SPORTS DAY: A GARGANTUAN FIESTA AT UNITY COLLEGE
The subtle wintry morning of December 8, 2018 witnessed vibrant energy and athletic exuberance at Unity College ground on the spectacular occasion of its Annual Sports Day. The highly enthusiastic mass participation was a colourful confluence of confidence and vitality, discipline and unity, cheering and winning. The spirit pervading through the string of thrilling events made it all the more pleasant and commendable.
College Principal Mr. Francis Castelino warmly welcomed the Chief Guest Prof Abbas Ali Mehdi, Vice-Chancellor Era Medical College and other dignitaries present at the occasion. Addressing the august gathering, Prof Mehdi highly appreciated the superb show. He said that competition is requisite to succeed, but it is more vital to compete yourself and be positive in your outlook. The Meet commenced as the Chief Guest Prof Mehdi released the myriad coloured balloons which is a mark of healthy competition of skill and vigour. It was entailed by the meticulous March-past as the young stalwarts swung their arms and thud their feet to the sprightly beats of the College band. The icing on the cake was the NCC girl cadets marching fabulously with military precision.
The event further rolled on to the lively eye-feasting drill of the tiny toddlers of Pre-Primary. They swayed a joyous rapture with ebullient moves accompanied by scintillating notes of ‘Chale-Chalo’. Most striking was the exquisite pageant of a rustic scene and the peasants braving the atrocities of the Britishers. Their short act mesmerized one and all. Next was Class I & II presenting the eye feasting drill ‘Indiya waley’. Their tri-colour attire and nimble steps in perfect synchronization with the spirit of the song struck the very chord of nationalistic fervour. Class III drill ‘Baadal Pe Paon Hai’ transported the onlookers to the highly charged world of aspirations and resolutions. Middle school girls came up with a very impressive dupatta drill showcasing agility and alacrity as they made various panoramic formations like peacocks, flowers and others. As it was orchestrated on the emotional appeal ‘Betiyaan, Betiyaan’ short gripping acts based on the poignant theme of ‘save the girl child’ and ‘educate the girl child’ supported the performance as thought provoking punctuations. It rendered the spectators awestruck. Pulsating in rhythm and harmony, the Meet graduated a notch higher when classes IV & V presented the power packed pomp-pomp drill ‘Daastaan-e-Ittihaad’. The medley of music, dexterity and precision brought home the great message of brotherhood and unity. It was greatly enjoyed by the spectators who were most generous in their praises.
It was followed by the impeccable, patriotic pyramids, breathtaking ring of fire, thrilling tug of war between classes XI and XII girls, and various races including 400 mtr, 200 mtr, 100 mtr and relay races. Events like shot-put, long jump and girls’ races were conducted a day prior to the Sports Day. All the winners of the track and field events were awarded with medals, trophies and certificates. The lively fanfare of vivacity, accolades and applause culminated with the vote of thanks by College President Dr. S. Kalbe Sadiq. The glittering event left an indelible memory etched on the minds of everyone.
