ACACIA PARK HISTORY:
In the late 1910s the Masonic Fraternity of Chicagoland decided to develop cemeteries that would be limited to Masons, members of the Eastern Star and their families. Street Lightfoot was hired to accomplish this because of his cemetery expertise and background in Masonry. Lightfoot developed the Acacia Park Cemetery on Chicago's north side, and the Cedar Park Cemetery on Chicago's far south side for the Masons.
The newspaper of the day trumpeted the news. The announcement came in the January 18, 1925 edition of the Chicago Daily Tribune:
WORLD'S FINEST MAUSOLEUM FOR CHICAGO MASONS
$800,000 Structure to Be in Acacia Cemetery.
Chicago is to have one of the most magnificent mausoleums in the world - a solid marble, concrete and bronze structure - dedicated to Masons and their families. The $800,000 Acacia mausoleum was designed by R.G. Schmidt & Co., of Chicago, who were the architects of Medinah Temple, Medinah Country Club, and other Masonic temples throughout the country.

THIS CHANNEL:
_________________________________________________________
The Angel face you see is the Haserot, named “The Angel of Death Victorious". The stoic angel is seated on the marble gravestone of canning entrepreneur Francis Haserot and his family. Holding an extinguished torch upside-down, it represents a symbol of life extinguished. Wings are outstretched and the gaze is straight ahead.
IN THE END, DEATH ALWAYS WINS. LEST THE FACES NOT BE FORGOTTEN...
This channel is focused on casually walking and viewing a handful of the thousands of forgotten names and faces at various cemeteries near and afar. Seeing their faces up close. And when able, telling the stories behind their names.
Most graves are unknown and lost to history.
Some are famous.
And some infamous....
....and some with tragic endings.

Yes, me too. We place such energy to achieving material goals in our short lives only to realize how meaningless they actually are when we are in our graves for eternality. True joy and happiness to savor is more important than wasting time chasing things that give us pain and lose precious time for enjoying life.

It's possible if there is something like that, human spirits could be going back and forth between family and their grave/urn/marker. Who says you would have to stick to one location. Most of us don't know how it would all work though. If there are spirits, with that many graves, with thousands of graves, you'd think the odds would be high of some being around there at some point in time.

Talking of butt prints. I once attended a meeting at the local council in the councillors’ committee room. There weren’t enough chairs so I sat on the old and highly waxed, committee table at the back of the room. Meeting over, I got up to leave when I noticed that the wax had melted leaving a detailed imprint in the shape of my backside! Needless to say, I was the last to leave the room - I met the caretaker on his way in! Bet he still wonders to this day, who the culprit was.

I once was at a parade and the Shriners were in costume waving scimitars. Of course the tiny cars were there too. People were clapping when I heard a voice behind me say, “The Shriners are great, but it’s the Masons you can’t trust!” Once again, a know-it-all who has no idea about Masonry is but thinks they do. I’ve had several friends who were the same way and later became Freemasons and told me that they were so wrong about what they had thought. All I know is that when my time comes, I’ll be seeing 1/3 of our Presidents, Supreme Court Justices, Edison, Paul Revere, Ben Franklin, Mozart, Simón Bolívar, Mark Twain, Churchill, Hoover, John Elway, John Wayne, and thousands of more. Even all seven of the Ringling brothers. I think I’ll be in pretty good company.

Very beautiful old Masoleum/Cemetary, & super interesting crematorium! Thanks for bringing us along! The one thing I have never understood about storing bodies in Masoleums is; families tend to forget the generations that go beyond their Great Grandparents. Generally, once these buildings reach 100 yrs old or more, nobody is alive anymore that once owned them, AND, nobody wants to buy these ancient, moldy body-filled crumbling structures. They are usually very old and in need of repair, generally with very little room "left" to inter any new bodies within their walls. If you search long enough on KZbin, you'll run across videos of completely abandoned and semi abandoned mausoleums, all because everyone that owned them died, (among other reasons).😔

I use to work part time for a friend who did cleaning of Funeral Homes and I would clean the Funeral Home and Mausoleum at the contract he had which was about 3 miles from my house. Use to start at midnight and leave about 4:00 a.m. twice a week. And, yes, they had open coffins almost all the time. the conversations were a little one sided. As for the Mausoleum, it was a bit spooky. Always thought of that show Phantazam bc the coffin placements are high above you. I always got that building done very quickly, as it was poorly lit, especially at night. That Chapel looks like a Masonic "gathering" place and is generally off limits to non Masons.

