2/27/16 while backpacking in the Superstitions , I took about a ten foot fall , ripping both kneecaps out of place. Intense pain and unable to walk , remembering I had just bought Spot gen3 a couple of days before the trip. I pressed the SOS button, about two hours later a DPS officer rapped into my location hooked me up on a long line ; lifted us both out and I was in a hospital in Phoenix 40 minutes later. Surgery for repair of both knees the next day , ten days in the hospital, four weeks in a rehab facility and eleven months off work.

I was gonna get the gen 3 but some people say some messages never go through even months later and not knowing if he or she got the message is bad feeling when in a pickle. I like the price but think I’ll get the garmin explorer really like the build in GPS navigation and monthly price point is the same.

The problem came when I read the reviews and so many people say it hardly works and has a 'middle-man' emergency setup instead of going straight to a proper 406 PLB system. So I think you should look into that.

QUESTION: the text message... on the trail you only have one message?
@HungryStickMan3 жыл бұрын
Technically, the "HELP", "OK" and "MESSAGE" buttons can all be customized to the max SMS length of 160 characters. So online, you can program them to say & notify whatever/whoever you want individually.

Great review, if you accidentally set off the SOS button, is there a way to deactivate it?
@rmatvmc4 жыл бұрын
With this model I don't believe so. That's why they make it dummy proof as much as possible so you don't do it by accident.

TO CANCEL S.O.S. Press and hold the S.O.S. button until the light blinks red. Let SPOT work until the S.O.S. button stops blinking red to finish sending the cancellation message. The Message Sending light will blink green indicating it has sent the cancel message. Turning off your SPOT while in S.O.S. mode DOES NOT send an S.O.S. cancel message

I would need this device once a year for a camping/hiking trip of several days, maybe two weeks at the most. Are there short-term subscription plans for very, very occasional use?
@rmatvmc4 жыл бұрын
Garmin also has a Flex plan which is what I use. There is no activation fee and you can freeze it when you're not using it. Monthly price just depends on how many messages you thin you'll use. - Chase

Yes there is; you can pay monthly- that’s what I’ve been doing with mine.

Hey,. If this was in your car and you go for a walk without it but it was still on could family members still locate you if they have your log in details?
@rmatvmc4 жыл бұрын
If it is left on then yes, people should be able to go online and see your last tracking point.
@Icutmetal4 жыл бұрын
They could locate your car, but why wouldn’t you take it with you? That’s the whole point.

I appreciate the reviews. For the life of me I'm not understanding having up to 14 pre-made messages when it appears we can only send one of them, the same one goes to all contacts, and I can't change which message it is unless I hook up to a computer to do it. Am I understanding this wrong?
@rmatvmc4 жыл бұрын
That is correct. It does seem weird. I didn't really think about that too much when I was filming this. I have a lot of experience with my Garmin but haven't had a chance to use the SPOT Gen3. The Spot X bluetooth or the Garmin units allow you to send custom messages or preset. - Chase

@@rmatvmc It may be something that requires considerable explaining in order to get many listeners to understand. I watched a couple more reviews and while some things were clarified a bit more, I'm still not quite wrapping my head around it. Then again, we're all gear junkies to a certain extent, and maybe I shouldn't be getting quite so excited when, while hiking the half dozen or so 14ers I intend to do in July, the chances I'll leave the trails by more than maybe 100m to camp are pretty slim. Take care.

One search and rescue cost Canadiian tax payers $100, 000 ! SPOT cost about $20 a month ! Then it would be a simple rescue without any search ! Time it was LAW that any ATV , ski-doo sold in Canada come with one and person has to actvate or person pays the cost of searching for them ! Even if they force us tax paying people to cover the $20 a month we would be dollars ahead and way less death would happen.
