I'm a musician myself & I understand the frustration. But I'm also in IT. My guess is that one of the main reasons for the price increase is the infrastructure it needs to store data. Imagine the massive amounts of data Spotify needs to store, the cooling system a data center needs, employees to maintain them, the redundancy it needs & if they need another location to add more data centers, which they have to pay for that building or land or whatever. Big data is insane & now they are relying on Google Cloud for that as well.

Love that you made this video. There really needs to be more discussion about the place these apps and devices have in our lives. You can't beat the convenience of smartphones and subscription services, but just because one singular app/device can 'do everything' doesn't necessarily mean that it should. One of the major sacrifices you make for ultraconvenience is intentionality and deliberateness. Whether you realize it or not, you will inevitably become less engaged with whatever you're doing when it takes virtually no effort to do. A year ago I cancelled Spotify, bought a refurbished ipod, and rebuilt my MP3 collection. It wasn't until then that I realized just how much damage that app had done to the way I consumed music. I had almost entirely forgotten about some of the niche indie artists I used to love simply because their careers in music ended before Spotify launched and nobody was advocating to get them on the platform. I wasn't following my favorite bands for new releases because I was relying on Spotify to notify me of new drops. I wasn't making playlists because I was relying on their curated daily mixes. I wasn't listening to full albums or even 99% songs I had saved because I was just living in my Recently Added tab. Shit is completely different now. I fell back in love with so much of my old catalogue just through the process of this project. So if you're subscribed to Spotify Premium and on the fence about going back to MP3's (or even thinking about collecting them for the first time), I won't tell you what the best choice is for your situation, but I do want you to ask yourself this: Is Spotify actually providing you with tools to cultivate your passion for music? Or are you paying a company for the convenience of being able to think less about how you access and engage with art that you love?
@Fyre05 ай бұрын
What are you using with the refurbised ipod? Itunes? Something else? Are you just... buying the albums/songs off Itunes? I'm ready to jump ship from spotify and started researching upgraded/modified ipod classics. Just not sure where I'd get my mp3s from as the itunes app is GARBAGE on windows now.

Nodded violently to this video throughout the entire run-time. It is so much more beneficial to just have an mp3 player, I got one myself and its the best investment of tech I've ever done. Battery lasts for an entire week. Charge only takes a few hours. The frame rate is literally powerpoint slide level, but literally all I need is the music. Asides from my mp3 player, my alternate to Spotify... as I have android... is simply to.... sail the seven seas for a "special" Spotify. My faves are barely getting paid, so you're very correct abt paying/supporting them DIRECTLY. I'm so glad more people are realising that companies like Spotify are so predatory. They are constantly pushing the waters for how much they can take away from people until there's a big enough pushback, and it pisses me off. Hoping this vid is a wake-up call to some people. Long ass comment ik ik but I liked this vid and your voice was relaxing 🙏🙏

I use Apple music, I like the quality and convenience, but I still keep a full library of lossless music (CD Quality) to play on my modded iPod classics. I like to buy CDs of my favorite artists so I will always have them, and as a sort of collection. Listening on a dedicated device can have some nice advantages, my Main iPod has 1TB of SSD storage and the battery lasts over a month. When was the last time you listened to music on your phone, then found yourself scrolling an app, then watching a video? With a dedicated device you can focus on your music, really enjoy it, with no distractions or notifications interrupting it.

Great video bro! Another layer of insight I’d like to add: As a musician, discovering new music is part of the passion. There’s no better high then when I find a new song I love, or even better, an album full of bangers. The issue is, the music industry is so saturated with people trying to chart that people rarely make real albums anymore. Like, an album is a body of work. It needs a concept, a sonic image, a story. It doesn’t even have to be serious. I can appreciate an album with songs that “aren’t good enough for the chart” but put me in the artist world from start to finish. I don’t feel like going out of my way to buy an album from artist where only the singles hit and the rest is just fluff. Every single song being designed to chart makes a lot of artist work really monotonous and hard to listen to. The disappointment is immeasurable when I go on Apple Music, save an album to listen to, and the whole thing is just…. Meh. I’d be pissed if I spent money on that lol. Whether it’s a small or large artist, I hope that people refocusing on actual artistry will motivate people to buy more physical copies. Until then, I don’t really see the point.

