DIY Spot Welder brews metal up to 6 millimeters. And in terms of capabilities and convenience there are no equal. Today I will show how everything is arranged and how the spot welding that every man wants to cook. And for those who want to collect something similar and avoid possible errors, there will be a detailed video where the concept will be presented - resistance welding + spotter. There I will show how to do transformer calculations with your own hands. You will know what the future DIY Spot Welder is capable of. We rewind, conduct tests. We will improve automation, add manual control with our own hands. And I will try to do it so that even a schoolboy understands.
And so, in the previous video, I made a spot welding frame and shared the drawings. The Achilles heel for me was the selection and rewinding of trance. Today I can say that transformers with windings on two or three core samples are far from the best option. More stringent characteristics can be achieved from transformers with an armored magnetic circuit or toroidal. I opted for a 1 kilowatt OSM transformer. Single-phase dry multipurpose Weight is 14.5 kg. Such a transformer is better than from a microwave in that its magnetic circuit is 2 times larger. And that means copper on the secondary can fit much more. For greater power, both primary windings are connected in parallel. For small jobs like welding batteries, wire and busbars up to a millimeter thick. The transformer is powered by 220 volts. For more serious welding, using the batch switch, I switch the power to 380 volts. Everything is cheap and cheerful because it is the spot welding that every man wants.
When powered from 220 V using automation, you can change the power from 30 to 99 percent. And the pulse duration is adjustable from 1 to 50 periods. 50 periods equal to 1 second. 1 Period is 20 milliseconds
Such automation is bought by those who collect spot welding from transformers from microwave ovens for welding batteries and other small jobs. DIY Spot Welder The board is not bad, but there are two drawbacks.
The first flaw. The board has no manual mode. But you can do it yourself with the help of any two-channel toggle switch and optocoupler soldered to the cathode.
The second drawback is that the thyristor can burn out when connected to 380V. In theory, this problem can be solved by replacing the native optical isolator with the MOC3062 optical isolator. In practice, I connected the automation through an intermediate relay of 10 amperes. It worked - though not for long. Then I put the contactor at 63 A and resistance welding + spotter began to work perfectly. It turned out a cool do-it-yourself home-made work. Unlike the intermediate relay, the contactor works great, but when you release the pedal, it did not turn off without load. When switching the bag to 380 V, the power is not regulated because in this mode the voltage goes only through the coil of the contactor. More importantly, you can change the delay of one to 50 milliseconds in automatic mode
Automation is guaranteed to cook evenly and really helps a lot. Especially when you need to make a large number of identical tacks. When switching welding to manual mode, the power is not regulated both at 220 V and at 380 V. The whole welding process can be controlled with one foot. A large pedal reliably compresses the workpiece. The small pedal turns on the automation. In manual mode, welding will continue until you release the small pedal.
Let me remind you that this contact welding can be used as a spotter for bodywork. On the side there are welding sockets; connectors for welding batteries are connected to them. You can connect a puller or a reverse hammer which generally works well in the mode from 380 V. This is the spot welding that every man wants
