In Ovi's very first NHL shift, he legally body checked someone and broke the glass! XD That one time he took a bad hit and lost a bunch of teeth, he went on to score something like 4 goals and win the game. He's also scored arguably the most beautiful finesse goals anyone has ever scored in the history of the sport. One of the best physical players of all time, but also one of the best finesse players of all time. There's never been anybody like Ovechkin. He's like an upgraded version of the old-school hockey stars like Howe, Clarke, or Richard. We've seen some other great players who combine great size and physical play with skill and finesse, like Jagr or Lemieux, but none of those other top 10 guys were quite so extreme in their physical play as Ovechkin is! He's a monster! O_O

It does not matter how old Svechnikov is. He asked for the fight, and he got it. Props to him for willing to stand up for himself against a guy in a higher weight class. Ovechkin dropping the gloves first, when Svechnikov asked for the fight, is more just Svechnkov being slow to the draw. Svechnikov had a chance to get some punches in, so the whole he dropped first thing is inconsequential. Brind'Amor needs to cut it out with that whole sick shpeal. People fight, and sometimes, the end result isn't pretty. He should be happy that a) Svechnikov is willing to go up against people like Ovechkin, and b) Svechnikov isn't going after some 4th liner goon, he's going after one of the league's best scorers. It doesn't matter if Svechnikov isn't a fighter. If you're gonna ask for the fight, be prepared to get a response, and be ready for it to go south. You don't get special treatment in the NHL, far from it. It is ridiculous for Brind'Amor to expect Ovechkin to ease up on him because he's just a kid and he doesn't know how to fight, especially in the playoffs no less. Some players will be dicks and play like absolute slime balls. You can't cry foul at this. The end result is ugly, yes, but it's an unfortunate result from a clean fight. Maybe next time, Svechnikov should stick to a guy more his size, or just not fight as much. All things said and done, hopefully Svechnikov returns swiftly.

People wouldn't be complaining so much if Ovi hadn't caught the guy so cleanly with such a hard punch. It's very rare that anybody actually takes such a hard shot in a hockey fight. And of course, we all know that you can't expect a guy to pull his punches once both parties have mutually consented to the fight. To my knowledge, this kind of knockout punch only happens about once every year or two in the entire league. Players famous for being good fighters can go an entire career without every landing such a great shot. Hell, even professional boxers can go through an entire career without landing such a clean knockout O_O

I mean...hey, its Hockey. It's a hard and tough sport which chisled veterans play through injuries and hits worse than what the kid got. And at one point, these veterans were new kids on the block aswell. It's unneccessary to put so much attention to this. The kid just learned a lesson that day, just like all veterans today learned when they first joined the NHL. The fact that it was a big veteran player like Ovechkin doesn't matter, the kid would end up learning this lesson from somebody else. Why NOT let it be Ovechkin? Better teacher you can't ask for. This kid will eventually (hopefully) be around in like 12-15 years and we'll call him a veteran and he will probably teach some new blood a lesson. Simple as that.

This story shows the softening and weakening of society and even hockey. He's not a kid. He's an adult in an adult league. He teased a bear and he got bitten. End of story. Even Brindamour softened up. He would have never gotten away with saying that BS in Philly.

Fighting is part of hockey, but so is series strategy. Yes, the kid got his butt stuffed down his throat, but give him credit, he got Ovi's goat, albeit at a stiff price. He took one for the team. The playoffs are the time for great teamwork, great hockey as well as individual discipline. Teams tend to reflect their Captain's mindset in the postseason. By accepting the kid's challenge, Ovi showed his team that it was acceptable to focus on fringe matters rather than let them roll off their backs. There are more covert ways to deal with the kid's challenge, especially behind the play. The kid actually showed more restraint than Ovi. Optimally, he should have kept his distance and skated away when Ovi dropped the gloves so he could draw an instigation penalty. The effect would have been the same. Now the Canes are back in the series with new life.

Ovi left a message for anyone wanting to fight him. Be prepared to get hurt and you will be pounded. Ovi has been there and seen a lot. For a rookie to go after him, that is guts but you better be prepared to take a beating. I think the other player thought he had a height advantage and he could win against Ovi.

Looking back, what if...Svechnikov simply backed away when he had the chance to do so? Would he have lost face and made the situation between him and Ovi worse? It looked to me that they were going at it since the start of that series but I'm not quite sure how it came to be.

Svechnikov made a STUPID decision and it cost him. If you're only 19, you better be able to fight if you're gonna start up with a grown man. Ovechkin isn't a bully or a goon out there. He has way more class than to go after a youngster who has never fought before. The kid was asking for it, Ovechkin gave him a couple chances to back off, and when he didn't, he gave it to him. What's he supposed to do, let the kid beat him up? It's too bad Svechnikov got hurt but maybe next time he'll be a bit more careful about who he tries to pick a fight with.

I don't think people are saying that Ovi crossed the line by fighting, I haven't seen that. What I've seen and I kinda agree with is that people don't like that Ovi went for the last punch. He was already knocked out and falling and Ovi puts in one last punch when he is going down. The fight was done, it was over. That's the thing I've seen that people don't like. And like I said, I kinda agree. Ovi knew he was a kid and it was his first fight. He also knew they weren't even in the same weight category. There was no reason for that last punch. You had already shown that the kid had no chance. There was no need for it. I'm not going to stand here and crucify him for it. It's more of a "C'mon man, there was no need for that".

Fights last until one player goes down. Ovi was in the process of throwing a punch (that never landed) as the dude was going down. Ovi's momentum propels him forward & down on-top of him, but he clearly stops fighting.

Poor kid didn’t last 8 seconds with the bull. As for Coach Rod, he had me laughing to his comments. Can he say ,with a straight face, that he wouldn’t have done exactly what Ovi did? Kid is slashing you, you slash back. Kid wants to go, and you skate away, Rod? No way! You don’t have one of the ugliest hockey noses because you only took hits. Maybe that’s how you did get the nose, took hits like this kid. I was too busy watching relevant players when you were playing.

I have absolutely no idea what Svechnikov was thinking. I understood when Cobourn fought Tom Wilson last season. He was a 4th line player taking out a first line winger. That makes sense. But Svechnikov is just as important to the Canes as Ovi is to the Caps so if you're going to go you better think you're going to win. It's actually so absurd that Svech would take this fight. He is like 250 lbs and 6'2 or something. And honestly if you're going to fight a guy that much bigger than you at least move your head or something! I actually really like Svechnikov he's one of my favorite players, but this was the dumbest decision I've ever seen someone make in a hockey game.

I don’t get the relevance to Ovechkin taking off his gloves first. Someone is always going to drop the gloves first in a fight, and it’s generally the person who is asked to fight. It sucks the kid Got injured, but I don’t see why so many people are acting like Ovi had a responsibility not to fight because he was bigger. He’s not going to fight bruisers, because he’d be taken off the ice for 5 minutes and would probably lose anyway. Fighting svech is closer to an equal trade off, and he was asked to fight. I’ve just never seen a fight get this much negative attention and analysis before.
