Geoff I feel your pain, man! This is exactly why I don’t send anything valuable through TSA and airline cargo handling. It’s like they have a sixth sense of what stuff is valuable and they try their best to ruin it. Every time I’ve taken something valuable on a flight (no matter how fragile or sturdy) they find a way to damage it. But cheap, inexpensive stuff gets through okay. Just mind boggling! If that had been a box of cheap drinking glasses you bought from Walmart they would’ve handled it like a baby. At least with USPS/FedEx/UPS you have better than a 50/50 chance of getting it back perfectly fine. TSA/airlines will abuse your valuables every time!

I think security check should really come at the VERY beginning of the airport journey, like when you haven’t even entered the building yet, therefore people have a chance to have their things back, but that would require EVERYONE, regardless of whether you are just visiting, just dropping someone off/accompanying someone, to pass through it. If passengers have something confiscated, they can give it to whoever dropped u off - obviously only if its family or friends, and hopefully they didn’t leave right after dropping u off. A mail-back station for confiscated items is just wishful thinking - realistically, it’s too expensive and neither cost-effective nor rational for its purpose. For non-passengers, I think they could have a locked area to store the items, then people could pick them back up when leaving. BUT…….other than for safety purposes, airports also make $$$$ confiscating items, by auctioning them, and obviously if they gave everyone the chance to keep their stuff, they wouldn’t make any profit. So, because of the money there is to be made, I highly doubt airports would actually implement such “generosity” policies. OR, the system could remain in place, unchanged, but passengers could label their stuff, have it stored in a locked place, and request it back after they return. If they are leaving a faraway place that they won’t return to anytime soon, they could label it and keep it at the airport if they know someone in that place and that person could pick it up/there could be an option, if circumstances allow, to get staff to find their checked bag, and store it in their checked bag. Bit of a rant but just my thoughts on how such systems could be tweaked for the better.

@@JohnDoeDeadhead420 It probably helps that I'm a Retired U.S. Air Force/Veteran with a DoD military ID...I don't have to pay to enroll in TSA PreCheck. And I do travel a lot to California, Hawai'i, Nevada, Texas, Georgia and West Virginia...TSA has always treated me well. Sometimes when available, I'll take a military hop or MAC flight to save money. When traveling commercial...Delta will let me pre-board the aircraft before all other passengers, sometimes let me sit in first-class, if a sit is available. It's a little embarrassing at times, because it brings attention to me...especially when the other passengers stare and thank me for my service out loud in the terminal. But I know the real reason they let me board on first...it's to bring visual awareness for safety and security control during flight. I’ve NEVER NOT had a problem at TSA when bringing Trading Cards of ANY type through, it comes up VERY weird on the scanner no matter how they’re sorted and as such they have to go through your things and look. For sealed product this is basically a death sentence. Just have someone drive the shit out or ship it out overnight in advance to a safe address. Otherwise you’re lowkey asking for this stuff to happen. I get being annoyed with TSA as they can be quite incompetent at times, but at the same time, 9/11 did happen so it’s probably good they’re looking lmao.