i think as a person who makes music, streaming is terrible for discovery but it’s great for commitment. like none of my friends truly expect for us to get selected for a spotify playlist, that application is for midsized artists, but if i put my music in front of someone, i don’t have to push them to buy it. i personally hate and don’t use spotify, my streamer pays artists more, but im not dedicated to any of these brands lol. i think there needs to be more pressure on all of these companies to pay artists more, bcos this price uptick for spotify isn’t going to musicians at all, it’s to add their audiobooks (and pay those people terribly too lmao). if major musicians went on strike/protests for streaming to pay more i think we’d see real progress

I prefer having the wav files of songs - either by audacity or other programs. KZbin and other streaming platforms normalize their audio to -14 Lufs. I’m an audio engineer so I like to have the original master for references or whatever. Anyways, I have +2000 songs all saved for offline listening or shuffling - never have to use any streaming platforms unless I’m ripping or downloading 😅 Edited to say that media players have sd cards now, it is pretty much like a lil movie/music device now.

Yeah its convinient but I've been listening to the same music most of the time, and most of the new music I've discovered has been through KZbin videos and rarely through Spotify. Since then, I've been on the hunt for an iPod to modify its storage, and cds from artists I mostly listen to. Awesome video, man. You bring up really good points. I didn't even know about how Spotify fucked over its customers with the car thing. That's really bad business practice.

I never thought streaming numbers were impressive for exactly why you said. In the days of people buying physical media it was waaaay more impressive and I STILL hold those numbers as the main ones because you had to take yourself to a store and use your 10-20 dollars to buy the cd. I'm kinda old (Gen X) and somewhere around 2001 I started digitizing my music collection. And I had a LOT of CDs back then. Let's just say that by the time Spotify came around, my digitized collection plus decent portable MP3 players meant I really had no interest in streaming. Plus my tastes are just obscure enough that I wasn't finding artists I was curious about. So I've never actually paid a penny to Spotify in my life. And as it turns out, it's not like many pennies would go to any of the obscure artists on that platform. These days I either get something I really want via Bandcamp (because they offer FLAC files), or if I see a band live, I usually leave with a shirt and/or CD (which yes, I'll digitize). Plus there's still Jolly Roger methods for finding FLAC files of sorely out of print albums that never made it to streaming. This is a long way of saying Spotify seems lackluster and just a corporation leeching money away from the people who actually made the products Spotify sells.

Yah, as an artist with some heroes that have made it on Spotify and streaming in general, I've really tried to play the game and get a semblance of that traction on that platform. Then, one quarter after another, the goal post keep getting moved (e.g. No payment on 1000> streams, paywall for lyrics, higher paywall for ads, feeding our music to AI without our consent, shutting down artist's music for supposedly fake streams even thought they could easily go after the fake accounts themselves, etc.) Years of compounding frustration has made it to where I have bitter taste in my mouth for even using Spotify as a consumer. I'm trying to get in the habit of using Bandcamp as a consumer and pushing that more as an artist. Lots of people say, "Well it's still possible to make bank from Spotify because tons of other artists have." To which I say, "Yes, just like it's possible to still win a soccer game when the other team moves the goal when you kick. Eventually, you can learn to adjust to the unfair tactic the other team uses, but why would you want to do that to begin with?"

I recently bought a second gen iPod Mini. Used to have a second gen Nano, but I wanted something I could upgrade, so I replaced the hard drive with a 512G SSD, replaced the battery with a larger capacity battery, and I've got my sweet Sony XM5 headphones that can still do wired connection. My plan is to explore albums and genres that I haven't really tapped into before, and stuff I've never really taken the time to appreciate. I'm still paying for my family's Spotify accounts, but recently a SECOND one of my top 10 songs of all time was removed from Spotify, so I'm getting charged more for a worse service. With an iPod and ownership of those songs, that won't happen. If I can move anyone else off it and reduce our streaming (since video streaming services are going through some nice enshitification as well), I would be pretty happy.

You also didn't mention how almost every streaming service uses a MP3 format. CDS and often times digital downloads, will us a lossless format such as .WAV. This means that there is more data output for your music using CDs compared to Spotify. I recently started collecting CDs and after hearing the difference, it is hard to listen to the same track again on Spotify because it just doesn't hit the same. Not to mention all the other album art that you get in the sleeve and case when you purchase a physical copy of an album. streaming services do still have their uses as if you use them properly, you can still discover new artists which is why I use it, but I would prefer to not listen to my favorite artists using a streaming platform as it is inferior to CD, Vinyl or digital download.

I don’t regularly listen to the same music and don’t seek out the most popular stuff.