I think they get the reputation of being a cult because they don't allow people to know what they do or believe. As a Lutheran we were never allowed to be Mason's due to this fact. I don't think there are as many Mason's around today but it is every bit as secretive.

The Masonic Lodge is very secretive, symbalistic, ritualistic and mysterious. My Grandfather was a Mason in a very small community. They moved into another community nearby, and after attending one meeting, he refused to be involved. Years later, just after his death, the members spent time with his body before the family did. The first thing they ask my Grandmother was " Where is the ring?" The funeral upset my father with the staffs, white apron and gloves and they carried the casket. I'm not trying to judge, it just seemed that they took over as the family stood confused. There was a lack of compassion for our family. Please forgive if I've insulted anyone. My intentions are not to hurt anyone. JFK said many times that secrets were never a good thing...I agree, as full disclosure/explanations, may not have hurt my family as much. ♥️ As for the butt print, it couldn't have been more perfect if a naked butt had made it...lol

That's one of the most beautiful mausoleums I've ever seen! And the Columbarium is very nice too. Thanks for sharing. However, I'd hate to be shoved in a crypt in a wall - or PLEASE toss my ashes to the four winds! As much as I love wandering through cemeteries, and I'm absolutely fascinated by beautiful mausoleums, I'm actually a strong advocate for all-natural, unembalmed, 'green burials' (no casket - just a shroud or woven seagrass casket), with only temporary markers - because I think it's the least we can do to put something that's not been poisoned back into the earth after a lifetime of taking and taking from the earth. And while we are running out of places to bury our dead, old cemeteries all over the country (and the world!) fall into shocking disrepair when there's no one left to care about the graves of the forgotten. But much worse:- People don't realise that almost HALF A BILLION GALLONS OF HIGHLY TOXIC AND CARCINOGENIC FORMALDEHYDE EVERY YEAR is buried with the embalmed bodies in the USA alone - 2.35 MILLION OF THEM, EVERY YEAR!! Embalming doesn't actually 'preserve' a body anyway - in fact, people don't seem to understand that modern arterial embalming is only intended to preserve a body long enough to keep it in optimal viewing condition UNDER REFRIGERATED CONDITIONS for a maximum of 10 days. (There are, of course, very costly types of 'secret recipes' for embalming that will preserve a body indefinitely). But once an embalmed body is removed from a refrigerated environment and buried OR entombed in a vault it will decompose just like any other deceased organism does. And embalming is doing a great deal of unnecessary damage to our environment. Because half a billion gallons of formaldehyde each year leaches out of the decomposing bodies and into the soil and the water table as those 2.35 millions of bodies and caskets buried each and every year in the US begin to break down.... In fact, due to the high levels of toxicity and known carcinogenic properties of formaldehyde and the damage it's doing to the soil and water table, there are names given to the produce grown in fields that surround cemeteries in rural farming regions all over the US:- Names such as "Frankencorn", and "Frankenwheat" etc etc - which WE THEN CONSUME! And even the very bottled water we drink thinking it must be so pure is contaminated because it's constantly leaching into the water table! No wonder the instances of cancers have risen in numbers, types, and severity so much in recent years! Cremation is a much 'greener' option, or better still - 'aquamation' (aka alkaline hydrolysis) which only uses a small amount of power and water to reduce a body to ashes similar to cremation, and it is therefore a much more environmentally friendly option. But back to mausoleums...there are currently hundreds of mausoleums in the USA which are currently in receivership, scores more are falling into severe states of disrepair, and dozens are in the process being condemned, and some are now being or have already been completely demolished after years of neglect, resulting in being condemned, and finally being abandoned with the remains still inside - which have then been vandalised - meaning that the vaults have been broken into, the caskets removed, the remains desecrated for jewels and valuables (and perhaps even for the mere curiosity of those with no respect for the dead!), while the skulls and long-bones in particular are turning up on the black market for exorbitant prices - and most of those appear to be purchased for use in the occult, like 'black magic', while some people think it's actually 'cool' to have a human skull sitting on their book-shelf! The Internet is filled with videos by 'urban explorers' showing viewers the utter devastation inside quite a few of these abandoned and condemned mausoleums, while the news reveals dozens of stories from family members who either can't get their ancestors out of these condemned mausoleums due to 'red tape', or they require thousands of dollars to get them out and re-bury them in a permanent location. And many of these mausoleums are far less than 100 years old! Search KZbin and you'll find dozens of videos of abandoned and ransacked mausoleums! It's a terrible disgrace. Beautiful as many mausoleums are, they are still buildings - and few buildings are made to withstand more than 100 years, maybe 200 years at most...