This is more than a riot because of a simple suspension. French Canadians were oppressed for hundreds of year. When Maurice Richard came, he was the first french Canadian to be the best in something. He proved to the rest of North America that french Canadians can be more than simple factories underpaid workers and cheap labor. He was a hero for the working people, which were approximately every french Canadian. This suspension was another example of that injustice and discrimination by Campbell and all the powerful and rich anglophones. People were rid of this and this riot was justified. Furthermore, this riot was the start of the revolution in the sixties in Québec, which brought it to a modern society with progressive ideas. It isn't surprising though to see how Sportsnet (an english canadian company) described this event.

@Dave White what you don’t know is there were events that happened before he punch the reff... the reff was holding Richard a the same time he was getting punch by other players so he wasn’t able to defend himself... and you can’t denie that it wasn’t the first time this type of discrimination were done

@Dave White he was holding richard in a way that the bruins players could punch him in the face as he wanted. Richard was just freeing himself from this.

What a silly reason to have a riot. Maurice Richard had already won multiple Stanley Cups by this time and multiple awards. Richard intentionally struck a official and that would be a major suspension even in todays game. He deserved to get suspended.
