i’ve rewatched this show so many times and i realized something. everytime rue is tempted by drugs when sober, this song plays. she definitely overdosed but didn’t die. even when the screen goes black at the end, you can hear birds chirping. she said in her backstory episode that she likes to imagine that the hospital monitors beeping are just chirping birds. and when she was going through the house, gia and her mom couldn’t see her, but her dad could. almost like she was close to death and then he pushed her away. also when the choir ppl have rue in the air and they’re like convulsing her, she was probably having a seizure.

Felice yeah. but it’s not a real choir. the choir is just a figment if rues imagination as a product of her overdose. like i said, the way the choir moves mimics what’s happening outside of rue’s delusional mind. that’s why they toss her around so much. she’s not actually being thrown or anything. she’s just going through the process of a drug overdose.

Euphoria is an example of how to show serious problems in an artistic way without romanticizing anything. Everytime it showcases scenes that represent depression I feel a sadness cuz I relate but also glad that it doesn't make mental illness look beautiful and when it shows scenes with drugs i can tell that they're not trying to make drugs "cool" and it shows how there's so much silent suffering that kids my age don't talk about when dealing with drugs and they think it's awesome until they develop problems on top of the problems they already have
@bgos47273 жыл бұрын
What are you talking about? Have you read some comments on euphoria videos. People wanting to try drugs. I feel like it romanticizes it a little definitely, but it has a good valance of reality with it's esthetic.

@@bgos4727 ppl still wanting to try drugs doesn't mean the show is romanticizing it it means that those ppl simply don't care cuz kids ik rlly believe that they won't overdose or become addicted or get sick. They rlly think it's an "agenda" when ppl tell them to not do drugs
@Rose-gq5uv2 жыл бұрын
@@bgos4727 The show doesn't romanticize drugs. You can tell by the scenes with rue either in withdrawal or like going to extremes because of drugs. Like her fight with her mom in season 1 where she threatened her mom with a knife or in the second season when her mom threw out the giant suit of drugs(stupid on her mom's part) and she literally breaks her sister's room door. Or when she tries to steal Fez's grandma's drugs. None of this is beautiful or glamorizing. Literal low points. It's all very real. So, it's only natural that they show the high as well because they showed the ugly shit. I mean what's the reason to get addicted? It's not like addicts are into drugs because it all sucks. It's all meant to show that an addict will lose themselves in the process and do things that they, themselves as a people wouldn't do. As for the kids wanting to do drugs because they thought it looked cool in the show, obviously means that they are immature and looked past all the crap rue pulled under the influence. That's honestly not on the show. It's on those kids. Sounds bad but it really is.
@iRenz02 жыл бұрын
@AliSand what are you talking about? Cassie goes through abortion, Nate gets his ass nearly killed (deservedly) so while kinda being outed by his peers. Maddy is physically and mentally abused, Rue goes through all the stages an addict would have with their friends and family and a kid dies….so again what lack thereof consequences are you talking about it?
@dylangrayson91902 жыл бұрын
So, as a recovering addict, showing only the dark and bad side of drugs is just unrealistic. Drugging is romanticized specifically because it’s fun. People would never do it if it was all bad all the time. In fact, what makes this show better than other shows is that it doesn’t shy away from both sides of it. You can literally see why someone would want to try it and then shortly thereafter, see exactly why you shouldn’t. Specifically for addicts I could see this show as being a trigger, hell, it is for me. Every time she does some, I immediately think about it and how maybe this time I could handle it, but then I see her sick as a dog and I remember why I quit lol. The truth of the show is it’s strength and I hope it keeps that. Love these comments tho! Hope y’all have a great day!

As a former heroin addict and someone who has overdosed, this scene is 100% conveying a relapse triggered by her breakup with jules. Her walking through the house and stumbling, almost fighting the intense high thats building up, was her "falling out" as we call it in the drug world. Meaning she did too much and she's beginning to OD. Eventually I believe she actually does overdose and her heart stops, around the time she sees her family and father. The other dancers are other victims of the Opioid epidemic, others that have lost their life to this terrible and hard-to-break lifestyle. Rue is, I believe, dancing with the spirits. This reminds me of another music video, Acid Rain by Lorn, in which right before the person in the music video dies of trauma from a car crash, she's dancing with the other victims/spirits of the car crash, her last dance with life. Rue is doing so here, dancing with those that are already gone, almost joining them. The dance moves shown in the scenes tell me that she is in fact found by either her mom or sister and the ambulance was called because it looks like they are trying to revive her heart with a defibrillator. The end, when she's climbing the pile of other victims, she's about to "go into the light" or, you know, die. But, she drops... She's revived and brought back to life! She never fully died if that makes sense. That's my interpretation as an addict at least. We don't know if she instantly came back or is in a coma again, every overdose is unique. But this scene just conveys so much emotion and memory, I cry almost every time I watch it.

