It's funny that you mentioned speedrunning for super skateboard: This was on Kusogrande, a mystery tournament for kusoge. I think the layout was what got it the honours - very difficult to map out in a single hour in a race format. But it did make for an interesting and challenging race as a result!

Water Ski is by far the most interesting game on the 7800 and is also the most frustrating. The problem is the difficulty curve is through the roof - with level 1 being what should be an end-game level. I would love to see a romhacker adjust this game to double the levels from 4 to 8 - and make the original levels what comes _after_ a set of four progressively more and more challenging levels. Because with fewer hazards, Water Ski would be a hell of a lot of fun. Genuinely. The issue is that the difficulty is so extreme.

I deeply appreciate you covering this system. It makes for a nice break from the Gakken line of systems. Plus, you just don't hear people documenting, or discussing, the Atari 7800 at all. I mean, I get why, but still, it deserves to be recognised as part of Atari's history. As always, thank you so much for showcasing these things, and being the amazing historian and teacher you are! 😊

3 Things I wish to bring to one's attention: 1. Episode 69. Could've been good with just a simple "Nice," but extra points for the Beavis and Butt-head reference. I suspect that required a few takes to get right due to snickering in the outtakes. 2. Sweet Nixie Tube clock in the lower left hand corner of the desk. Nixie Tubes are always good. 3. The river in Water Ski has to be somewhere near a Superfund site. Honestly, i wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't terribly far away from the Duwamish River near Seattle if you're on the West Coast, or between Hudson Falls and Battery Park in New Yark if it's on the East Coast.

I truly enjoyed Super Skateboardin'. It was a game that was fun to figure out the best path forward. Typewriters were super annoying though, picking up some speed makes them difficult to dodge. Also, you can hurt yourself in this game. By making your way to the roof and jumping off either end will cause you to drop your board and impact on the ground. There's no actual animation there, but it's an immediate game over.

Not to mention that the employees have to travel through pipes Mario style to get to their office.

I think it's important for people to remember that, while it seems obvious to us here in 2024, back in the 80s the idea of making console specific games tailored to a console market was still pretty novel. Which is to say that the 7800 being focused on bringing forward a wealth of top end (if aged) arcade hits didn't NECESSARILY indicate bad or complacent leadership. At least not on its own. At this point Zelda had only been out in the US for about a year and a half, and while Nintendo had certainly found great success with deeper console focused software, it was not yet clear that this was any more than a fad. Deep, rich, intricate experiences were for adults! Worse, adult nerds! People who built their own computers and knew what a motherboard was. Consoles were for kids, and kids wanted action. It's also notable that the majority of the notable "console focused" software for the NES at this point was developed in-house at Nintendo, and the rest came from Japanese developers (mostly Konami and Capcom). That kind of talent and know-how isn't something you can just manifest. The point being that, while the direction the 7800 had taken to this point seems ridiculous to us Future People gifted with the power hindsight, in the context of the time it made a lot more sense.

I don't know based on Froggo Game's Tank and Water Ski having a little bit of that arcade like game design plus bad game design, I feel Froggo should have signed up to make games for the Sega Master System instead and even though that's a bust given the lackluster 80s Sega of America weak marketing maybe Froggo would have survived and made games on the Sega Genesis and evolved... or that's just wishful thinking because Atari Corp's marketing focus was a mixed bag... you didn't know what Atari Corp really wanted you to buy... either the 7800 or the XEGS (imagine if the XEGS was a better 7800 compatible with 2600) or the people who purchased them and were confused by what to buy. However if they had made these games on the NES then probably Froggo Games would have really survived to become a Nintendo 64 game developer.
