thank you for posting this tutorial. i have been looking to create this type of effect for a while as easy as this, I've been using loads of masks in the past and colouring manually.. honestly free tutorials and tips like this help so much.. thank you

In order to achieve this effect I normally select the shadows in the color range selector and create the layer mask using that selection but I like your approach as well!