Guys she’s not dead- she is an 18 year old addict and relapsed. I was an addict that age and went to rehab at 19. You know when I got clean for real and relapsed for the last time? 33. They used a song to DISPLAY her relapse. It was a visual depiction of what brought out her mental illness and made it worse (her dad dying, falling in love, feeling outcast, her family issues, etc). I honestly wonder if the people at the end are supposed to represent drugs how they’re controlling her and tossing her around and pulling her back. How she’s trying to conquer them by getting to the top of the hill.. and then falls. A funny thing about this- I swear on my life I’ve been as high as she is in the beginning when she’s falling over. Xanax really can get you that fucked up if you take it to far.

I think the people demestrate two things, number one doctors and nurses trying to save rue after she overdosed the first time, or potentially trying to save her in current times due to her having another OD. Second, I think the pile of people who represent sort of a hill or mountain are people who died due to substance issues. They watch rue as she climbs up the mountain of people, but when she is very close, she eventually falls, indecating she's back to her drug use.

@Kevin Garza The only mentioned drugs are more pill form like opiates/painkillers and Xanax, but a lot of opiate users become heroin users because they have similar effects. So their users probably look similar too.

Wait isn’t the hoodie supposed to separate past from present, i.e. this scene takes place right after she leaves her father’s room, hence why she’s wearing the hoodie instead of her prom outfit? Ergo, this is a memory from the beginning of her drug use
@paddypower195 жыл бұрын
I think the hoodie is used as a memento to connect the past and the present. The hoodie is the is something she uses to remember her father by, we see here take it immediately after her father's body is wheeled out of his bedroom after his death. The hoodie is almost a safety blanket for Rue as it gives her peace in her darkest moments or when she's having a hard time dealing with her father's death. The other thing Rue has done to comfort herself in her darkest moments is to use drugs to numb her pain and escape everything that goes on in her mind. In the final moments of the episode, Rue has reached another one of her darkest moments after being left behind by Jules. Her pain and sadness force her to to rely on the two things that give her even a moments peace, her father's hoodie and the use of drugs. Therefore the montage of memories that lead up to Rue's relapse show that in the past she used her fathers sweater and the drugs to keep herself at peace and escape her agony and now in the present she relies on them again to do the same. The sweater itself serves as a metaphor for Rue trying to comfort her pain.

People have been speculating as to why her dad is the only one who interacted with her in this scene even tho he’s dead and I have two theories: 1) Maybe she always felt he was the only one who came close to understanding her suffering more than the rest of her family. 2) Drugs may make her feel more alive, but they bring her closer to death and farther from the living, hence why her dad could see her and respond to her touch.

