Afterall he works as an exterminator to legally satisfy his sadism, is against Roy asking Skid and Pump to remove their clothes, in a non-canon sketch he critizes Bob Velseb for killing people and says that animals don't have emotions by his standards and in ARG part of Episode 4 he seems to be resisting the want to kill Skid and Pump. So he has some degree of morality and humanity. Still an animal abuser tho.

One of the hidden QR codes tells us he was basically fighting with himself for months before finally snapping, as he didn't want to let himself hurt a child.

This character is interesting to me. We don't see much of his home life but from the little screentime you can tell he's psychopathic in nature. Not necessarily evil as he doesn't see anything wrong in what he's doing to cats, but he just has a basic psychological need to inflict violence on them. It's probably why he decided to get a job as an exterminator The reason he chooses cats specifically is because his mother takes care of them, making them easy targets. Dexter isn't necessarily sadistic as he didn't want to resort to harming Skid at first, but he is a legitimate psychopath

Dexter is my favorite character (and boyfriend /silly), he's very complex when it comes to his personality and mindset. He was already insane before going to Lila's house, and even more after all the events on the following episodes. In the notes he writes in the months he was trapped in the doll, we can see him losing his sanity slowly as time passed. On one of the notes, he expresses his anger after Skid receives a Halloween gift for Christmas instead of a cat (Lila mentioned how Skid wanted one, even if Skid doesnt even like them). There's a reason behind this. Dexter asked Skid to get a cat because he wanted to prevent himself from killing Skid, and instead he wanted a cat that "doesn't have feelings" (as he expressed on a doodle by Pelo, where he says animals dont have feelings). Pelo said he's planning on making a short were we can see Dexter's past with his mom, and how he became insane. Fun fact: he canonically has ASPD, which makes him a sociopath (basically a psychopath with standards) due to very possibly childhood trauma. We can know he's not a psychopath because 1, Pelo confirmed it, 2, he has certain standards as seen in minute 6:09 where he complains with Roy about the clothes thing, and in the notes (ARG) he stops himself from killing Skid and Pump as i said before. In conclusion, Dexter is not pure evil, he's a sociopath with trauma that kills animals because he was never taught that they have feelings (and was possibly neglected/abused when young). He's a disturbed individual and, as Pelo said, a bad guy trying not to get worse. A complex and tragic character, probably the most complex of the show when it comes to psychology.

Dexter possessed the doll after dying because he wanted to get revenge on Skid and Lila because of the demon who was in their attic

I think the idea of dexter's psychopathic nature worsened while he was possessing the doll. Initially he had a need to harm things, so he took the roll of an exterminator to avoid hurting people and to hurt vermin to fulfill his needs, only occasionally killing a cat. Once he was in the doll however, he slowly started going insane, he thought of killing skid and pump but refused to because they were kids but I guess being a kids plaything slowly drove him insane to the point where he'd do anything to fulfill his needs.
