Naruto and Sasuke reached a conclusion different from their predecessors. Naruto had potential for greatness from the start, yet he easily was a failure for his young life. His predecessors were gifted, yet they all failed to achieve what Naruto did. Even the uchihas powers, while not dependant on hard work, require trauma aka severe emotion to progress the levels of the sharingan, they arent guarenteed powers. So yeah they all had the potential for greatness, yet they arent guaranteed it, and that part about deciding ones destiny through ur own path still holds true. Potential for greatness isnt the same as destined for greatness, is more accurately the message i'd say.

Sannin aren't strong? You're just comparing them to stronger characters. Jiraiya wasn't in any way weaker than Nagato as some people would believe. He was fighting the unknown and it wasn't until the very end that he discovered the secret. With that knowledge any of the Sannin would defeat Nagato. Orochimaru was winning in a fight between Tsunade and Jiraiya without the use of his arms. Albeit with the aid of Kabuto but Kabuto wasn't near Sannin level at the time. Even Itachi states that Jiraiya would outclass him and Kisame together. Both of which are incredibly powerful characters. Also, Hanzo faced the three of them in their youth. They were much less experienced at the time and I wouldn't say he clapped them. He defeated them sure. Could've killed them sure. But they all also got much stronger since the time they had fought Hanzo. Him being defeated by Nagato has no real merit to Nagato's superiority over Jiraiya either. Naruto was incredibly strong when he fought Nagato and he lost the fight against him until the nine tails emerged and Nagato expended the vast majority of his chakra. They're by no means weak.
