.

i mean it was played the first week it was introduced because it was 4.7 and actually fit into a lineup, and then the German mains cried because their puma spam was being obliterated and the new VK's couldn't outright ignore it flanking them so it was obviously overpowered and needed to be uptiered to 5.0, and being the ONLY 5.0, and also on the upper edge of british lineups because theres only a sinlge 5.3 and a single 5.7 tank, theres literally only 1 BR range to play it at now. it needs to be 4.7 again or even 4.3, its nothing more than an up armored whirbelwind.

tbh, i liked the skink. i used it complementary to my Rooikat 105, and absolutly shredded BR8+ meds and lights (dunno if they all were actually BR8, but those Type16 melted like Butter)

Honesty the greatest advantage of the Skink is that it has a roof. It is amazing just for tanking strafing runs that would destroy or incapacitate all other SPAAs at its BR

7:50 supposedly they patched that bug right now but it happened to me as well when I was driving a Black Prince and I died to an Ostwind 37mm autocannon that "penetrated" the side of my vehicle from a high angle.