*ALL FOR US LYRICS EXPLAINED:* In general, the song is about Rue's addiction. Rue is the protagonist in this song, and drugs are the enemy of this protagonist. The verses "taking it all for us, doing it all for love" have 2 meanings, depending on whether the choir (which represents drugs) or Rue is singing. When the drugs (the chorus) say "taking it all for us" they are referring to how Rue takes the drug. When they say "doing it all for love" they mean that Rue takes the drug because of the "love" she has for them. Clearly that it´s not love, it´s addiction. It's not good for her, and she knows it, but because of her addiction she can't contain herself and takes the drugs. When only Rue says the verses, it´s when she lets us know that she is " taking it" (or putting up with) her addictions for her loved ones and for herself, and she is doing it because of the love she has for them. Now I will explain my theory of what each verse means (this last scene and this song have a lot of content) *|| Too much in my system (famine, famine)* Here Rue lets us know that she was very eager or very hungry to take drugs, and she probably overdosed. *|| Money MIA (pockets hella empty). Mama making ends meet (making ends meet) working like a slave (Mississippi, ay, ay)* Rue's mother has 2 jobs since Rue's father became sick, so it is clear that the effort she is putting into keeping the family going and continuing to be financially stable is impressive, that' s why Rue says she works like a slave. Now, what does "mississippi" mean in all this? Well, relating Mississippi to slavery in this verse is just a historical reference, because Mississippi is the U.S. state that took the longest to abolish slavery. *|| Daddy ain't at home, no (father, father)* Rue´s father died, that´s why she says he´s not at home. *|| Gotta be a man (Michael Corleone)* When Rue says "gotta be a man" she means that, like all humans, her father was unfortunately going to die one day. This shows that Rue really misses her father. In fact, just when Rue says the phrase "gotta be a man" her father (which Rue is imagining) grabs her. Michael Corleone is a character in the film The Godfather. This character cared a lot about his family and gave everything for them. That connects with the next verse of the song: *|| Do it for my homegrowns (sisters, brothers), do it for the fam.* Rue imagines that she sees her father again. He tells her indirectly that it´s not yet her time to die (because he grabs her first and then releases her), that she must fix her life, and that she must do it for her family. *|| Just for your love, yeah, I'll give you the world. Mona Lisa´s smile.* Rue tries to tell us that she would do the impossible (impossible as the Mona Lisa's smile) for the love of her family. _INCISE: The "OH's" that the choir sings, represent drugs tormenting Rue's life and thoughts._ *|| Hell, I'll do twenty-five to life if it makes me your king. A star in your eyes.* This verse reinforces the previous. No matter what sacrifices she makes, if they make her a better person it will be worth it. *|| Guilty or innocent, my love is infinite. I'm giving it. No need for prisoners. Bitch please hands up, this is a stickup.* This is a metaphor for drugs trying to convince Rue not to let them go, and doesn't matter whether she feels guilty or innocent about it. Of course, in the most ironic way possible (if you notice this line it´s only sung by the chorus, which symbolizes the drugs in the scene, because they carry it around and basically don't let her go). The love of her family is infinite and, also, drugs do make you a prisoner. Drugs really have nothing to defend themselves with, they have no arguments to convince Rue after all she has been through, and that´s why they finally say to Rue "hands up, this is a stickup", referring to the fact that drugs will steal the love she could give to her loved ones. *|| Guess you figured my two times two always equates to one* Rue makes an assumption: Her family believes that she never stopped drugging, even though she told them otherwise, since, as I said at the beginning, she fell into another overdose (that's why 2x2=1, it's like a metaphor for her being drugged because clearly 2x2 is not 1 lol). *|| Dreamers are selfish* Many people relate it to Jules, but I think Rue says it to herself. Her dream is to be clean and finally be happy with her family and herself. But, even so, to have at least one joy for a second she takes drugs, and so she calls herself selfish. This theory takes strength when we see the scene. Just when Rue says "dreamers are selfish" she throws herself into the chorus, which as I have said several times, represents drugs. *|| When it all comes down to it* When she says "When it all comes down to it" she means "when i wake up in the hospital" because it is most probable, as i said before, that she has overdosed, and if so, it´s most logical to think that she will wake up in a hospital. This theory takes strength thanks to what is heard after the song ends in the last chapter of the first season: if you remember, at the beginning of the last chapter, when Rue is in the hospital because of her renal infection, she tells us that at night, when everyone is asleep, she closes her eyes in the hospital room and imagines that the little beeps are sounds of birds and that the warm air coming out of the duct is a warm breeze. Well, this is precisely what you hear after "All For Us" ends; sounds of birds and a breeze. She says it in this unclear way because she doesn't feel proud of what is happening, so in order not to feel so bad with herself she expresses it that way. *|| I hope one of you come back to remind me of who I was when I go disappear into that good night* Rue is requesting this of her loved ones. She says she "disappears" because, as I said before, she overdosed. She says that is a "good night" because the drugs make her feel """good""". That´s my theory. I hope you like it :)

i rewatch this scene everyday, this is the most artistically and amazingly beautiful scene in all of film history. the colours, the singing, the dancing, the makeup, the history behind the song and how it relates to rue and her drug abuse and what she’ll do for the people she loves, and zendayas acting makes it all extraordinary, GOD I FUCKING LOVE THIS SHOW AND ZENDAYA. at the beginning of this scene i was pissed that rue relapsed but when you understand it more it’s not really her fault, she’s not doing to drugs for fun, they genuinely make her feel better because she doesn’t feel normal and she’s depressed and they bring her a feeling that makes her calm, i don’t blame her for taking them especially when something happens between her and the girl she loves

god this is so beautiful. the way the gospel singers are wearing robes the same color as her fathers sweater and her glitter tear stains like a uniform, making it holy. the image of her being cradled in the middle of them all, like they’re praying for her or trying to exorcise something. gives me chills every time

The feeling of Euphoria has always been the route of escapism for Rue. And there are only two things in her world that give her this feeling: drugs and Jules. When she's without drugs, she needs Jules. And as we see in this scene, when she's without Jules, she needs drugs. Our solution for addiction can't be something external. It has to come from change within ourselves. That's why it's so damn hard.

