On this edition of the show, we're considering the question. Is it possible to put a value on music? Could you put a price on the song which made you fall in love again?
Rising revenues have been a feature of the past decade, since streaming platforms were credited with saving the music industry from ruinous levels of piracy. But streaming has been cast as both hero and villain in the musical world, with artists often earning royalties with just a fraction of a cent for a single player of their songs. So the mantra streamers don't pay artists became a common refrain when discussing the music industry. And as the biggest name in the business, Spotify often found itself as the target of such frustration.
So the platform decided to try to change the narrative by revealing a wealth of data about their revenues and royalty payments, hoping this transparency would help to correct what they considered to be misunderstandings, leading to unfair and inaccurate criticism.
It came in the form of a report called Loud and Clear, and the company has just released its latest edition, which reveals some fascinating figures and music trends.
On this show, I'm putting the spotlight on streaming through a lively and candid discussion with Bryan Johnson, Spotify's Head of International Artists and Industry Partnerships. And as an artist himself, he's equipped to view the issue from both sides.

That is the problem with large companies, corporations, they have no limit to enrich themselves and they do not distribute that wealth with those who make it possible. Spotify is no exception. That is why the entire world is at a crossroads today, it must fight to end the reign of these corporations that take advantage of and exploit those who make their existence possible. The day must come when the worker, the supplier, receives part of the profits as well. How much richer do they want to be? They are devourers of wealth and they want more and more and it never seems to be enough, because they also want the power that wealth gives them and then when they have more power comes abuse and corruption, not solidarity or empathy. I have yet to see any corporation doing the right thing. I hope that in this fight that is taking place in the Middle East the good guys win, because if the bad guys win I don't want to think about what is coming our way, more abuses, more suffering and more injustice. We people are many more, billions more, we must win, we deserve respect, we need justice.