(even the Ancient Pyramids won't stand forever, and even they are crumbling!) Time has proven over and over again that mausoleums are NOT a PERMANENT storage place for our dead. The reasons for abandoned and vandalised mausoleums are myriad - but basically, no matter how great the salesmandhip for crypts and tombs in these quite beautiful mausoleums, there really is no such thing as 'perpetual care'! Often, as we've seen over and again, once a mausoleum is filled to capacity and there's no more profit to be made, or the original owners have passed on themselves, or the money that's supposed to be set aside for the so-called 'perpetual care' of the outer and interior maintenance of a mausoleum has run out - or 'goes missing'.. they become insolvent and very quickly fall into disrepair. Once the roof deteriorates due to lack of funds and begins to leak, the interiors begin to fail rapidly and I'll say it again: there really is no such thing as' perpetual care'. As I understand the law, only 5% of the sale price of each crypt/vault must be kept by a mausoleum's management for the specific purpose of 'perpetual care' - and it's proving in very many cases to be not nearly enough, particularly in the smaller mausoleums one sees in mid-sized cities all over the country. In some of the largest and most elaborate modern mausoleums in the US, some vaults can sell for several hundred thousand dollars - particularly in the newer, VERY large and most ornate modern facilities which have been built in recent years. These are absolutely beautiful facilities and are filled with hundreds of thousands of tons of polished marble, glorious cathedral-sized stained glass windows, funerary art and statuary, and some of the family vaults even have magnificent private gardens with marble fountains and statuary! Some of these new facilities are just absolutely incredible. In fact one I've heard of was built to receive some 12,000 caskets and 14,000 cremains! And it IS BEAUTIFUL! And MASSIVE. It's several stories high and there's just endless marble corridors of crypts and vaults and art and statuary - one requires a map to navigate it - and all requiring an equally massive roof to protect it! AND - there's much, much more to a modern mausoleum than just walls of marble name-plates! Behind every vault is a chamber or maintenance corridor which hides and gives access to the drainage system (for bodily fluids) and ventilation system (for decomposition gasses to be allowed to escape and be treated before being released - otherwise a fully-sealed vault could explode!) And in older mausoleums this type of occurrence has been known to cause a great deal of very expensive damage, including to other vaults around them.....Remember what I said about embalming and decomposition? Well, that goes the same way for embalmed bodies interred in mausoleums too! And yes - they, too, must decompose. BUT - however big and beautiful and ornate and new and technically advanced a mausoleum may be, it simply can't remain 'forever new'. It may be a brand new facility NOW, but there are still a finite number of vaults in which to interr the dead, and therefore there is a finite amount of profits to be made, and a finite amount of funds to be set aside for the 'perpetual care' of this incredibly MASSIVE facility....And so when the facility is finally filled, or almost filled, that income ceases altogether and a building of that size requires constant maintenance - LOTS AND LOTS of constant maintenance. And LOTS AND LOTS of money to pay for it. The integrity of any building is only ever as good as the roof which protects it...In 100 years how many times must the roof of the building of such massive proportions need to be repaired before it must eventually be replaced? And of those scores of mausoleums all over the US which are currently in receivership, or are completely insolvent, and particularly those which have already been condemned and then vandalised and ransacked, it appears that in many of those cases, eventually the roofing maintenance has not been carried out due to the massive costs and dwindling funds (sometimes stolen funds) and so replacement was not forthcoming. And so then the integrity of the interior has failed also. The idea of 'eternal rest' in a Mausoleum may appeal to the many who don't like the idea of burial, cremation or aquamation - but I don't personally believe that mausoleums are any solution for a PERMANENT place to lay our dead to 'rest in peace'. Obviously some will outlast others - but none CAN be for 'eternity'..because the building itself cannot be. But that's just my opinion. . PS: Mortician, speaker, funeral home owner, and and author, Caitlin Doughty, has a KZbin channel on all things "death-related" which I highly recommend. It's called "Ask A Mortician" - and she has hundreds of videos which you'll binge on once you discover her channel! One video is entitled, "Why don't mausoleums smell" - which gives a pretty good explanation of modern mausoleums....I particularly loved her little self-composed ditty called, "Give me Drainage and Vents"......and I really hope you enjoy her wonderfully off-tap sense of humour as much as I do! One of her books is entitled, "Will My Cat Eat My Eyeballs?" It's based on the questions about death that children have actually asked her : ) For those who are already familiar with Caitlin's work - "Hello fellow Deathlings!"

