So...about gin rummy: I remember playing it with my grandfather when I was a child. It turns out it isn't for the rich, it was invented in 1909 and was localized to just New York until the 1940's. Which makes sense, because my grandfather lived in the town of Lima in the finger lakes region of New York, a small town just south of Rochester. And I can assure you, he and his wife weren't rich. She was a house wife and he was a WW2 vet who worked as an airline pilot after he came home from the war. Gin became "popular" after the mid 40's when it was depicted in movies and became a Hollywood fad. The "rich person's card game" you are thinking of is Bridge - that's the one invented by Harold Vanderbilt, and the first games were played on his yacht.
