Six fishermen from Tuvalu were recently welcomed to Picton where they will help to fill a shortage in the NZ seafarer market.
The fishermen will spend six months employed by locally-owned Waikawa Fishing Company working on local boats with experienced NZ crew.
They will also be trained in health and safety, and New Zealand fishing standards - skills which they will be able to apply back in Tuvalu.
The MFAT-funded Fisheries Employment Initiative is in its pilot phase, and is delivered by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment in partnership with Sealord and the Waikawa Fishing Company.