@@FacesoftheForgotten HELLO my fellow deathling! I am both honored and so pleased that you took the time and effort to read all of my long-winded essay on 'the downside of mausoleums' - and completely humbled that you thought it worthy of a ❤️ and a pin! Thank you, Sir. Of course, it's just my personal opinion, but I am very saddened by the rising incidences of vandalism and total desecration of the caskets and remains of those interred at mausoleums, particularly of those which have fallen into abandonment - such as the one in Rhode Island, and The Mound, The Abbey, Richmond, The Good Shepherd, just to name a few abandoned mausoleums off the top of my head - all of which have suffered desecration of remains, except for The Good Shepherd which, to date, I believe is a crumbling ruin, but the interred have remained undisturbed - but I fear that it's only a matter of time before unconscionable vandals strike there... And for that reason I would be grateful if mausoleums frll out of favor with the public and no new ones were built, because sooner or later the building's life span WILL end when it's no longer financially feasible to operate - and then in come the vandals. It breaks my heart to see the disrespectful ways these cretins have treated people's loved one's remains - even if there is no one left to remember them or care .... Which is why I love your channel so much - YOU literally breathe 'life' into the stories behind the lives of the departed, just by saying their names or filming their names and/or pictures on their headstones as you pass them by - and then you share them with US! Thank you so much. XX Kindest and most sincere regards, Jamie Whiteoak

I have never seen a columbarium quite like this one. It reminds me of a library. In Britain they have those curtains and at the end of the service, the casket goes via conveyer belt to the crematorium private area.

Seems today they cremate before the service. I am so sadden I can't pay my respects to the person. I don't like cremation and would like to see someone in death. I is closure for me.

Enjoyed very much. Have been fascinated with mausoleums since I was about 4 years old when I saw one for the first time. Am sorry you could not show more of the dates but figure you didn't because of it being Masonic Beautiful mausoleum. Thank you again

In that dark room with the open crypt. So many crypts had inverted pentagrams. Very creepy, especially given the symbolism

The pentagram of the eastern star, look it up, By the time you get to 33° in masonry you must commit to lucifer.... I notice that many of the people involved were before tell live vision. Seems they didn't have much entertainment before the electronic ouija board......

@@guns2keepmefree those entombed in that mausoleum had strong ties to high level freemasonry. They camouflage with Christianity but it worship of Lucifer

Isn't that the Masonic symbol with the G in the center. I had a female friend who was a member of the Eastern Star, the female organization within the Masons. You are a brave man, and I am glad that you take us along with you. Fasctinating! Did you ever come across the people who were in the creepy mausoleum? Lu Ann
