THE CHRONICLES

Күн бұрын

After leaving Tokyo Auto Salon that Saturday afternoon, we headed down to a different part of Tokyo to check-out the Spoon Sports "Kanpachi Auto Salon" event, which is an annual gathering hosted by Tatsuru Ichishima and Spoon. They haven't participated at TAS the last few years and have decided to host a meet-and-greet type of event at their Type One facility instead. It's a big party where everyone is welcome and you get to check out some of the Spoon Sports builds and share some drinks with fellow Spoon lovers. After we hung out for a few hours, we once again hopped back into the car to go check-out a meet that was being hosted by the Level One Japan car club, at the UDX Akihabara parking area, a location you'll be familiar with if you've watched the Vlogs in the past few years. This was the spot where the greatest Chronicles Meet in Japan could have ever happened, but....well...it didn't.
I also like to nickname this episode the "Yuta Birthday Party" episode, and you'll see why when you watch it. Enjoy :)

What's so special about spoon sports? Every build I ever saw on Honda tech a decade ago struggled to make the stock crank horsepower from the factory. Their parts are endurance focused right? Honda parts from the factory you can beat up. That's why every kid with a wife beater and a sideways hat has one. What am I missing about spoon sports?
@TrackSol
@TrackSol 5 жыл бұрын
6000pounds That particular EA Civic made 230 hp out of the 1.6 DOHC ZC engine, in the late 1980s! Spoon wasnt focused on just max engine power though, their engines were precisely balanced and the cars ultra light weight. Their concept was to tune the whole car, not just the engine. So they would take something like the Civic Type R, get 30 more horsepower, change the gearing, drop a couple hundred pounds of weight, stiffen the chassis and tune the suspension and brakes. Of course they would sell individual parts, but that isnt their overall tuning philosophy.

@@TrackSol I don't doubt they make awesome cars. That's cool they make parts for sale as well. What kids don't understand that spending a couple thousand on valvetrain isn't going to make some huge NA beast. Everything about that civic is custom. What you described is what every race team has been doing since the beginning of race teams. Some teams win and some don't. We are not talking about a dominating race team. hondasupport.blogspot.com/2011/08/spoon-company-history.html?m=1 from 1988 to 2010 they won half a dozen events give or take.

6000pounds Sure thats what race teams have been doing forever. Spoon was one of the first to do it with Hondas. Add to that also selling the same parts to whoever was willing to pay. Early on, there were few companies making parts for Hondas and Spoon and Mugen were the best, especially in quality. In the US hardly anyone made parts and often times the Japanese parts were better quality and even made more power due to them having more experience with Hondas. As time passed and Hondas got more popular, new companies emerged making just as good or better products. Spoon didnt start doing Kswaps until after the USA started doing them. That's more an American hot rod thing, especially since before Kswaps, Japan already had the swaps we Americans wanted. I agree that their heyday in racing was the 90s, and that can be attributed to many things. Honda not making cars with double wishbones anymore and much heavier, other companies making much better cars now than before, etc. So today, I think part of the allure or fame of Spoon, and Mugen, is respecting their legacy and their close ties to Honda. Kind of like AMG, Ford Racing, BMW and Brabus. You are right though that just some valvetrain from ANY brand isnt going to make an NA beast.
