As someone with unmedicated ADHD, I have tried probably 100 different productivity methods, or at least I've tried to understand that many. This is the FIRST METHOD that I have not only been able to understand, but that I feel able to actually implement in my life. You are so correct that other methods are just so overwhelming, I can't even get to the point of even TRYING them to see if they work or not. I watched this video probably 5 or 6 times or more while I took my own notes, until I felt like I understood it enough to explain to someone else. I am especially grateful for you explaining the Pareto Principle and the danger of "busy work" that feels productive but really isn't. That is one of my BIGGEST issues. Also I love taking breaks that turn into doom-scrolling. Now I am ready for my classes/work to begin on Monday. (: THANK YOU SO MUCH! My ultimate goal is CRNA school after I finish my RN and work in the ICU, and now I actually feel like I can really do it, and it's not just a crazy idea lol.

I can tell you what has worked for me, after such many years: It will be hard and uncomfortable, this won't change, the start is the hardest thing, after starting, going on is easy, just don't get distracted after you've started work; Make it as simple as possible: Write down the most important task to do, only focus on this, forget everything else, when you are done, write down the next most important task, do the same until work is done, ADHD makes you procrastinate because of fear, this takes the fear away, the biggest opponent is the start each day, but it will get easier each day, because your brain will get used to do it

The way I work is very similar to you; the way I choose “important” tasks is to go with whatever is most limiting. If you learn systems theory, it is the elimination of limits that creates growth, and that is what I’m always intending to achieve: identify and eliminate the limits to growth.

Simplicity has always worked for me as a distinguished student and now an army servicemen. The key is to keep the system as adaptable and simple because they take the least effort to organise your life. The inverted pyramid priority system, focus without distractions, high intensity workouts have been the 20% that produced 80% of my achievements thus far
@r0bo1110 ай бұрын
Sometimes I find that I've been truth-hopping throughout my life and have conceded that nothing is certain, and ultimately the chaos is our adaption to life itself. It seems like the universe is a reaction engine to events that occur in your life and learning is essentially a trigger as a change agent. We delicately balance ourselves within the confines of observation and creation through a mechanism of energy itself; which in turn is the feedback loop of the universe. I think therefore, ones maintenance and dedication to health is the most fundamental and self evident truth that supersedes and pre-empts all other truths that gives rise to balance, harmony and unity.

Love it Stephanie! It’s going to be different for everyone but I like to prioritize based on difficulty (how much of my brain is this going to use?), how important is this going to be for my goals, how urgent is it (is there a hard deadline, etc). So I do the most difficult stuff first when my brain is at its peak and reserve the less-taxing stuff later. Basically the less I want to do something and the more likely it’s going to be left behind, the more likely I’ll make sure to tackle it first. I have another video planned to talk more about this prioritization concept so stay tuned!

Its really difficult in my job to do what everything this video mentioned. My job involves constantly liaising with multiple different stakeholders on multiple different projects at the same time. theres no ''3hr focus time'' to do a single work, every task is done in 10~20minutes max, sometimes 1~2 minutes, and majority of the time is waiting for the other stakeholders to get back to you so that you can proceed to do the next part of this mini task. and even so I cant focus on doing my multiple different tasks in peace cos I also work in the frontline, dealing with endless customers, endless phone calls about stuff related to my organisation but not the specific work that im doing, but not the specific work that im handling, which then leads to more liaising with different people and getting back, follow-up with customers. the only feasible tip i can take away from this video is to exercise in-between my work

Great advice and very well delivered. But…. My biggest issue is that it works when you control your work. 80% of my work requires input from others. Either beforehand or, increasingly, in real time. I’ve come to learn that makes it hard to focus on the most valuable stuff to do if others are not able to support at the right time. And I have not figured out the solution yet….
@vulnerablegrowth377411 ай бұрын
The only thing I didn’t like about inverted pyramid is that I’d always end up skipping the things that are not urgent but important in the long-term. For example, I would end up skipping things like interview prep (where I’d like to prepare months in advance) because it wasn’t urgent. Then, a job I’d want would pop up, but I wouldn’t have the time to be fully prepared. I started using Beeminder and now I’m much more consistant with this as it forces me to find time during the week to spend the minimum amount of minutes I want to spend on something like interview prep per week. :) I agree with everything else in the video! My ~only productivity tools are Freedom (to prevent distractions) and Beeminder (force me to do a minimum amount of work). I think Beeminder is especially useful for jobs like academic research and habits that don’t have consequences/deadlines attached to it. If you have a boss with deadlines, some of its value goes away but not all.
@jayshine196310 ай бұрын
Same! I started using the Eisenhower matrix for this reason. Now I make my list of things to do and then number them 1-4, where 1=important+urgent, 2=important+non-urgent, 3=unimportant+urgent, and 4=unimportant+non-urgent. I then go through my tasks starting with the 1s, then 2s, then 3s, then 4s (if I even get to those lol). It's definitely helped with doing the important and non-urgent things before the unimportant urgent tasks.