So I don't think she's dead. (It'd be stupid to kill her off after getting the green light for the next season) But I do think she relapsed. Like the choir tossing her around made it look like she was having a seizure especially with how she was holding her self. The pile of people grabbing her could be her mom and sister finding her, or the paramedics taking her again. Her falling could just be her passing out completely after, or as someone else stated could signify her coming down from her high.
@user-he3ss2ut1x5 жыл бұрын
thats exactly what i thought. and also people keep saying that this is a flashback to her overdose but she’s wearing the same makeup as from when she was walking home while crying so its from after that.

I have a Theory. At the end after Rue falls back into drug addiction, when the screen goes black you can hear birds chirping quietly and I remember hearing that when Rue was in the hospital she always listen to the heart monitor and would imagine the beeping sound to be birds chirping. Indicating that she is in a coma at the hospital.

This show hit me so hard. As someone who was in a toxic relationship, both of us being girls, and having substance issues but on different timelines, her not knowing what she wanted and me not knowing exactly as well, poor communication, both rocky home lives, me being homeless at the time, after I had gone to treatment I’ve been sober and in college for over 2 years now, I had to force myself away from her. I loved her so much but we were like, codependent in the worst way. This show really hurt to watch, it reminded me of the weakness I felt, being pushed around by my emotions and feeling like I lacked the strength to ever get better. Especially in the lgbt+ community it so hard to find a space that is both accepting of you, yet gives you space to heal. Gay clubs just arent enough. I wish I had an accepting mom like rues mom or dad like Jules dad 😞I really hope to see this show to continue and for Rue to finally get better, like I did.

@@denjism except the entire climax of the second season was about closure and emotional growth, it didn’t really need a grandiose massive final scene. That’s just a tonal difference, not it being inherently half assed. A lot of people *do* watch this show for the dramatic moments and it shows how they react to the positive ones tbh

I love this show, it shows the raw side of the teenage life the media has tried to hide for so long.I just wish more parents would see. A child acts out or lashes out simply because parents don't listen to them, they hear but they don't listen. Instead of blaming the fucked up system of society, let's try and help those that are already suffering next to us then proceed to look into what we can do next to help our neighbours To all those who suffered addiction at one point, remember you are loved and you're are a DAMN HERO TO YOURSELF ok? Don't let the world tell you otherwise

I really believe that this was her “welcoming back party” she’s aware that she’s saying goodbye and sorry to Gia, her mom, dad and the rue they wanted her to be as she leaves the house. -The crowd pulsating and then stopping and dropping her was the progression of her heartbeat. Slowing down and stopping. The initial rush of the hit -Her falling off the pile is the drop into falling in herself as she experiences the high

I know this is a very late response but I just finished the show and I'm in awe! I needed to post my two theories: 1. Rue did in fact relapse. she was heartbroken at the fact that jules left her to go to the city and she felt a similar grief to when her dad has died (hence the reason the showed his death at the same time). I also think that her red hoodie (the one we now only found out was her dads) was a form of comfort for her, and when jules was in her life, she became that new comfort so she didnt need the hoodie. but when she left, rue needed that comfort again, as well as the comfort of drugs. so she got home and relapsed. the bit where she kind of floats up really unnaturally kinda looks like what it would look like if her soul left her body - signifying she overdosed. she then hugs her family, as if to say goodbye, and they dont seem to notice/respond to her - maybe shes a ghost? then, her dad is there, who is DEAD, so maybe shes meeting him? then, i think the parts where the choir were throwing her up from her chest were to show wither CPR or a defibrillator being used on her, and when she climbed the tower of people, and looked up to the light, it was to signify heaven. and the fact that she fell off the tower and not into the light shows that she survived. 2. the way this scene starts is kind of unusual because when you see the flashback of her dad being taken away in the stretcher, she goes into the room and takes his hoodie. she then walks back into her own room after putting the hoodie on, and the way it's been shot is clever because it COULD be a flashback from when her dad died. it's possible that shes just remembering what it felt like to feel so much grief from her dads death that she went into her room and got high. personally, I like my first theory most hahaha!

This Is an absolute relapse alright, this song didn't actually happen but only in her mind that is, she couldn't take the pressure of jules leaving and hence she comes back crying, REMEMBER THE LAST TIME SHE HAD A FUCKED UP DAY? SHE WENT CRYING TO FEZ AND ASKED FOR DRUGS TO WHICH FEZ DENIED and Zendaya delivered a masterful Emmy performance of a drug addict being held from doing drugs and rukus the addict creates!

You know, hate it all you want. But this artsy analysis of how destructive addiction can be is a necessary outlet for those with unresolved feelings about it. Not everyone cares or understands, but there's mi h needed representation of all sides, empathy and forgiveness and that's something rare in mainstream media.