But he did not say start with the most urgent thing first. He said start with the most important thing first. In your case at some point interview prep was among the most important things, even though it wasn’t urgent.
@vulnerablegrowth377410 ай бұрын
@@abj136 I'm not particularly talking about him exactly, but I think most people will default to something like: importance = impact * urgency I guess I personally find it valuable to separate out the two because otherwise, I will consistently go for the more urgent thing. I'm not a student, but most students will avoid revamping their study approach because they have homework and tests, even though revamping their approach is the highest long-term impact thing they could do. When they watch a new learning strategy video, they'll follow through for a couple of weeks until exams are close and then revert to old habits because the urgency of the exam convinces them that this is the most important thing. And in the end, they never reach their potential for this reason. But if you have something like Beeminder that forces you to keep doing the thing, you are less likely to undervalue the long-term impact of certain things and push it to the side. It's easy to say, "interview prep is the most important thing that I should do first every day", but it's another thing preventing yourself from skipping it when other things start to get urgent. All in all, I just find this Beeminder approach works for me *in practice* while just telling myself initially that interview prep is important doesn't! Whatever the reason, I'm opting for what works! :)

Whenever I do high intensity workouts, my ability to focus drops so hard right after. Does anyone recognize this or have a fix? I am diagnosed with ADD. For me a 'mindless' walk works best because it's low intensity, keeps me from my phone, brings my outside to nature and the context switch (in terms of location) gives me time away from whatever I'm doing to have a fresh look when I get back. It is however costly in terms of time, and sometimes I feel lonely when I go all robot in terms of work-walk-work-walk-work-walk.

This is a really great video, thank you so much for making this! I have a question though, could you maybe provide an example of what your actual tasks would look like on a given day? I have found it helpful to be really specific in how I title tasks, so that it isn't ambiguous. I feel like when I want to create a 3 hour task though, it would be "work on ...." because most tasks wouldn't take that long (since I break them down so small). Any advice to tips here would be appreciated. Thanks!
@spoonfedstudy10 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching! No problem! Breaking things down to small tasks is a great idea too. Keeps the momentum going and lowers the activation energy. For me, I like in think in big picture steps and then let the small steps flow together accordingly. For example, if I want to concentrate my first important thing for the day on making the most amount of progress on the next KZbin video, I may dedicate the vast majority of my time to fleshing out a basic script with all the salient points I want to hit. Once that’s done, I’ll move onto the thumbnail and the title for the next step. If there’s still time left, then I’ll start fleshing out the script more and while thinkkng about images and edits to pair with it. Hope that helps somewhat
@nkearney10 ай бұрын
@spoonfedstudy Thanks for the reply. What I have actually done is just only choose the most important task, so just one, no matter how small it is, and then I just pick the next most important task. I thought that would really slow me down, but to be honest, it's not that bad. I usually just know what the next thing is, and don't really need to even "choose" it, I just do it. I have stopped making schedules and planning my days (outside of the first task the night before) because of this video, and it has seriously helped me feel less stressed, get distracted, and just do the work. Thank you, this video really helped me a lot. For anyone else who might find this helpful, I combined the system in this video with the 5-4-3-2-1 method for beating procrastination (will link below) and I am feeling way less stressed and actually getting work done again... at least until I get bored and need a new system again 😉 😭 Here's the video, not sure if a link will work, search Mel Robbins 5-4-3-2-1 if not kzbin.info/www/bejne/aqmafp6Ceayhq5o&pp=ygUZNSA0IDMgMiAxIHByb2NyYXN0aW5hdGlvbg%3D%3D

These tips are useful and I will implement them. But I have to say, working a good corporate job, I can’t usually work uninterrupted from my boss giving me new tasks which sometimes take only 20 minutes but have priority 1. just for someone to call and ask about xyz. I understand you can try to set boundaries but everyone working with others in an office environment knows that sitting down for 3 hours and working on your most important project is dillusional for most of us. And getting up excercising every hour is especially undoable. Focus on your most important work, is what I take from this video. So you would say do that the first 3 hours each day. My problem is that people can ask me for help on and off during an 8 hour work period. So I can't complete the 1st priority first. So it's difficult to focus on my 2nd priority because at a random time interval, somebody will ask for QA.

Audio seems a bit weird, like its pitched up or down, or perhaps you accidentally sped up the video.

Don't you get really sweaty if you do high intensity exercise throughout the day. I usually exercise in the morning wearing sweats, then have a shower and change into normal clothes and I try not to exercise after that. Do you have to change your clothes multiple times or do you just let yourself work through your tasks being sweaty?

Hahaa good question. Usually I modulate it enough so I’m not sweating like crazy cause I agree, that would be annoying
